I have a 30 gallon Walstead tank I set up three years ago and have never cleaned, other than a HOB filter I occasionally clean. It's heavily planted, has three Gourami, six Black Skirt Tetras, a Bet, Five Oto cats, Cory cats and shrimp. It's doing fine, no fish loss ever. I regularly throw in some leaves, limbs, etc.

@@dadigitechman What a great idea! Inspired. I am going to try this. Thanks for sharing. I have found that natural light can eliminate surface scum completely. It is one of the reasons I do not use artificial lights. Bacteria love artificial light. I think the UV in natural light sorts them out but I am not sure. I only have experience and trial and error as my guide.

@@dadigitechman Thanks i will check it out. Just went out into the shed and managed to redirect some morning sun from the floor to the top corner of the shed near the roof where I will be able to redirect it down onto a table. It works. Fantastic. My plan is to try to catch 30 minutes of sun, maybe longer? If I send that to a part of the table that gets sun later in the morning I can increase the lighting period. Yes I find that tanks with greater than 2 hours sun (not easily achievable unless you go outside) have some amazing creatures in them that I do not get inside the shed. 2 hours exposure is what you get indoors generally, but even that is hard. This is going to be fun, thankyou. By the way I love artificial light. I have stacks of spotlights, I love spotlights and aquariums. But because I do not use pumps I have found surface scum to be a killer for me. So all my tanks are sunlit to save electricity as well.

Hi! New sub from Hong Kong here! These balanced aquarium is what I have been striving for! I had 2 tanks(with a another one in storage), one livebearer themed and one Chinese native fish themed , both with a lot of plants and little to no water changes. The fishes thrived in both of the tanks and they’re happy and healthy. Balancing aquariums does take time!

I also have 2 small planted tanks at the window and above radiator(20 and 30 Litre/5.5 and 8 gal) but with heaters which turn on mostly at autumn and winter. Have been 6 years into this hobby and never bought an aquarium light.😀

Found your channel a few weeks ago and have been enjoying since. Especially love this one. Your grandmother sounds like an incredible lady! I had my first tank when I was about 12 and it was a 10 gallon with the metal bracing and slate bottom. Wish I had known then the things you are teaching. Bigger tanks later on and then got out of the hobby due to all the water changes I thought I needed to keep the tanks clean. But now thanks to you I will be setting up a 40 breeder and a 50 gallon soon with your method! Love your videos!

I have a 1966 19th edition of The Innes Book that belonged to my father. This whole time I've been pronouncing "Innes" wrong. I haven't looked at it in a long time, but when I was a kid, I'd spend hours looking at the color plate pictures. 🙂

I set up my tank a few months ago, not natural at all. Very few plants, seachem flourite substrate, it’s a 36 gal with black tetras, cory cats, an angel, and a few mystery snails. I’ve started adding as many plants as I can find, and I wanna make this a truly balanced ecosystem. How would you go about adjusting this tank to be more hardy and natural? Would you add any microfauna, like small crustaceans or worms?
@FatherFish Жыл бұрын
Add 2" of sand, any color, any type. Yes, micro culture is a necessity. Follow our suggestions for wet leaves from a creek..

I’m really looking forward to trying my first Walstad/Father Fish inspired tank. Would this work for a standard goldfish? I’m new to fish keeping so I put plants in the goldfish’s tank before I read the standard advice that goldfish will tear up all your plants. It’s been fine so far. He actually seems to like hiding under the sword plant.
@FatherFish Жыл бұрын
The more plants and nature in your aquarium, the less you have to worry about the fish tearing up things. They love nature more than you do! Looking forward to seeing your setup in discord! :)

Electric baseboard, hot air from a blower, and some baseboard hot water.

Hi Father Fish. I have a 46 gallon bow front. That has a deep gravel substrate. I rely mostly on plants with rhyzomes. But i have a mass of suswassertang that takes up a quarter of my tank. I of course just reset my tank. Then found you on KZbin. Just my luck. I am moving soon, so I will have to fix my setup then. To make up for my lack of sand and mud, I added a bunch of leaves. May I have an invitation to your discord? Thank you Sir.
