because numa, the dual 2670 is actually worse for gaming! :D you can use process lasso to pin games to one cpu and see a pretty significant jump in performance though. Plus this was ~ 3.3ghz turbo all cores the whole time on the 2680

That is a remarkable and well grounded piece of tech journalism. The fact that even after all these year's a Sandybridge and decent GPU is still all you need... I used to upgrade my whole systems every 2 years or so from the 90's through to 2011 where I bought a 2500k... unfortunately a financial drought has left me still running my sandy bridge from 2011 but with a 980ti it still smashes 1080p.

I recently built a PC from my "old parts bin", to gift to a kid in the neighborhood who's getting interested in computers and games. Gave him a Core2Quad Q9650, 2GB of RAM (we're gonna upgrade him to 4 or 8 if we can find a cheap kit), and one of my old 780Ti's. A bit of a mis-match of generations, but honestly, it works great. The Q9650 has no problems what so ever with many modern games. He runs Overwatch at close to max settings, well over 60 FPS. He runs Rocket League, maxed out, at like 150 fps. No problems at all with totally relevant, modern titles, using a CPU from 2005, and 2GB of (very fast!) RAM. And that's why I laugh my ass off at people who worry about CPU bottlenecking. My own PC has a 4770k and I see no reason what so ever to upgrade. I hit the FPS-cap in Doom with completely maxed settings, at 1440p just fine. So clearly, getting the data to the GPU fast enough is not a problem, and won't be for many years.

The last 2 systems I built (920 and 3820) have lasted ages. I'm still kicking it with the 3820 (runs at 4.5 on air with an extra .01v) and a 970 without issue... I do still have the itch to upgrade, but it looks like the only one that would make sense for the next year or so is just snagging a 2680. Thanks for the vid!

749 cb multithread isn't that bad (4.8 Ghz on a cheap $40 mATX board, the board was the limiting factor). Thread for thread, that's about an i7 6700 (non-K), and those cost a lot more. Its still good enough for 4k gaming. I should re-test this, I finally have duel Furys and my 8350 is on my custom test bench, but it was a difficult task getting these 2 massive cards to flex into position in my mid ATX case (had to pry on my case as hard as I could to flex it out of the way, as well as the fan shroud on the bottom card...).

@jakegarrett81097 жыл бұрын
The 1800X and 1700X have a higher chance of getting to 4.0 Ghz. Mine according to my graph, it would need 1.70v to hit 4.0 Ghz, and that is WAY too much for normal water cooling. I can pull out my sub zero phase cooler and ice the thing into submission, or I could buy another one (actually Threadripper 1950X is about 1/2 price of a new phase change cooler). So I'm stuck at 3.8 reasonably or only 3.9 for benchmarking before it gets too hot and goes nuclear temps compared to my old FX pulling 300+w.

Same way you overclocked an i7 back on the x58 chipset. With the base clock. Both i7's and Xeons have a lot of OC headroom on that platform. The generation after (Sandy Bridge) is when Intel locked down the base clock, and started charging people extra for 'K' CPU's with the unlocked multiplier.

Got an X5670 from aliexpress myself, they're overclockable and supported by non-server motherboards even if not officially. A must buy for any LGA1366 owner because they don't have the issue of Bloomfield which is the heat scaling more with the frequency than the voltage. So an i7 920 at 4Ghz 1.25V runs hotter than one at 3.8Ghz 1.35V. Such a dumb thing they had. Anyway, going from a 4Ghz OC on my 950 to 4.4Ghz on something that has 50% more cores/threads, ran 15 to 20C cooler. Again, Westmere Xeons are a must buy for LGA1366 owners, it's just win/win for so cheap.

as someone who has a E5-2690 and a E5-2670 (both first versions) workstation i picked up for free (dell precision T3600 systems with T7600 power supplies) i 100% agree here. where this falls short however will be things like premier pro because premier pro favors clock and IPC + cores.. but for gaming even 1333Mhz ECC ram in quad channel it is fine however i strongly suggest getting 1600Mhz ddr3 at least.. i since upgraded my E5-2670 rig from 1333Mhz to 1600Mhz ddr3 and it just makes gaming little more smoother, i dont think you will see any better fps just little smoother though like fewer missed frame times and less waiting on hardware I/O and stuff like that... my E5-2690 rig makes up for its lower speed ram with higher speed clock, but i imagine it be same result, extra smoothness with 1600Mhz ram vs 1333mhz in it now.. ill also add to this, if all you want is a system to target 60fps gaming, dont need ultra eye bleeding fps.. these xeons are totally acceptable.. just make sure you get 1600Mhz ram and put it in quad channel for extra bandwidth, get nice cooler like noctua U4 server cooler or a AIO liquid cooler, pair it with a modern GPU and you wont be dissapointed at all..only down side is the heat it will put off and power it will draw..i found my E5-2690 in most gaming loads like gta 5 when paired with a mid ranged card like 1060 or 480 pulls around 300-400 watts give or take floats around a bit...

That's quite a surprising result. Even though the DDR3 in the Xeon probably has lower latency, the 7900X's DDR4 has 50% more memory bandwidth. However, the Xeon should have three DIMMs per channel while the 7900X has only one (I think), which might significantly improve random memory accesses on the Xeon (both have 4 channels). The Xeon has a pidling 2MB of L2 and 20MB of L3, while the 7900X supposedly has 10MB of L2 and 14MB of L3. The L1 is basically the same on both. It's possible that what we are seeing here might be windows-related or specific cpu optimizations made by the games, and not so much the raw cpu parameters. The Xeon must have some sort of latency advantage somewhere, but I don't know where. -Matt

I'm still rocking an ASUS P9X79-E WS. Had the E5-1660-0 out the box w/ G.Skill Trident X Quad-Chan 2400 Cl10 T1 it was brilliant to ASUS Ai Tune to 4.2GHz. (4.6 w/ tweak) & added the Strix 1080-Ti & later the E5-1680-V2 was a nice upgrade. Very overclockable beyond 4.2 & able to use SpeedStep . I was impressed the S3 sleep still works. This felt modern side by side to my X99-E WS w/ then i7-5960X

Still happy with my 3930k. Got the same sabertooth mobo and corsair cooler too! The corsair is a bit loud and it's so old I'm afraid it's going to fail soon.

what are the chances my dell t3600 was tweaked to run at turbo all the time? because it seems to when referencing the windows task manager and i'm not aware of how to change it and im going from a e5-1603 4-core 4-thread to a e5-2665 8-core 16-thread and wouldn't mind turning it off to see if it draws less power... help would be greatly appreciated

I've never accepted the premise of Intel's pricing or purported performance since Sandy Bridge. In fact Sandy Bridge left a lot on the table able Nehalem. Personally I enjoy an X5660 on an Asus board with a GTX 970 4GB and long for nothing. Getting tired of the hype over 4K gaming. If you have to spend a grand on a CPU and almost as much on a GPU to achieve it then how many people are really doing that. And how does a $500 console do it unless it's just an up scaling 1080p gimmick. Don't buy into hype, Intel has enough money.
@FFFan34456 жыл бұрын
A lot of the Xbox One X games run at sub-native resolutions, not true 4K, and if your CPU can play a game well at 1080p, it can do so at 4K. It's completely bottlenecked by GPU, unlike framerate, which is reliant on GPU AND CPU. I agree that 4K isn't worthwhile, but it is something worth looking into out of curiosity. I'm rocking a 34" 3440x1440 IPS monitor and a 24" 1080p 144Hz VA monitor, they pair really well with my Ryzen 7 1700 and 1080 Ti. No real interest in 4K, I had a 4K monitor back in 2014 and it was just not worth it. Had to up the Windows scaling for my eyes to not strain, and I had 22 year old young-man eyes. It looked cool in games, sure, but it was just too much.

Clocks? Memory? This should be on description. I hardly belive that 2680 and it's poorly low clock can be faster than any 4/8 from 2016 until now.

Holy Crap! I have a 3930k (originally with a 560 ti) x79 deluxe. Could I throw a 10 core Xeon in there? I'm gonna do some lookin'.

Probably too late but any 10 core suffers in single threaded performance. Go for an 8 core.

I upgraded from an i5 3570k to a xeon 2670 about a year and a half ago because although gaming was ok with the i5 it really wasn't up to some of the music production I do and I needed the extra cores. I got the 2670 running at about 3.3Ghz boost which was perfectly fine, but about 6 months later when I saw they had more than doubled in price since I bought it and on ebay were roughtly the same price as a 3960x at that time I counldn't resist... So I sold the xeon and bought the i7. Although it has less threads, the extra 1Ghz or so makes up for it. In terms of the x79 platform the main barrier to entry used to be the price of the boards (I paid £200 for mine a couple of years ago) but you can get good ones for about £90 now. It's not even like they lack any features over the current intel offerings other than M.2. Unbelievable value

So bored, I reply to 3 month old comments... I've been on fence about 3960x or e5-2680. What you think? Looks like you would go for the X? I'm thinking the X will give me a better mix of gaming and video editing.

I knew I should have kept my Sabertooth X79. Haswell-E is nice and all but I could have saved a lot of money by upgrading to that Xeon.

Mnemonicman Just wait a year or two when the 2011v3 Xeons start getting decommissioned. Most of the E5-2670s/80s that flooded eBay were because Facebook was upgrading its servers.

Might do that but already snagged a dual socket 2011 board for $200 so I'm gonna put more ram on that for now.

I have a couple of e5 2690 in my hp dl380 g8. For the server environment the L2 cache gives snappier response than the L3 cache. Whether or not that affects the video handling I am not sure. That is the premise that AMD opteron CPU works on in a server environment.

Do you have a link to a resource for all core turbo on the e5?

I build systems all the time using older 6-core Xeons. Mostly X5670s and e5-1650s. They overclock really well, generally in the 4.2 to 4.6GHz range, which makes performance per dollar very good. With a GTX 970, Passmark scores range from around 4000 to 6000 depending on specs. The 5670s will bottleneck a 1080 but the e5's really don't in most cases. The 5670s are pretty well balanced with a 970 or 980. It is very hard to argue with the performance from a chip that runs ~$30 (X5670) to ~$80 (1650)
