I use Gaia on an old phone (android) without a sim. I've never had an issue with it crashing. I prepare rides on a pc at home, sync it to the cloud, load onto to the app, and away I go. It's my main navigation app for recreational riding. For day to day, on the bitumen, I use Google maps.

I find Gaia maps to be the best for tracking, although the detail is not as detailed as Hema 4x4 explorer, Hema is having serious issues with offline maps and the cloud as of Dec 2024

@chrisjsmith61 isn't Dec '24 still in the future?

Love the comparison video thanks for taking the time to run the same route, with the different apps, so we could see the difference 👍 looking forward to more of your navigation videos !

I run Hema, in regards to the tracks you create not being visable, you have to go into settings on app and do a manual ‘sync’ to retrieve from hema cloud onto device.

I usually do not use to many apps. I do listen to music while riding though. Take care, ride safe.

Great work! Very helpful. I was using Gaia and it was also crashing when using it. Will give OSMAnd a try now. Cheers

So OSM will give visual turn prompts (no audio) when on a track? I downloaded OSM free version and it wouldn’t import a GPX track. I use GAIA to create a route, export it to a file on my phone, convert it to a track with GPS Visualizer, save it to my phone, import the track to GAIA and my Garmin Tread. I haven’t found an app that will do all that. My Garmin is my main navigation tool to follow a track or route, GAIA to create routes (it won’t convert routes to tracks)

Thank you - very helpful. I'm just wondering how these all compared to a typical dedicated Garmin GPS unit please?

Thanks for the great video. I am looking up Speedometer, but it is retiring a lot of hits in the App Store. Any chance of getting a link to the one you reviewed? Thanks, NM.

@@MotoRidesAustralia thanks so much. More GPS apps and devices should announce waypoints. I like the idea of setting a waypoint up before, and one after a turn / obstacle. The first one tells you to ‘turn in 400m’, and the second one tells you distance till next turn.

Nice look at a few of the apps available- cheers for that. And yep, it's OsmAnd for me (as a back up to my Tomtom). Great free app, although not perfect- as you touched on. Cheers

I’d love to see a version of this video using a Chigee for the display. Maybe they could hook you up for a review version? 😉

@@MotoRidesAustralia a lot of the existing reviews are really superficial. I’m keen to hear what it’s like using the apps you mentioned via CarPlay when you’re out adventuring without a signal… I also prefer to keep my phone on me (no power), I’m curious if it’s practical given the Chigee requires the phone to do all the heavy lifting…
