I think it just shows how good the writing is, that sailor moon, both versions, can appeal just as much to boys as it does to girls. Dispite the manga/crystal being written for girls, I a male, had a blast with it, and got just as much, if not more enjoyment out of it, then a series that’s “for boys”. Because it doesn’t matter what gender you are, or what the original audience is sappost to be. There is no limit, when it comes to good storytelling.

The stuff came from the 80s and 90s, both inclusive and progressive. Also doesn't be you on the head with their fake inclusiveness like U.S. made TV, movies and games. Hell, I remember I use to reenact the Moon Tiara throw or say the Moon Sceptor attack was being used. As a little boy, I didn't give a fuck about it, just love it. But you gotta love 90s censorship. While I still prefer the 90's 'Sailor Stars,', 'Cosmos' *did* fix one very big problem I've always had with the manga, in that we actually get to see Usagi's family at the end. In the manga, we see Usagi saying goodbye to her mother who, with tears in her eyes as she holds Luna, Artemis, and Diana, says, "It feels like she's not coming home again." So she's obviously going to reunite with her family and the cats at the end of the manga, right? Nope, it goes right from Usagi saving the entire galaxy directly to her and Mamoru living in Crystal Tokyo and getting married. The. End. It always drove me crazy that we never see her family or the cats again, not even a mention of them, or got to see Usagi returning to her normal teenage life (sure it's somewhat implied, but implying and showing are two very different things). So when at the end of 'Cosmos' Usagi returns to modern-day Earth and her family and the cats are there to greet her warmly, welcoming her home, I cried buckets. It was so wonderful to have closure after all this time, especially since I didn't think they were going to address it at all considering I watched a clip of Mamo and Usa's wedding where, like in the manga, her family never shows up. It was a very nice surprise, and I give 'Cosmos' huge props for tying up that decades-old plot thread and giving those of us who wanted it some peace of mind.

It's maybe because I love long stories over short ones. Only time when I prefer shorter one is eternal. SuperS was really hard to finish. I hate you horse boy. I HATE YOU! @@Mebro-m6d I disagree. The 90s anime is very good. Every character got development, including the villains. The Monster of the Week format allowed it to be like a Super Sentai show, so we actually got to see each Guardian have moments to shine. It wasn't all about Usagi. Plus, we got scenes like Usagi transforming in her kitchen as we hear flass shatter everywhere. It wasn't dour and boring. SuperS is the weakest season, but it has the strongest finale of any season. Nehelenia is the most threatening villain of Usagi's and those last 7 episodes are animated so damn well. The best animation in the entire 90s run.

I just hate how weak the 90s anime made Usagi. Like she’s supposed to be on par with Galaxia. STRONGER, in fact. But the 90’s anime had her get beaten to a pulp, torn to shreds, and had Usagi cry her way to saving the day. Cosmos (being faithful to the manga) hand Usagi hunt down and seek out Galaxia, knowing this time, without the support of her friends, she had to do it on her own. And she doesn’t back down for a second. She’s trading blows with her enemies and has Galaxia on the run. THIS is the Usagi I want to see, not Crysagi the anime gave us. And I get it, Usagi is a sensitive person and at that point she lost A LOT, but I liked seeing Manga Usagi rise above her pain to defeat her greatest enemy, willing to fight even though she hates to do so. I get the whole ‘we don’t have to fight’ trope, but sometimes, we DO have to fight, and Cosmos/Manga Usagi proved that. TL:DR Cosmos/Manga Usagi reigns supreme.

For me, it's because the pacing is atrocious. There is no down time to digest anything happening on screen. Every Sailor Moon series has had incredible soundtracks.

@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Aside from being a movie and having limited time, I do think the sense of "everything is happening so fast" is a great way to induce panic into the audience as we feel what Usagi is feeling. Starlights definitely get their moments and princess Kakyuu gets a lot more shine too, even her own transformation. I think fundamentally, SM means different things to different people. For me, I always wanted a great story and the manga/crystal/eternal/cosmos gives me that complete story. A story that has chapter 1 connect with the final chapter, a story where all the evil villains came from the same place for the same reason, a story where every arc connects and doesn't insult your intelligence.

@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork thats because in dream arc/cosmos arc in manga they are the SHORTEST chapters that focus on lore and actual story telling unlike the 90s. However the first 3 seasons and Arcs (If u read manga) theres much MUCH more and remember Japan, especially in animation, works the CRAP out of they employees Also in the first arc of manga u get actual character arc moments and dee story so the inner and outers arent much in the cosmos because after following the manga wise, we know the characters built up this moment in story and impact.
@kjarakravik48372 ай бұрын
@@nworder4life Creating the panic inducing feeling of "everything is happening so fast" only works if this is a ramp up and the previous parts of your story had a slower pace, which isn't the case here because it has the same pacing as the rest of the series, which in my opinion just feels rushed. I agree that different people enjoy different types of stories. In my case I care a lot less about the plot then the characters and the way that plot is executed, and most of the characters and their relationships in the reboot to me feel less lie people and more like props to be used by the plot whenever it's convenient, which I have a hard time getting past.

I think the problem with sailor Moon cosmos is the pacing it's literally the pacing like okay we know how fast paced the manga is and honestly that is a failure of the sailor Moon manga in general is that everything is so rushed that's the problem with Salem and Crystal everything is so rushed nothing is paced out everything is just happening happening happening without a reason without a just cause like you have to build up to that momentum you can't just start off stuff and then on top of that another thing would say the moon cosmos is once again you give all the sailor scouts their brand new powers and within the first couple of minutes of the movie everybody dying Well what was the whole point of giving them these brand new powers that's supposed to be their ultimate forms you get what I'm saying so it's kind of crazy how that works Yes the animation might be beautiful yes it still closer to the story but the pacing was terrible and it was awful and I rather the show bring the pacing and the character development that the 90s did then rushing through everything

One thing that I hated about the original Sailor Stars anime is the decision making that Usagi makes. She is making choices that do not seem different to how she behaved in the beginning of season 1. At the end of Season 1, Usagi was willing to face and kill Beryl for her involvement in destruction of the Moon Kingdom and murdering her friends, so why does Galaxia get grace instead? Galaxia massacred millions all over the galaxy, and could have easily defeated Usagi if it weren’t for the plot. Usagi’s compassion is something that is amazing about the character, but the fact that she faces off Galaxia without a plan and risks the lives of the entire galaxy is absurd to me… and I feel as though the ending isn’t rewarded. While Usagi’s compassion saved the day in the manga / Cosmos, she was willing to FIGHT to save her friends because she knew that if she didn’t, she would be killed.
@alexisdowers20302 ай бұрын
I believe it is because in the original anime Beryl willingly gave herself two to Matalia (sp?), while galaxia sealed chaos into herself and she was eventually taken over by chaos. So the real Galaxia, was not the one that murdered millions of people, it was chaos controlling her body
@namanh84392 ай бұрын
Because both seasons touches on different themes. SS1 is about love fighting evil, SS5 was no longer about it, but about hope and a soldier's pride. The latter was constantly reminded to Galaxia by Usagi. In the OG, Beryl is evil, and she was always like that. So she was meant to be destroyed. But Galaxia was once a good soldier, and heroically sacraficed herself to seal Chaos within her body, and Usagi knew that. She saved Galaxia out of her compassion as not only soldier-mates, but also bc Galaxia was someone who once saved the galaxy, a true hero. Killing off Galaxia would negate Galaxia's heroic actions in the past. Thatz why story did provide a way to finish her off, with the Sword given to Usagi, but Usagi chose not to use it
@kou7191Ай бұрын
@@alexisdowers2030 Yeah, the older anime made it seem like Galaxia was just a victim, not much different than the black moon family, Prof Tomoe, or even Nehelenia - they were all originally good people that got possessed by evil so it makes sense Usagi would rather try to purify them than just desintegrate them on sight.

Crystal fixed all the nasty changes that the 90's version made, but there were moments in the og anime where the characters were expanded more and you could get more attached to them. The way the Inners die in the 90's anime still hits you stronger than in the manga/movie because by that time you are more connected to them. The villains were also there to get defeated instantly, so the main issue with the overall reboot series is the pacing. Although pacing is also the problem of the og anime too..all the fillers didn't take the story anywhere and some villains suffered from it (Tellu, Viluy for example) others got fleshed out and became more interesting. So the perfect Sailor Moon experience would be to mash these two versions together. I'd keep the Inner senshi focused episodes from the 90's version to flesh out their characters in Crystal but we would still stick closer to the manga plotline.

If you LIKE those characters is another question but their presences were definitely more pronounced. something sailor moons author fully admits is that she’s aware that she tended to discard characters a bit to quickly before realising she wished she’d kept them around a bit longer. I truly truly appreciate this take SO much. There are just too many 90’s purists with nostalgia goggles who refuse to see the problems with StarS and cry to the heavens how so much better it is to Cosmos. I’m a fan of Naoko’s vision and she basically said that Cosmos was her manga come to life. It was the true story of how she wanted to finalize the chapter for Sailor Moon and boy did Cosmos deliver. I cried so hard and felt such emotions. While I do agree there was some pacing issues with Cosmos (I still argue they should’ve gotten a full season like Infinity did) it was only primarily in the first part as they had a lot of ground to cover, whereas the second part was paced pretty well since it pays off the world building part 1 had the burden to carry. I really loved the Stars arc: it was my favorite arc as it was an amazing bookend to the Sailor Moon saga and had callbacks all the way to the Dark Kingdom arc. It has the gravity of it being the final chapter for Sailor Moon and the stakes could not be higher. And it had a villain that didn’t need sympathy: she was a megalomaniac that wanted all the power to herself, and her cabal of fanatics were just as entitled and self-grandiosing as the master they followed. The only two true Senshi that followed her were Lethe and Mnemosyne who fell into apathy from all the endless fighting. StarS was rife with problems, most of which you pointed out, especially with the SuperS conclusion tacked in the beginning. The Animates were dumb and repetitive of every filler villain and Uranus and Neptune were annoying especially when their betrayal amounted to absolutely nothing: it pissed me off because they were still the loner Senshi who put themselves above their fellow Senshi and Princess, which is exactly what the Animates did to betray their respective Senshi. Ugh. I don’t fall into the trap of nostalgia which blankets over the story problems, the animation quality (yes it’s not perfect as 90’s purists would have you believe when they condemn Crystal and its quality issues), and “character development” via filler episodes. I love StarS don’t get me wrong for I loved it for the hot mess that it is. But no. StarS was not good and Cosmos was far superior.

I'm not sure if anyone saw the interview with Cosmos' director, Tomoya Takahashi, a male who directed episode 12 of KILL la KILL, loved the 90s anime and its visuals, brought that flavor into the new version and made everything pure perfection. Also, it's a shame Kotono Mitsuishi officially retired as Usagi/Sailor Moon after Cosmos is finished because she wanted to portray the manga version of Usagi, just for old time's sake. In another interview, Sailor Cosmos' VA and PGSM actress, Keiko Kitagawa, said that she and Kotono are best friends, much like her PGSM castmates. Even Naoko was at the booth at the time of Keiko's recording, and Naoko was impressed. It feels like in Japan, we came full circle on the franchise as a whole, mixing the incarnations into one epic finale. It's also a shame that the official Sailor Moon site rarely recognizes the live action, and wouldn't bother to sell it worldwide, not even to Discotek, which would sell immensely for one of the best adapted seriesthat explodes with characterization and plots unimaginable, like Sailor Dark Mercury or Kuroki Mio as Beryl's seed...even if the series was just for one arc, it's worth it. Thanks again for the OLD v NEW video, guys.

I think a lot of people are gonna disagree with us, but I agree with everything you said. In Stars, the incompetent villains lowered the stakes, and everything about Chibi-Chibi is totally different, all in the best ways. It's kinda weird that people don't know it's based on the Manga. I've told so many people that... but nothing really happened in Stars, and hardly any Saturn. The scene where she takes on Galaxia was amazing! I loved that. Plus I like the character of Galaxia much more, in the Anime I could decide if she was lazy or stupid

To be honest I grew up on the 90s Original Series and it's still a beloved classic to this day. I'm completely a huge fan of the lovely reboot Sailor Moon: Crystal even more for its dark faithful tone of the manga not afraid to bring back those controversy touching subject that the first series was scared to do back then...... FUN FACT: The series creator stated that the two movies Eternal and Cosmo considered Season 4 and 5 of Crystal with the two part films are like extended episodes.

One of my favorite moments in Sailor Moon is after Usagi defeats Beryl on the classic anime and give a super sincere speech about how the little things bring joy and how she wanted to be a normal girl. I am going to assume that this is only in the japanese version. The american dub probably put something generic in there.

Sometimes the way international dubs made changes like that still surprises me, because here in Latin America shows like Sailor Moon had little censorship or changes. Heck, Haruka and Michiru's relationship was kept intact, despite the dub being made in the late '90s in Mexico, one would think that a majority Catholic country would not allowed things like that on kids TV, but I think the standards of what could be shown on TV here in Latin America used to be pretty laxed, heck, as a kid I watched anime like Dragon Ball, B't X and Saint Seiya which had a lot of violent content, and other things like Ranma ½ which had more risqué content, and they were aired during the mornings or afternoons
@alessiacavalleri78332 ай бұрын
@@pablocasas5906 The shows you named were aired in the morning and afternoon here too but the censorhip was pretty heavy, until the mid 2000s it affected not only gender, sexuality and violence, many cultural references were also cut out or modified, not to mention the names being changed most of the times
@pablocasas59062 ай бұрын
@@alessiacavalleri7833 now that I remember, some of the anime I used to watch as a kid, like Dragon Ball, Digimon Adventure, Sakura Cardcaptor, Ranma ½, were translated/dubbed directly from the Japanese version, so they kept all of the references to Japanese customs and food, but some other shows like Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Medabots, Beyblade, among others, were dubbed using the U.S. English dub as a base, and thus they retained all of the modifications made in those versions. One of the things that confused me as a kid was how in Ranma ½ they referred to the 🍙 onigiri as "bolas de arroz" (rice balls), but in Pokémon they called them "rosquillas" (donuts), it wasn't until much later that I discovered that Pokémon was dubbed using the 4Kids version as a base. Curiously, both Ranma ½ and Pokémon were dubbed in the same recording studio, Audiomaster 3000

Subjectively I like the 90s for the fun fillers (which can be repetitive tbh) and how slower is the pace. However, the combat was awful and there were so many things that made no sense. The cosmos kinda fixed the issue, the combat is top tier and the plot follows a more logical approach. We get to learn more about the existent of other sailor senshi (which we didn't get in the 90s). However, we don't really see much of character growth due to the lack of filler. I love both the 90s and cosmos, I think they're both appealing for various audiences.

The 90s Stars is special to me. I know it has very sloppy writing but the Nehellenia arc and the big finals really hit those emotional beats for me. Stars was perhaps more formulaic than prior seasons because after SuperS did it's own thing and lost not only ratings but also a lot of the core staff so it makes sense from a business standpoint. That being said, the music and the bookend arcs are just so lovely and I love them dearly. Also the music lives rent free in my head That being said, Cosmos is an easy 9/10 where Stars is a 6/10. The story, the animation, the entire second half of part 2, I ugly cried for at least 45 minutes after that film. One of the core things about Usagi is that she will never give up hope. She will always see the best in others and try to help them better themselves. 90s anime Usagi will do this at the sacrifice of her personal well being. Manga Usagi has boundaries and makes known consequences for disrespecting them. You see her grow and develop and become mature as the manga progresses. The 90s anime is shonen in mini skirts.

A big inconsistency in the 90s anime version of this arc is that the minions just go on a wild goose chase for the star seeds like the Witches 5 in season 3, but this time around we know that "true" star seeds are only owned by sailor guardians, so why are they wasting time attacking random civilians and then leave when the actual sailor guardians appear?

If anything I wish Sailor Stars went more crazy, more off the wall, they've had decades of filler material they could pull from for final season material, and by going crazy they could have made the dark sailors less idiotic and more of a threat, while also giving the trauma the manga gave so easily. Plus it mixes up the formula with the pure hearts, they'd get attacked pure heart taken, no talisman, defeat monster pure heart goes back. If they mixed it up you never know if we getting a Phage this week or seeing one of the side characters get revealed to have a viable star seed. We'll either get a monster of the week, a scout of the week, and get to build a rivalry or animosity between the scouts. There' Usagi's friend Naru, having her have a star seed if not for the Earth maybe the Sun or something else, having her be the target find a star seed get a transformation and a fight scene, then you can have Mouse Crow Siren whoever's in charge of the ep kill her and take the seed. This was Usagi's friend a future guardian, she could watch Naru get defeated and taken. The scouts won't know who has a star seed or how to find them before the enemy. Usagi's traumatized. Then there' Usagi's brother Shingo easily another viable target for a Sailor Star Seed if Sailor Mini Moon can happen Shingo's equally viable. For example they have those chosen by the 7 rainbow crystals, some of them had supernatural abilities, have them be star seed targets let Ami reunite with the guy she had chemistry with. As it turns out he does have a viable star seed, maybe not of a planet but maybe he's capable of becoming Sailor Sagittarius, he's the core star seed of the constellation. Mars also had a love interest he could be a target and be another constellation Sailor Leo. He fights and the two can have a moment before one of the dark sailor scouts captures his star seed. So it's not just usagi who's traumatized. Heck Jupiter's ex, the running gag of him being compared to every guy she gets a crush on its the final season have him show up and be a star seed target, even if he's not a viable sailor it'd still be a banger of a Jupiter episode. So there could be Mouse took out Ami's love interest, letting there be a show down between her and Mercury, then Mercury can use her new power up move against Mouse, she gets defeated or killed, Sailor moon could try to purify her only for Galacitca or Siren or Crow to kill her. Even if Mouse found viable star seeds during her run, it doesn't matter since she lost to one of Sailor Moon's guardians and weakness isn't tolerated blah blah. Since this is all filler anyway, if you make Shingo, Motoki, Yuichiro, the Specter sisters, any of them true sailor guardians either by constellation or whatever and you give them cool scout attacks, later in the arc you can have it that the dark scouts are using the star seeds of their friends to increase their own power so they are using the attacks. You make use of side characters, can still create drama and stakes, and even not waste the new powers you invented and have the enemy team use them against the scouts. There's also the specter sisters, powerful agents from the future who had been corrupted and purified, easy targets to have star seeds and theres are viable. They get powers again and try to help the scouts just like they wished to back in the dark moon clan days when Sapphire was in trouble. Heck for a Hotaru episode have her "dad" be a target even if his star seed isn't viable he'd turn into a dark sailor soldier and she'd have to stop him. You could have some people who've been made into senshi monsters what if they remember that feeling and want to keep it they got a taste of wanting to be sailor guardians and sailor moon can turn them into sailor guardians but Galactica can Plus like with what's said in the video yes Mouse does know Sailor Guardians have star seeds, however there's 5 of them and one of her, her best bet is to either catch them out of transformation or fight them one on one, which she can try to do or while the scouts are dealing with her monster she tries to snipe them only for the starlights to get in her way and which there's 3 of them one of her, it's a problem. Siren actually did try to figure out who the scouts were at one point and found out usagi was sailor moon and crow used that later, they only bound by the plot.

I'm not a Manga reader, so I do still appreciate the 90s anime for what it gave. But, as someone who prefers subtitles to English Dub because of the risk of what writers intended possibly being lost in translation, I cannot deny that the modern Sailor Moon spelled the creator's vision far better than the 90s anime.

Pros of Crystal, to me; The action is fun, the animation is pretty, the transformations too (Not in season 1 with ugly CGI) The music is good AND the romance between usagi and Mamoru is more developped 🥰 Cons; The villains are less interresting than before. There's no romance between the general and Usagi's friend; the others have no personality and are barely there. When they fight the girls, it's too quick. I can't get suck into the battle 😐 No fillers so no episodes who developped the girls or just for us to have a good moment. Their friendship is so rushed! Usagi met one of them, imediately become her friend at the end on an episode. It was better in the OG, things took time and we saw their bounds growing. Crystal is not bad, just need more focused on the friendship and villains especially in season 1. Same for in season 2 with the cat girl and her sisters (The sinisters witches i think it was their name)

You know what? Fine. I'll watch Cosmos. I'd been avoiding the reboot since I quit partway-through its first season (for all the reasons you'd expect - same-y voice acting, low quality animation, removal of filler + character-building, and my own blatant nostalgia for the original), but you make a REALLY strong case for this movie actually being quite good. All the footage looks beautiful, the story-beats seem to be satisfying, and I don't know how the VA is going to be but maybe I can just deal with that and enjoy the rest for what it is. Thank you for changing my mind. :) Btw. I decided not to spoil the plot for myself any further and stopped watching at ~27min in because holy cow that looked brutal and felt like a good place to stop. XD

I had my problems the first time I watched Cosmos. Not because of the story writing (since it was far better) but now that I watched this video, I know what hit me wrong with Cosmos ... I don't like that fact, that Usagi, right after Mamoru vanishes, needs to step up to fight. If I had written the story (especially with the 90s audience in mind - even though I know it's the manga version) I would have taken another fifteen to thirty minutes to that film, to explore the star lights more (because this surely felt flat) and to take another approach of all the peoples dynamics - all being Sailor Senshi. Maybe that they even starting to work together? I just miss the interaction between the Senshi groups (minus Neptune and Uranus being suspicious as hell, even though they Galaxia betray surely was amazing and despite Pluto, Saturn and Chibisua getting more screentime which was desperately needed!). Also, in Cosmos it also doesn't make any sense for Seiya to fall in love with Usagi in that short of time and so much less moments to bond, which is another thing that grinds my gears: the pasting is just too fast for me. I think if they added a bit more "slice of life" before Galaxia takes the final step to attack Sailor Moon (maybe after her Sailor Pets all failes miserably, to fight the Senshis). Still, Cosmos is a way better option than the original! I just miss some parts from before ...

Honestly, the main reason why I always prefered Seiya over Mamoru is because he (she?) never stopped being just as dorky as Usagi, even after their identities are revealed, whereas Mamoru always felt more like a no personality token boyfriend after he remembered their past lives. To put it in other words, Seiya and Usagi had chemistry on both sides, whereas Mamoru and Usagi felt almost completely one sided, with her putting most of the effort.

I know the Japanese writer have worked so hard since this is the final Sailor Moon Crystal Series but they really haven't think things throught at all, I'm very sorry but this is my own honest opinion but I still prefer Sailor Moon Eternal two part films over Sailor Moon Cosmos two part films because at least there aren't too many characters killed un like this one.

I wish Naoko Takeuchi to create a new manga and put Mamoru(Tuxedo Mask) as the main character and make the story dark, action packed harem and make his character cool like Batman

18:18 the disrespect to Siren and Crow… not a single villain was good except for Galaxia. At least give credit where it’s due, Iron Mouse, Led Crow, Nyanko, and Siren all got chances to do stuff.
