Hey guys! We made this cool video to compare OLD vs NEW television sets/types. We compare CRT, antique CRT, PLASMA, PROJECTION, and LED. We also cut them open and see what's inside. ---AAAND one of them explodes. haha

NEVER break those tube TVs. (CRTs.) They have mercury AND phosphorous. The insides of those tubes are VERY poisonous.

Finally, somebody knew. Also, they have extremely high voltage that the flyback transformer generates. They were lucky the automatic discharge function had worked, they could've died.(You can never trust the auto-discharge function on CRTs, a l w a y s discharge them yourself before touching the tube and/or repairing/servicing it). Those high voltage warnings are no joke. It's literally about 25 000V - 36 000V in there.

Very true crts have a high vacuum from experience. when I was in grade school through out the 80s in the summer I learned to work on many. Sets. And the 90s.

O_O... thank goodness i got out when i did then! back in 2012 i was home alone when a sharp boxed tv exploded in the living room.. smoke came out and i was so scared! i thought it was just fire but after reading this comment i couldn't believe there was also mercury and phosporous! thank goodness i got out super earlier then.. i actually could've died!

Good god, you destroyed a nice vintage TV set. Damn thing was clean. You’re lucky as hell he didn’t get bit by the anode. 20,000 volts is super fun. Also lucky it didn’t explode flopping the tube around after taking the band off. Cool explosion though.

3:00 jesus please don't stick your hand around randomly in old CRTs. They can hold a huge charge in the flyback transformer and in the display itself. It's thousands of volts at a current high enough to kill you. You need to discharge them. And don't even try the "just shut it off for a day" that works with nearly all modern electronics. The CRTs can store a lethal charge for months to years. Also you should be careful in general. Most modern electronics will have a circuit to auto discharge any caps once turned off, but it's not uncommon not to have one. You don't have to be as safe with modern electronics as long as you know what capacitors are and don't touch any that might still be charged. But those old CRTs are super dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. Also as someone else mentioned, the band around the old CRT was a tensioning band. The old large black and white TVs didn't have very thick glass (and used different types), and it was often prestressed, so the band applies tension around it to absorb shocks and keep the TV stable. Once they come off a nasty tap can cause them to implode. They can still implode with the band obviously, but it absorbs a lot of the tension and the implosion isn't as extreme. The colour CRTs aren't as dangerous in terms of imploding though (but are still/even more dangerous in terms of being charged). They tend to use thick lead glass to prevent x-rays from escaping in large quantities, and then you have the mesh and all sorts of other equipment at the screen and a much thicker screen as well. You can cause them to implode but they're much much less violent just due to how much energy the thick glass and other materials asorb.

As a restorer of vintage TV's who is experienced at handling their internal components in a safe manner, you guys are lucky to not have seriously hurt yourselves, the tube is under a hard vacuum and there are many tonnes of pressure pressing on the front face and rear cone of the tube that is trying to collapse it, I was wincing when you removed the steel rim band from the edge of it as it's purpose is to reinforce the weak glass on the sides to stop the vacuum collapsing the tube in on itself, they are very dangerous and seriously unstable with this band removed and can go off like bombs at any time on their own lacerating anyone within the vicinity. The other TV's in the video from the 90's and 2000's are pretty worthless but that was a collectable mid 1960's TV in good clean condition and very repairable, a real shame what happened to it.

Breaking CRT tubes and breathing in the radioactive phosphorus dust ?! You really should do this outside ( downwind of yourselves) and NOT touch the broken glass. Not because it's sharp but because of the phosphorus coating on the glass.

They are not radio active, it is fluorescent material. Not that you should inhale it, but it is not radio active like early watch arm markers.

Back in the mid 70's, I would recover discarded TV's from the neighborhood in Chicago. Some were repairable but ones that were not got the same treatment that you gave that one. I had one CRT that had a explosion/implosion about as spectacular as the one you had, and it's a constant reminder for safety when dealing with repairing equipment ( such as a older CRT oscilloscope) to wear proper eye protection, as one minor handling accident while your face is in close proximity to it can have tragic consequences.

It's so interesting to see how the tvs work. Thank you. Also are those tubes in the old CRT tv vacuum tubes? Vacuum tubes were used in early computers as electronic switches. The vacuum tubes turn "on/off" like a light switch. They where used before compact transistors were invented that also worked like a light switch but were much smaller and I believe cheaper
