Brings back old memories, I owned a 1953 Prefect PKP 959 at the age of seventeen and had to rebuild the engine after six months of owning it. I t was a good experiance and the blog has brought back many memories.

A really enjoyable tinkering session. (Inspired me to go outside and get my MM running!) Many thanks and good luck with the fuel problem.

I was getting distracted, admiring the technical artwork of the repair manual and parts list. No CAD there, all beautifully done by hand. Happy New Year to you and your family.

A bit late coming to this party but I have only just found your videos, quite by accident (and now subscribed). It was interesting watching you sort out an exhaust blow, as this has just happened on our 100e, Lizzie the Anglia (and our channel name). The problem for us was the gasket under the blanking plate, well, it was the exhaust manifold as there is a slight step meaning the gasket failed to seal correctly. I have had to remedy, temporarily at least, using some exhaust paste to take the space, maybe a couple of thou. A job for winter will be to have a look at a replacement manifold or what I can do to machine down the existing one. Sadly I do not have a mill (I wish I did at times!). It's also nice to see the youngsters getting their hands dirty. My son is 16 and helping out on Lizzie with plenty of enthusiasm. I'm at the point where I am getting him to do a lot of the work as it's the only way he will learn. The first job he did was to re-fit the mechanical fuel pump, Lizzie had an electric pump fitted when we purchased her, which failed, as did the replacement.

Glad you found the channel, yes I've had lots of problems with fuel pumps over the last few years - including on the Standard 8, and the Dodge pickup too, so I feel your pain!!
@lizzie-the-anglia4 ай бұрын
@@oldclassiccarUK Thankfully, since Will refitted the original (and I am touching wood!), there have been no issues on the fuel side of things, don't talk about gearboxes though... With all that said, next month we are taking Lizzie to the Old Ford Show at the British Motor Museum, about a 100-mile drive from us. Going to be an adventure.

Hi, yet again, a brilliant video. It's lovely to see you and Harley working together. I remember when I was Harleys age - 54 years ago, my Dad who was an ex RAF Engineer was always 'tinkering' with something and I was always there watching and 'helping'. At the time I had no idea what invaluable lessons I was learning - all sorts of tricks of the trade etc, and they stood me in good stead in later life - thanks Dad. Harley is very lucky to be able to learn at your side, and absorbing 'stuff' like I did. I hope you get the Prefect running again soon and am looking forward to your next video. Happy New Year to you both - take care :-)

The joys of classic cars, they run then you tinker and they refuse to fire up! You know what? You cannot always put your finger on it. I have always followed the rule of walking away and returning later (as you did) that way you could have a light bulb moment, and no I have not heard of those bulbs either. I am glad you talked about deasl, I tell people that it is the best but some don't believe me haha ! Thanks for the video and I will wish you a happy new year. 👍

Thank you for the video which was good to watch on New Year morning over a cuppa! And happy New Year to you guys. I am looking forward to more of the same, thank you for the effort to share. By the way, you could have searched for the cylinder head tightening sequence in your manual and loosened the head nuts in the reverse order. I don't think it would make any difference though. Much hotter here in South Africa, just under 30 C here with daily thunderstorms. with lightning.

Hi. Really enjoy watching the old side valve engine work. Takes me back to 1968 when I had a 1952 Prefect for running around the fields with my friends. It was a headlights in the wing model. Of course being kids we eventually destroyed it and is now buried in an old quarry on the farm. I do wish I had it now! 😪 ps used to run it on paraffin after warming it up on expensive petrol. Happy New year.

Interesting video Rick. My very first car was an Austin A40 Devon. Once my biking days are done and I have room in the garage I want to get another to ‘tinker’ with. These are really useful instructional tips. A happy New Year to you and Harley.

The illustrations in that parts manual are just stunning! Looks like the fuel pump's thrown it's cards in but I can't help wondering why it didn't run when you filled the float chamber. Anyway, thanks for the entertaining and informative videos and wishing you and yours a happy new year!

As one who rebuilt several E93 A engines in the 70,s , take it from me that they are always a pain to get started again. I normally resorted to a tow in 2nd gear.
@oldclassiccarUK2 жыл бұрын
I don't remember having any issues with the E83W pickup that I used to run, and haven't encountered problems with the Anglia so far, but I remember reading that fuel vaporisation can be a common problem with the sidevalve Fords, due to the proximity of the pump and pipework to the exhaust manifold. Thanks for watching.

Lovely video ideal for watching on a chilled New Year's Day. I'm glad I'm not alone in finding things I'd forgotten about in the garage/shed 😂 I assume the pockmarked castings were as from new and a reflection on the manufacturing process? Happy New Year

Looking forward to the next instalment , fuel supply and spark , don't forget that if you have no spark or a very weak one after cleaning the points that the condenser may be faulty in the distributor , a weak coil may be the problem too . The insulation around the windings ( it's over 70 years old now ) inside may be failing reducing the HT to the spark plugs.
@oldclassiccarUK2 жыл бұрын
Hi, all good advice, it looks like the coil and various ignition parts have been changed recently - although that's no guarantee that they actually work well!!!! Thanks for watching

Did I miss the bit where you smear the exposed manifold studs and threads with high temperature resistent copper grease to make future removal easy?

I could have added more (I usually do) but this time I left the residue old grease on the threads, I might re-visit them at some point as they're easy to get at

I thought the Volvo was a keeper. More usable 'modern'?
@oldclassiccarUK2 жыл бұрын
It was going to be, but the complexity of a) fuel injection b) LPG c) the previous owner's many mods and additions to wiring etc put me off, plus old autos aren't the best either IMO so while it was a fine looking car, it didn't really gel with me. Plus it was too smart to leave outside now that the Prefect is in its place indoors.

@@oldclassiccarUK Loving the series. Ford Prefect of this vintage was my first car as soon as I passed my test when I joined REME in 1966. If I remember rightly, I gave a tenner for it and ended up running it around Aldershot Stock Car Stadium during intervals before I sold it to a regular racer for the same tenner! Don't know what he did with it because having done my 18 months basic mechanic's training, I was posted out to a poor unsuspecting LAD (Light Aid Detatchment)!
