I feel as though there are definitely arguments for and against this games' approach over other Tekken games (and honestly most other fighting games) in regards to stages, since with the former it gives a sense of atmosphere but can also become somewhat same-y for some (personally I would say that Tekken 4's stages are distinct from each other despite the much shorter distance range in locations), while the latter can provide a greater variety in visuals but at the cost of potentially losing that atmosphere.

The story behind Tekken 4 was fascinating actually cause it kinda implied that Jin was a bit of a fraud. It tells how the Iron Fist Tournament in Tekken 3 was actually won by Paul who even defeated Ogre (The God of fighting himself) and Jin himself as well, Paul defeated the Poster boy and Protag. Jin just happened to be there when Ogre transformed into a second form to take him out after Paul did all the work and Jin took all the credit despite that Paul literally remained undefeated in the entire tournament. Paul's story even tells us how he was robbed as the winner but people disregarded him and flocked to Jin causing Paul to fall into depression and alcoholism.

Tekken usually does a weird thing where the endings are actually canon just only small bits of each one, At least in terms of the Mishimas and a few select characters. for example Lei, Steve and Nina's endings here in T4 are all connected and show their version of things but each segment has a part that happened overall. In T4's technical canon ending combining the three family members. from the final round of the tournament Heihachi wins by beating Kazuya, inviting Kazuya shortly afterwards to see Jin in hopes of capturing Kazuya, Kazuya accepts and becomes influenced by Devil as they enter, after a brief exchange Devil uses his powers to knock Heihachi out, Kazuya manages to overpower Devil and gains control over his half of devil gene, promptly awakening Jin shortly after, Jin enters a rage and defeats Kazuya, flooring him completely but by that time Heihachi is conscious again and attempts to defeat Jin, he fails also. Jin attempts to kill the pair starting with Hei but a vision of his mother Jun stops him as a last cling to not fall to their level. Jin then flies off through the roof while Kazuya and Heihachi are staggered and recovering, only to soon find themselves in the middle of a G-Corp assassination attempt AKA Tekken 5 Intro.
@sonomni3 жыл бұрын
@Darth Misogyny Yeah, some of the character endings are canon, though they leave out that they won the tournament since *Heihachi* was the one that won it (Jin having been kidnapped in which the officials announced that he loses the tournament by default.).

Here it is, my first Tekken, my older sister got T4 with her PS4 back in Christmas of 2001 and I played so so so so much of it, I recognize it as a bit of a black sheep in the franchise obviously the nostalgia is strong, I love the aesthetic it has, the narrator, the announcer, the stages, the music, the characters, the "get ready for the next battle" screen, the Tekken Force mode and of course at the time the graphics looked amazing to me. Later on I got T3 for my PS1 and TTT when I got my own PS2 and played the hell out of those too but oh good T4 that's home.

This game had some great atmosphere man, the stages and the music. The mobility the characters had in this one felt more loose, like you could move them around a lot more freely than the installments that came afterwards.

In my humble opinion, Tekken 4 remains to this day to be not only the best of the series, *(outside of 3 & Tag Tournament)* but one the best fighting games ever--it's even in my top 10 of favorite videogames, period. The grounded storylines, the music, art direction and gameplay gave Tekken a whole different vibe to me than all the others, whether well received or not. Definitely a PS2 classic!

Definetley a huge departure for the series. A few of us played a lot at my local arcade back in the day, definitely became more popular once console release. The infinites and combo videos by Castel on Tekken Zaibatsu were amazing back in the day.

I feel like the whole "Making Kazuya a better character" is because of the better story presentation, which helps define aspects of him and his story. They definitely dropped the ball on a few things, mainly his relationship with Jun or the would be conflict of his good and bad side in 2, early on, but also never really improved afterwards.

I'm a little biased because I played so much of it in the arcade at my local theater when I was a wee lad, but Tekken 4 is definitely my favorite Tekken. Best story, best soundtrack, best stages, best of everything in my opinion. I fondly remember being terrified of fighting Paul in this game because of one time where he whooped my ass in the laboratory level and it took me like 20 tries to get past him, but damn did it feel good.

I feel like Kazuya started out with good intentions, but slowly just spiralled into being an anti-hero. It's sort of a Mishima curse. It was revealed in 7 that Heihachi had the same issue, and Jin pretty much has that issue too. Sucks to be a Mishima bro..
