Bought an ‘86 with 100k miles in high school and drove it through college and beyond. Had over 330k miles on it when I got rid of it. Loved that car. The speed sensitive power steering was great.

I love the 1st generation Accord. To me, that is by far the best looking one, inside and out. I have an 84 CRX, so I'm a fan of old Hondas. That radio is definitely not factory but is period correct. Also, it's engine is transverse, not horizontally opposed (a Subaru or VW old Beetle engine is horizontally opposed)

My favorite Honda of all time. My dad had a 78 that was identical to that except an A/T. Also it had that’s exact same cassette deck, so if it wasn’t factory, it was a big coincidence. And he was wrong, the auto was there in the beginning, not early 80s. Weird transmission that you had to shift from 1 to 2.

I currently drive a 10th gen 2020 EXL 2.0t Accord. My last Accord was a bought new 2006 EXL which lasted for 360,000 miles. I believe one thing that hasn’t changed for all of the generations of Accord is that if you properly keep them maintained you can pretty much guarantee yourself of getting 250,000 or more miles out of the vehicle. My son and I planned a trip in early May to the Honda Heritage Center in Marysville OH.

@@panzer_TZ I agree. The 9th generation Accord looked very premium and had such nice wheels for a car let alone an Accord. The 10th very my head looked like a Malibu. The newest isn’t bad but now that they’ve taken away the fun options of the 10speed auto, theyre making it very boring. Maybe theyre trying to help the TLX.

Fun video to watch. I wish you would have mentioned the actual weight of the first gen vs. the newest model. Also, you mentioned the thin a-pillar in the first gen, the wider a-pillar may make the passengers safer in the event of a roll over, but it creates a pretty huge blindspot. My mom was hit, walking across a crosswalk, by a car making a lefthand turn, and I am sure she was in the blindspot created by the a-pillar.

As a Honda fan, (my very first car as a young man was a very old Accord), I greatly enjoyed this video. However, I have to say that I think the current gen Accord is a step back from the prior generation in almost every way (except that there’s now a hybrid option). I feel like Honda didn’t prioritize this new American Accord as they have in the past, most likely because everyone is going for crossovers and SUVs now. BTW, I also want to give Tommy a shout out. I’ve been watching this channel for years, and I can still remember the first videos Tommy were in. He’s really grown into his role as a video host/presenter. His first few vids weren’t always the best, but he’s great now, just as good as dear old dad.

I could see someone daily driving those accords from the 1970's 80's and 90's today with Weather conditions permitting and still loving the drive and any repairs they might do it themselves but the newer ones, just call a tow truck and direct them to the dump. All you would really have to do on the older models is swap out the halogen bulbs for some quality HID replacements and your golden. Plus that Cassette player means that your friends and kids won't be messing with your stereo and constantly switching songs with apple or android car play. Also during the War Times ahead when the Internet gets restricted and shut down for Military Use only because of "Spying" Etc Cassettes and CD's will be a Must have again for those family trips and you will need the AM/FM radio to get News and Traffic Updates just like back in the 70's and 80's.

I only got rid of it due to the catalytic converter failing and it was very expensive. Fast forward , I got a 2010 Accord V6. It had VCM problems , but the piston ring recall fixed it. I was born in 2000, and from 1996-2004, my mom had a 1996 Honda Accord, then in 2004, my family had a 2004 Honda Odyssey, I drive that from 2015 with a learners permit, I got my license in it in 2016, and from 2016-2018, the Honda Odyssey was my first car. I currently driver a 2015 Toyota Camry. Also, my dad had a 2000 Nissan Maxima, then a 2007 Infiniti G35, which my brother used to drive, now my brother has a 2020 Honda Civic. My parents now has a Mercedes GLE and a Lexus RX. Anyway I have been around Asian car’s basically my whole life, especially, Hondas, I grew up with Hondas, with my mom having a 1996 Accord, and growing up with a 2004 Odyssey as the family hauler, I guess I jut’s prefer Asian cars, don’t get me wrong, I love American muscle cars and trucks too 😉. This is a pretty cool video, I love videos that show nearly every generation of a vehicle to show history. And ever time I see a older model especially in brand new condition, I get excited, especially older 80s and 90s Hondas and Toyotas.

'Love the original Accord. When I worked in Bahrein in the mid 70s, Honda had just launched the Accord. The co. bought one as a co. car and I had the use of it during office hours. But not until I had swotted up the Driver's Manual. It was such a thick volume being in Arabic, English and French! I lived in rural England and my personal car was a '74 Citroen 2CV6. So the Accord was for me the height of luxury. First time I ever experienced airconditioning, 5-speed gearbox. Fantastic handling with light, direct steering. Wonderful car and a great delight.

While my family and I are not entirely brand loyal, we often end up coming back to Honda for our cars over the years. I had an 07 Honda Civic Coupe, my parents have had a used 07 Accord and currently a barely used 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring, and my sister has a used 2012 Honda Odyssey for her large family. Not all their models or model years are hits, but it's hard to beat their consistent build quality, clean styling, really great A to B driving dynamics, and reliability. We've loved various Volvos, VWs, Fords, Mazdas, BMWs, and other cars and brands as well...but Honda has had the most consistent place in our garages at this point.

Thanks for making the effort to go about acquiring and explaining the 1978 Honda Accord's history and specifications. In the 80s, metropolitan area roads were beset by congestion for no more than two hours in the morning and evening, yet the Honda Accord, has either deliberately or passively, evolved to accomodate drivers to potentially sit in idle traffic for up to 20 minutes or more thru out the course of the day. .

What a cool video! My first car was a hand me down 1978 Honda Civic station wagon in blue with a four-speed transmission. That car desperately needed a fifth gear but otherwise was indestructible. I found a 78 civic at the Peterson Auto Museum and I can’t believe I fit in that car. Smaller than a Mini by far. When I started going to college 25 miles away from home I traded the 1978 in on a 1982 Honda civic 1300 FE because it had a 5 speed for the highway. Fuel economy version got 48 mpg. On a dollar of gas a day I could get to college and back home. My mom bought a 1986 Honda Accord, the one with the pop-up headlights. She had that car 15 years. Extremely reliable. Had other Hondas over the years. All Accords. I still drive Hondas today. I have a clarity plug in hybrid and I love it. Probably keep my clarity for a while and I hope Honda comes out with another plug in hybrid. Anyway, cool video.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. My first car was a pewter grey 1990 Accord EX manual that I bought new on July 26, 1990. I was 16. While I liked the previous generation I didn't fit in the LXi and I just had to have a sunroof. I felt the 4th gen was a huge leap forward, too. One thing you got wrong, however, was the hp rating of the gen 3. Only the fuel injected LXi made 120 hp, the LX and DX still utilized a carb and produced 98 hp. I remember reading about the million mile Accord; I got rid of mine just shy of 300k. I wound up getting a 2007 EX-L V6 in 2007. Both were great cars though the nose heavier V6 understeered more than I liked. It also had a firmer ride. Wonderful cars Accords are.

Great video and very enjoyable for an owner of multiple Accords. And I’d always thought that “evolution” was the sole noun form of “evolve”, but learned “evolvement” is a legit alternative.

I loved my 2001 Honda Accord V6. I bought it new and would have kept driving it. However, in 2007 one month before I was planning on driving from Texas to move to a different state, a crazy Texas driver forced me off the freeway into the center barrier. The Accord was a mangled mess, but I walked away with just a couple of mild burns on my hands from the airbag and a stiff neck. The guy lied to the cops and said I was trying to pass on the too-narrow shoulder between the lane and the barrier. The horrible Texas cops believed him and did not cite him. My Accord saved my life.

Companies need to make vehicles that can be repaired by the owner, rather than making it so you pretty much have to go to a " certified " technician. I changed the oil pan gasket in my 90s ford myself and it saved me thousands of dollars. New vehicles have too many plastic covers and/or the requirements of specialized tools that it makes it almost impossible to do any work yourself. Even oil changes are extremely hard to do yourself on a modern vehicle.

For me, Accord or Camry, you can't go wrong. In 70s to late 80s Accords were head n shoulder above its competitors.

The First Gen Accord you have is actually the face lift version. My dad used to own an older version of it, with rear view mirror on the bonnet. But otherwise looked so similar! I loved the car btw!

1:48 - Zackly, Tommy! I personally don’t understand the trend toward huge wheels and rubber-band-thin tires! As you pointed out, they’re a huge money sink if you hit a pothole, they reduce MPG, make the ride bumpier, and I don’t even see why people think they look better (I’d prefer to see more tire).

I miss the super low cowls of the earlier generations (3rd-5th) of Accord. Visibility was outstanding (and just look at the distance between the top of the tire to hood in a 90's era family sedan). Then the Europeans decided they needed pedestrian crash room between the hood and engine. Vehicle manufacturers weren't going to have separate designs because of the added cost and we got stuck with the higher cowls.

American car manufacturers had forgotten about where they were coming from back in the golden age Detroit… comfy smooth ride in their body-on-frame sedans like Cadillac and Lincoln etc. A slogan said ‘Standard Of The World’. And body style were stylish in each unique character. Make America Great Again. 🎉

I loved my 79 Accord Honda-matic. First car in 1990. My dad gifted me his. Tan over beige. It purred. Acceleration was fine. Handled well. Loved the well laid out dash. Coin box. It also has srsly weak doors. I had to slam the passenger one to shut it without rattling. My side flew open a few times. It threw a rod. Ate master cylinders. Went through two Honda Matics in 4 years. Honda had improvements to follow.

Calling the CB7 Accord "boring", but saying the 94 has "stylish design", man this guy has to be taking the the piss. Don't think I've ever heard anyone prefer 94-97 over 90-93 before, the car lost all its charm then!

My parents bought a 78 Accord LX 5 speed brand new in Jacksonville NC. Exactly the same as the one in this video. I had an 88 LX 4 Door 5 speed, a 92 4 Door EX 5 speed then a 2000 V6 EXL Coupe. My current daily driver is a 2011 Pilot.

This is what so many car builders (FIAT, Alfa, Lancia, for example) don't get right: the model succession is crucial for long term succes!

It's always going to be the 1986-2002 Accords for me. I've owned a 1991 LX Sedan, a 1990 EX sedan, and a 1994 Coupe. My mom bought a 2002 Accord V6 brand new and drove it for 11 years with no problems at all and bought a 2016 V6 brand new she still drives today. You just can't beat these cars for the price, longevity, and reliability.
