Even knowing the twist, the movie is still masterful. Many movies with twist endings completely rely on the shock value of the ending but Oldboy is a masterpiece from start to finish. Thankfully, the reveal about Woo-jin's sister is less well known and that scene is just as shocking and impactful as this one.

What you got to understand is that this movie is not about incest. Its about revenge. Two men would fall to their respective tragedies because they got so consumed with taking revenge on each other. From Oh Dae-Su's perspective, he thought that his quest for revenge would reward him with redemption. Instead he only dug himself a deeper hell hole he is never going to get out of. Whatever burden he had before has now become much heavier and he has to live with it. From Lee Woo-Jin's perspective, he should be celebrating because he was the more successful in taking revenge. But what will he celebrate? Nothing of what was lost was brought back. He still has all that pain he carries. Except now he really has nothing left to live for having dedicated his existence for his revenge. In both perspectives, nothing of what was lost was really taken back. And that is the truth about revenge.

I'd say he's a monster Dae Su didn't do anything wrong in telling someone about what Woo Jin and his sister did yet Lee Woo Jin ruined multiple people's lives for revenge even people who had absolutely nothing to do with it like Mido and her mother. really bugs me that Dae Su didn't at least get to kill him after Woo Jin called Mr Pak to not tell Mido the Truth the ending wouldn't have changed much just that Dae Su after he makes the phone call goes into a blind rage and grabs Woo Jin who just accepts his fate and Dae Su stabs him to death or something.

@@martymitch8375 Director Alfred Hitchcock was once asked whether or not he would make a film adaptation of Dostoevsky's 'Crime & Punishment'. He replied that he would never do it. He further elaborated that its possible to make a great film out of a bad novel; its also possible to make a great film adaptation of a good novel. However, it's impossible to make a better film adaptation of a great novel. As the film would always suffer in comparison. The problem with most of the film adaptations is that they adapt it from great novels or books believing that it would be as good as the original work. And, the producers finance it due to the popularity of the original work.

Dae Su was basically been “marinated” for 15 years by Woo Jin, meticulously and methodically all in the purpose of completing the plot. When we watch the movie for the first time, we were all lead to believe that it’s Dae Su’s revenge, but the revelation reveals that it was in fact, Woo Jin’s revenge afterall. Woo Jin lost his own sister and 15 years imprisonment was to agonize Dae Su, and at the same time to block his contact with his own family (especially his own daughter, who will be the main ingredient for Woo Jin’s revenge). Woo Jin’s glimpse of his elevator past scene and his own suicide also shows us the glimpse of his own psyche and also hints that he too was suffering all this time, but to linger on to finish/complete his revenge for his own sister’s death and finally to kills himself to follow/meet his sister at last. Very powerful film and many MANY subtle double meanings in this film…. Brilliantly made

@garammaru3272
@garammaru3272 3 ай бұрын
But for Oh Dae-Su, it is quite absurd. If you watch the flashback, all Oh Dae-Su did was simply told Ju-Hwan 'Hey, that pretty girl in your class, she was with another guy.' He also told Ju-Hwan to not tell anybody about it and after telling that story to Ju-Hwan, he moved to Seoul so there's no way he realize it became a rumor. One of his former classmate, barber, remembers Soo-Ah as innocent and well-mannered girl but she was seeing some guy, which is accurate. She heard from fellow classmate Choon-Shim, who knew Ju-Hwan, so rumor was from Dae-Su -> Ju-Hwan -> Choon-Shim. Up until Choon-Shim, it was quite accurate but it appears some people start adding more stuffs which ended up making Soo-Ah as slut. Also, we should remember it was 1970s~1980s of Korea. Back then, even if you are dating someone, you can be considered as lecherous.

@MetalizedButt
@MetalizedButt 4 жыл бұрын
Noah Millwood he had already gone mad, even before discovering of her true identity. the years of isolation in the hotel prison made him mad, and his acting pulled that off convincingly. Brolin’s on the other hand, didn’t give you the same sense of desperation to get out that the original character had. It also didn’t really give you a good time frame of how long he was locked up for, unlike the original. It’s not only the acting, but the directing that was a total flop. I could go on and on with the comparisons. Anyway, the cool part is that in the end we will never truly know if the hypnotism worked or not, that is up to the audience to ponder and interpret.

*Be it a stone or a grain of sand, in water they sink as the same* - Woo-Jin holds Dae-Su responsible for Soo-Ah's death for 2 reasons: 1) Dae-Su spied on them having sex because he was jealous (he had flirted with Soo-Ah), and it's why he exposed them to his friend - who goes around cruelly slut-shaming her. 2.) Dae-Su was so self-involved that he forgot the whole thing. This majorly offends Woo-Jin, because the gossip led to Soo-Ah's mental breakdown.

Then you missed the point of Woo-Jin's key quote "be it a stone or a grain of sand, in water they sink as the same." Oh Dae-Su exposed them out of jealousy. It may have seemed unimportant to you, but it sparked off a chain of events that 100% led to Soo-Ah's suicide. Dae Su's friend went around slut-shaming her, causing her to periods to stop and her belly to swell. Do you not realize how frightening & mentally damaging that would be for a teenage girl?
@iluvlafferty

@@maciek8159 Dae-Su told on them because he was angry that Soo-Ah rejected him. I'm not sure he even knew they were brother and sister at that point; he exposed them out of jealousy. He told the worst possible person about it, because his friend was a huge gossip and gave a false impression of Soo-Ah to the whole school. It was wrong of them both to slut-shame her and caused her mental breakdown.

How much more painful would it be if before these sequences of scenes, back in the love hotel, there was a scene where: Instead of only a short time before Oh Dae-Su was to meet Lee Woo-Jin in the penthouse, Lee Woo-Jin hid throughout the city for months. Mido exits from the bathroom. Oh Dae-Su is lying down in the bed, exhausted after a long love session. Mido walks slowly towards Oh Dae-Su until she suddenly stops. He looks at her, curious. Mido takes out something she's hiding behind her back. A pregnancy test that's positive. They think they'll run off into some faraway place where they'll live out the rest of their lives happily ever after. Then the scene of Lee Woo-Jin starts, where he explains everything including Mido's planned pregnancy.

If he wrote this exact same story, you'll be whining about how he "disrespected the main character", "a revenge tale that doesn't end with revenge" and what not. I find it odd to see this comment here, my guess is that you were complaining about how terrible TLOU2's story is and someone who likes that game told you to watch Oldboy. Of all the complaints I read about TLOU2 I think to myself, "Man, if these people watch Oldboy, they'd probably gouge their own eyes out" 😂😂
@dathunderman4
@dathunderman4 2 жыл бұрын
@@aeonlincoln5474 nah. TLOU2 would’ve been much better if they took notes from Oldboy, and Abby instead actually bested Ellie in her path to revenge. If Oldboy was instead like TLOU2, Oh Dae Su would have had Woo-Jin at knife point, only to spare him due to having a flashback of MiDo. TLOU2 isn’t bad because Ellie didn’t get to complete her revenge, it was bad because the “revenge is futile” theme wasn’t properly executed. Makes no sense for Ellie to have no problems killing hordes of ppl, traveling hundreds of miles across the county in an apocalypse, only to spare her villain’s life at the very end. That just doesn’t seem like something a real character would do.

Personally, if I were in Dae-Su's shoes (and thank God I'm not), I would've gone public with everything this bastard had orchestrated with his vast wealth, just to show the entire human race what the 1% are really capable of if allowed to reign unopposed - not to mention the people who happily follow their orders, regardless of what they entail, if the paycheck is big enough. Mi-do might have gone mad from the revelation, but it would be the only other way for Dae-Su to achieve justice after Woo-jin's sadistic masterplan had already reached fruition.

"NYAH NYAH NYAH NYAH NYAH NYAH, I MADE YOU HAVE SEX WITH YOUR DAUGHTER, NYAH NYAH NYAH NYAH NYAH NYAH!" For real, this twist absolutely destroyed and shocked me. That absolutely brilliant scene with the photo album was so perfect for a horrific realization. Once I saw where this was headed, I was like "No. No, it can't be. No." This was the most unexpected direction to take the story, swaying from usual revenge movies. Makes sense Woo-jin would meticulously plan what happens to Dae-su after holding him for so long, but this was the ultimate evil thing he could do. Wonder what Soo-ah would do if she could know what her brother did to a man who caused her death in the most unwitting way possible.
