As with everyone else I clicked on hoping for a 405 review but wasn't too disappointed when the 605 popped up. They really were some piece of kit, can't believe it had a 'sport' suspension button back in 89' My dads 407 coupe has a 'sport' suspension button and we thought it was some job for modern day lol. Not that its ever used like, you buy big peugeots for their ride and comfort. You want rock hard suspension and cornering go German lol

I always liked the 605 as a kid. If I'd been older, I'd have loved to have driven one - as a company car, though, since they depreciated like falling girders, as with most big French cars.

Private buyers of the 605 (I think there were at least 2) lost thousands in instant depreciation as they drove their new car off the forecourt. I think that's why mainstream manufacturers don't bother with big barges any more.
@Samspianopage5 жыл бұрын
Probably more because of the snob appeal and supposed prestige factor of the likes of say BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Jaguar. Not saying they were bad, had BMW's and Merc's in the family and they were all excellent. However if you judged a car on what it was like on it's own and weren't bothered by the badge on the front, then the 605, the XM ,the Lancia Thema , Saab 9000 ,the Alfa 164 and the Renault 25 were all very competent big barges in their own right. Couple of minor electrical and nit picky things maybe with each but as I say they were all very unique machines. Each had it's own distinct character (especially the Citroen and Alfa), hell everybody had Beemers and Audi's, there were very few adventurous buggers out there who took a gamble and hence why the depreciation was soo high, oh aye play it safe and go with a German big car. In Continental Europe they might've been more popular I dunno. As for the US, I think it was just Peugeot couldn't stand up well being a smaller manufacturer than say GM or Chrysler, but I've seen good reviews from Motorweek of the 505 and stuff. Plus they never launched the 205 or any Citroen other than the Ancient but still quirky and fun to drive 2CV, the 205 was probably way too small for American driver's tastes Peugeot figured, and Citroen didn't have a great dealer network either, so even though I think they sold the revolutionary DS in the US people just didn't quite get the French over there. Even Renault didn't succeed much with the Le Car (their version of the 5) or the AMC Aliance or the Feugo. Winnebago even tried to use Renault's J8S 2.1 Diesel engine and running gear for the LeSharro motorhome, dunno if they sold many because of the availability of parts and the reliability might've been an issue with some things (certainly not the engine LOL) I dunno.

Do you know why? First of all, pretty much all brand new cars lose value once they leave the showroom. About the 605 and the Citroen XM which belongs to the same group, the first years production cars had a ton of reliability issues, PSA wanted to launch those cars way too quick, without doing a ton of testing, to counter the competitors. I know some customers who had those cars, and they replaced them by their German competitors. The models produced from 1995 till 1999 I believe, were sorted out, all the previous reliabilty issues were solved, but it was too late, to change the reputation.
