It's funny how they work so hard to make piracy more convenient.😒 I do have an old B&B e-reader (and use it along with my newer Onyx Boox). Yes, the battery might die in a year or two, but for now I don't like to be bullied into scrapping a perfectly working e-reader. Side-loading books sounds just fine.

This type of thing needs to change if we’re to have any kind of sustainable future. In this case it’s more justified since these are really old by now, and probably aren’t usable. But then you start getting into recyclability and materials.

Well, Amazon implemented a new policy, the only supported ereaders are current and previous gen, nothing else will ever receive firmware updates

@@auspiex Yep. That one was much worse than this.

I think what needs to happen is to have a planned obsolescence schedule that is established up front when you purchase the device. All e-readers are eventually going to fail due to the battery wearing out and outdated software. They could establish that Barnes and Noble will offer full support for 15 years*, because by that time I think a majority of the devices will have failed. Then they offer a significant discount for the purchase of a replacement e-reader, and simple migration of your purchased e-book library to the new device. I've have a Nook Color (NC) and due to its age I recently decided to replace it with the new Nook 9" Lenovo Tablet. Although the new device is nice, it is not as easy to use as my NC. For one thing, when you selected "Books" on the NC it would list all of the books whether they were purchased or sideloaded, but so far it seems that with the Lenovo Tablet it doesn't seem to have a reader app like the one in the NC and you have to access the non-purchased e-books via going through the file folders. Plus, being an Android device it has so many apps that it seems like the e-reader part is almost an afterthought. Still, I will just have to get used to it, but for now I will continue to use my NC as my main e-book reader. *Added: I should have said "15 years after the device is no longer sold."

Nope not justified at all. My Sony eReader from same time still works just as fine cuz better built but allows direct file transfer.

There isn’t an e-reader on the market that can match, or come close, to the vivid colors of Nook Color. 😭

I've sideload books for years. It's not difficult. The Nook Color 7" tablet is the perfect size. Too bad but there's always a workaround even if the battery charge only lasts for a few hours. Thanks.

If I log on to the B&N website and pull up my library I see no way to download a book in order to sideload. Were you able to to so? If yes please let me know how. I do not want to get rid of my tablet.

My Nook Simple Touch With Glowlight was on the list. Talk about being old. Was glad they offered a something to upgrade but had already moved on to the Nook Glowlight 4 not to mention Paperwhite and various Kobos.

I just found my old nook. This is sad. The device works fine. The charger wire casing has strangely flaked away . I happened to search KZbin and came across this video . Glad I did . Maybe I’ll take it back to Barnes and noble

I remember the nook hd 10 it was a great screen i also remembered your coverage on the nook hd tablets

Oh, right no more updates, so no more access to the store. That happens with older models yes. And what is older? Some 6 year old ebook readers still can access stores. I think the kobo's I have[some pretty old] did get a security update too for this reason. New security certificates. No new functionality, just.. the ability to keep using the store and central servers.

Kobo is an open device that can be file loaded directly with usb connected to PC. I still use my original Sony PRS-600 and it works just as good as in 2011. I use pirate bay and libgen to get epubs for it as well as the local library.

I still have my nook colour and nook HD+. BUT I understand why it's done. I will be upgrading.

Sony did this to me Navi in the day when they shut their store down. You should be able to use Adobe digital editions and/or calibre to sideload. Happy to have my 10 year old kobo that works fine and still gets updates.

Pocketbook pro 602 from 2010 can still get mobile phone batteries with 4 copper contacts which will work with it if a universal phone battery charger is purchased. The battery is removable by sliding the back off.

Blocking me from downloading content I've already purchased because I have an older Nook is arbitrary, artificial, and unethical! I can still download Kindle books on my Nook HD, BUT NOT NOOK BOOKS! I love my Nook HD as it is the perfect size and offers higher definition than anything else on the market! (1440 x 900). I'm very upset about this!

I have nook paid apps that will not transfer over to the new device. I am returning it. Geez!

I hate this. While I do understand why it just sucks. Especially because I can’t buy or access books from the NAMESAKE of my Ereader but guess what works just fine? The Kindle app on my Nook HD+. Freaking crazy. I get it. I bought it brand new in 2013 and it’s been 11 years since then. I want either a Kindle or one of the eink tablets that run Android so I can have my B&N, Kindle, and Kobo apps while getting the benefits of reading in an eink screen.
