When people think of Disney, they always think fun, bouncy, and cutesy. But for some reason, we forget about the really sad or serious moments that come up pretty often in Disney movies. Btw, those moments are good because they treat the audience with maturity and respect.

The ending to the book is actually much sadder than the ending to the movie. SPOILERS! Well, in the movie they give Yeller a chance after he's bitten by the rabid wolf. They weren't sure he contracted rabies or not so they waited several weeks. In the end he did get it so they had to shoot him, but the book was a little different. In the book they don't wait. Their dog got into a fight with a rabid wolf, and they decided they couldn't take the chance and see whether or not he came down with it because it was too dangerous. They shoot him that same night. Now, it's most likely Yeller did get rabies but there's always that slight chance he didn't and they killed him unnecessarily.

i disagree. its way worse to see such a good dog debilitate into the madness of rabies rather than shoot him in the head while he is still trying to lick you in the face. its horrifying to watch yeller succumb to the disease. i remember crying when my mom read the book to me as a child, but it still gets me to this day when i watch the dog snarling and snapping at his family as the disease takes its toll.

If you are worried none of the animals who worked on this film were injured or abused. The fight scene between Yeller and a bear was actually rehearsed between the dog and a specially trained bear named Doug. The dog who played Yeller named Spike was a movie dog and he continued to appear in movies until he passed away in 1963.

This movie was the first movie I considered a favorite. My mom and dad would always try to take it away from me, because I would always cry my eyes out every single time. Then again, I also lost it during the scene in the Rugrats Movie where Tommy yells at Dill. But this movie... We moved to a family farm house that was in our family for hundreds of years, not long after I turned four, and I would run around the farm pretending this was my life. It was such a sweet, innocent, imaginative time in my life.

I know nothing about this movie, but the bear that is "fighting" the dog seems to be well trained. In the footage you're showing here, the bear just constantly "jumps" backwards without ever truely attacking, which is definitely trained behaviour - or at least very unusual. The rabbit being chased also doesn't look like a "real rabbit" in the scene you're showing, aka he seems to be a "special effect" of some kind because no rabbit moves in such a straight line normally without "hopping" in any fashion. So, I don't think those animals were in danger or harmed in those scenes - but those are just my casual observations, I'm no expert.
@strongrex2615
@strongrex2615 9 ай бұрын
I'm very impressed with the animal training in this movie, though at the same time it is scary to watch a dog chasing a mule that is knocking down a fence and dragging a human boy, and a cow with horns charging that same boy in the same shot. I'd like to hear more about what they did with the hogs. I mean, those are creatures you do NOT mess with, and we see the boy being attacked.
@CairnTerrier69

Great review. Just one minor correction. The kid was played by Tommy Kirk...a contract Disney actor who appeared in several other Disney films around that time period. Jeff York was the fat bearded “Mike Keel” guy who played “Bud Searcy” in the film. As for the animals in the film...the bear was a trained movie animal...the fight was the dog and he simply “dancing” around each other with trainers calling out commands. Snarling and roaring sound effects were added in. Notice that they make minimal physical contact. Same goes with the hog scene. Spike, the dog who played Yeller was owned and trained by Frank Weatherwax...the guy who owned and trained Lassie, Toto, and a few others. Spike was actually a trained for farm work and herding...a task where the dogs move cattle without inflicting harm. The humane society was on hand during filming to make sure all rules were followed.

I am 32 years old and I still can't watch the ending to this particular movie. It shatters my heart every time. I do agree with him that the boy who played the older brother was very good. I get a strange feeling both of these boys played in Swiss Family Robinson as brothers though....and the little one still annoyed me in that one too. lol

The biggest mistake people make about Old Yeller is thinking it is about a boy and his dog. It's really about a boy becoming a man. And if you don't cry your eyes out the first time you see it I don't think you're human.

I saw Old Yeller once, in the mid-60s, at one of the local drive-ins. I was somewhere around five. Shortly after seeing it, my parents brought home a pair of small to medium-sized dogs, one of them having similar coloring to old Yeller, so, of course, we named him Yeller. I loved the hell out of that dog. Last night, I found myself a good torrent for the movie, and started watching it a few minutes ago. Felt like seeing what people had to say about it, before I continue. My memory of the film is pretty hazy, given my age at the time, and how many years have passed. To be honest, the ending is what's kept me from wanting to see it again for many years. My Yeller also had a tragic end...someone deliberately crushed our back fencing down to let the dogs out--and that's not something I care to think about. Aside from the importance of washing hands thoroughly after handling them (they can carry salmonella), there is no reason why children shouldn't handle non-venomous snakes. You're cracked. Still, aside from that bit of lunacy about snakes, this is a fair and reasonable review. Not in-depth, but ought to be helpful to people who are considering it, or somehow never heard of it. I'll probably check out some of your other videos, hope they don't have anything as silly as the rant about snakes and kids.

+ScatterBrained When did he do that? The footage alone doesn't rly spoil that much for the ending except you're rly trying to figure it out.

I know the ending because I read the book, and it's even sadder in the book than in the movie, at least in my opinion.

I think what works with this one is that it does not dumb down the picture. It doesn't lecture or try to talk to the audience or assume the viewer is a dumbass. It just puts it out there and lets the viewer make his or her own decisions on what they are watching. It's not that Disney doesn't WANT to try - it's clear that they do - it's that they let the VIEWER try, empowering them and giving them the ability to decide how they want to feel about the picture, rather than try to impress upon the audience what the studio thinks the picture should be as a film.

You are afraid to spoil a film that is way older than you? There's a point when spoilers are okay, and this movie has passed that point a long long time ago.

I see a mistake: Travis, the older son, was played by Tommy Kirk, Jeff York, who played Mike Fink in Davy Crockett and the River Pirates, plays Bud Searcy

I remember this film from way back and it's really a good slice of life movie. It's a tough movie also but it shows that sometimes life is tough and animal owners have to make hard decisions. That's enough said without spoilling it too much.

I'm pretty sure it's impossible to spoil the ending to Old Yeller. I think it's something you're born knowing now. It's like part of the collective human consciousness. Hell, long before you actually sit down to watch the movie you've heard the ending referenced a billion times in pop culture.

Regarding the animal treatment, it's the same with the original Incredible Journey. They have a dog trying to play with a porcupine, a cat being chased and nearly caught by a lynx and various other cringy things. The 90s remake, Homeward Bound, proved that you don't need to actually put the animals in danger to get good animal action.

This film is not as sad as where the red fern grows. I saw that when I was about ten, waaay before I saw old yeller, and that made this Disney film a walk in the park!

If "The Dog in my Life", about 50s teen trainer Cary Unkelbach,were a flick,. it wqould be happier, since the lab,in this case, Thumper, is on the back with a now geroiund Cary (Scholastic,1966)

Someone's probably mentioned this before, but I have a version of the VHS with some bonus, behind-the-scenes type stuff at the end, and they talk quite a bit about the precautions they took for the animal's safety. Albeit I haven't watched it in a while, but the fight against the bear in particular, they said the original audio was muted and the barks and growls reproduced post-production because of the animal trainers offscreen shouting orders the whole time.

wait. Did he just say that Fess Parker’s son in the film is played by Jeff York? No, he is played by Tommy Kirk. Jeff York plays the adult lazy neighbor who drops by to check on the family when the father is away. When Jeff York’s character has anything physical to be done he has his young daughter do it.

He's right, he is reading too deep into the animal fights. In a behind the scenes look of the movie, they said the animals were specially trained not to hurt each other.

All I can see is the Slappy Squirrel episode that had 'Old Yellow' as the punchline scene in a story that revolved around convincing Skippy that 'Bumbi's Mom' was just an 'actor'. That and Wakko slamming 'Old Screamer' (The Director in a dog costume) with a mallet after getting a new cuddly puppy. XD
