currently doing a master copy of this entire painting as a senior project in my undergrad FA studies and I’ve been scrambling to find videos to help me expand my concept of technique. i’m so used to using transparency that laying paint on the canvas the way the masters do terrifies me. stumbling across your page earlier today was a godsend. thank you so, so much for these videos!!!

How skillfully you put the expression in the eyes in place. My hands shiver whenever I paint eyes. I loved the attention to minute details and blending of colours to produce the reflected light without compromising on the expression on the face. Marvellous!

While I would not call this a poor copy of the original, I think it should be clear to everyone that Velasquez is so incredibly capable that no one can approach his "felt" technique. This is exactly why the word "ineffable" exists. In the end, the best painting is about expressing the inner genius, insights, nuances and emotions of the original artist. This is why the cream always rises to the top. It cannot be simulated.

This ainting example of this master-work is so incredible. I am color-blind in the problem areas of red/green, so, I have relate my colors to my knowledge of the grey-scales. I have tried to identify the suble changes in the face, depending on where the lights are, but I have so much left to learn. Thank you, this demonstration is helpful, but the dialog along with it would be helpful. I am attempting to paint an oil portrait of my 4 year old granddaughter, but it isn't going very well. I wish there could be a way of sending an image of my painting so I could receive some valuable help. Thank you for this incredible lesson, MSG Leum

I think it's a very good study copy. Although I don't know if you're trying to reproduce Velazquez's technique. If so, you shouldn't paint "physically" all the colours you see in the painting. Many of the tones you see are only optical colours, the result of the mastery with which Velazquez superimposed and worked the layers of paint.

I strongly disagree with "coloring in" with a very small brush like this. Surely that is antithetical to how the Masters painted. --- and--- who paints with gloves on?????

@@verydrunkcat Cuts on hands?? Look, if you are that afraid of working with pigments that have been used for thousands of years, then just don't use them! In my view, many current "artists" are trying too hard to have it both ways. They want to pretend to be artists in the time-honored traditions, but they are careful to wear plastic gloves all the while. It's all just so silly. I am not impressed with ANY such artists, by the way. Just look at the final outcome: their paintings!

@@KpxUrz5745 I did not see technique in this copy, only coloring. The only merit was mixing the colors before. But it is too far from being a master copy, it could be a copy, but you can never imitate Velazquez's technique, you can never imitate his brushstroke. This can only be called a studio, but to say that it is a master copy is too pretentious. Titian's Adam and Eve is an impressive work and Rubens himself made a study and master copy of that painting, and that is really a master copy.
