I hope they've kept that old iron running. That's pretty cool seeing that stuff still working. Slow and burns a lot of fuel but it ALWAYS got the logs to the mill.

In the 50's in Oregon, many of the trees were so large that only 3 or sometimes 5 would fit on a truck. I saw a few 1 log loads. The trucks were gas then and I think had vacuum brakes. There were no freeways, and more than one driver died trying to cross the Willamette River at Oregon City. They had huge wigwam burners at every mill.

this is a friction rig which indeed uses and "on demand" throttle to run the hoist spools and swing motor, just like your car. you are thinking of a modern hydraulic rig where the diesel engine keeps the hydraulic pump running full time and your controls regulate the force/direction desired.

The loader looks like an old Model-6 Northwest with a Murphy 0r Cat 318 and the skidder was an old D-4 Cat with an arch. Stuff is still around if you know where to look.

@jeffrey6750 That's exactly where this is at. Pomeroy Farm is a "living" museum. When I was there 8-9 years ago they were yarding with a triple drum yarder on a Cat 60 and a spar tree and loading with a steam donkey and hayrack.

Most likely a mechanical knee throttle the operator runs with the same leg that is used to hold and apply a manual band brake on a cable drum, probably the holding line. Operating a line loader like that is true multi-tasking, not like kids these days call watching a movie while texting friends..The old loader is most likely so gutless that the operator just crams on full throttle when he wants to do some action, and works with what he's got.

If you dont cut down some trees every now an then, theyll just die an rot into the ground. Complete waste. Plus the deer like open spaces like a cutblock. An when new trees are planted, theyre planted much thicker than the old forest. So theres more trees being planted than what came down. Like 10 trees per 1 old tree

what's the power in the "loader?" ... the throttle action is odd. .. is it a malfunctioning governor? or does it have some sort of demand-actuated mechanism I've never seen before... we always just set the throttles and they would drone on and on all day long at whatever rpm range we set it.. quite odd...
