I'll let the video speaks itself to describe these beautiful historic elevators
To start with, these are by far the OLDEST and BEST elevators I've ever ridden in my life! One of the main reasons why I wanted to go out to Lisbon when my cruise stopped here before sailing to Madeira, is to ride these historic elevators. Yes, the "Elevador de Santa Justa", or better known as the "Santa Justa Lift" is a historic public elevator facility in the old part of Lisbon that links the Baixa neighborhood in the lower part with the Largo do Carmo/Carmo Square in the upper part. It was built in 1902 and now a national monument since 2002, that is, at its 100th anniversary.
These elevators were originally steam powered before they were converted into electric in 1907, and are still manually controlled since then. As you can tell by the silver plate inside the car, these elevators were manufactured by London-based R. Waygood & Co., which later merged with OTIS and became Waygood Otis in the 1910s. Round trip of these elevators costs € 5.30 if you don't have a yellow Carris pass, otherwise it's free. And be prepared for the long line to ride these elevators. I was so excited that I forgot to prepare my cash when I was about to enter the car lol :P
Oh, and sorry for the excessive wind sounds in this video. It was a windy day here in Lisbon.
Speaking of Waygood, did you know that Indonesia actually has an antique Waygood elevator which is believed to be the OLDEST elevator still operating in the country? It is located at the London Sumatra Building in Medan, North Sumatra which was completed in 1908. Details: vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/i...
• Brand:
Waygood
• Installed by:
R. Waygood & Co. Ltd.
• Capacity: 29 Persons (originally 24 persons)
• Floors served: Street/Entrance, Top (2 floors)
• Year installed:
1902 (!!)
• History:
- 1902: Installed, originally steam powered
- 1907: Elevators converted into electric driven
- 2002: Declared as a "National Monument" at the time of their 100th anniversary. Almost everything in these elevators have been kept original since they were first installed.

Lisbon is epic, I like Portugal more than Spain. Too bad I didn't have much time to explore the city as I was on a cruise trip (I worked there, which is why I have limited time for exploring for elevators).

The oldest elevator in Indonesia use Waygood too - it should be the national heritage since it is the FIRST elevator in Indonesia. I like how they kept the “Elevador” original without any modernizations/replacements (unlike the Barakka Lift in Malta)

Yeah I agree. It's a shame that not many people knows that "Waygood Lonsum" elevator is in fact the oldest elevator not only in Medan but the whole of Indonesia (so far), and instead claiming the one at Jiwasraya Semarang as the oldest elevator which is incorrect. As for the Barrakka Lift in Malta, the original elevator was dismantled because of lack of patronage and eventually led to financial issues.

Stupidly, one of Indonesian media claims the OTIS at Hotel Indonesia Kempinski as the oldest elevator in Indonesia (installed on 1962, replaced on 2008 (?)).

You mean NYET(dot)TV? Frankly speaking, I laughed when I heard they claim those elevators as the oldest in Indonesia. Only babalus can believe that hunk of baloney, I mean, it's so obvious that those elevators ARE NOT the oldest in Indonesia. I wonder if they have actually realized that what they have claimed is actually wrong.

@@idl3k_elev : I'm done with those medias claiming Jiwasraya and HI have the oldest elevators in Indonesia. They drew a conclusion without further research and led to spreading misconception to all Indonesian citizens. Wow. Btw I heard that there is another old 1918 elevator at Hotel Niagara Malang. Is it true?

@Chris: Ikr? And this is why I hardly trust medias nowadays, except for certain medias Yes it is true. It was made by ASEA from Sweden according to a few blog posts I got on the internet.

The oldest original elevator in Mumbai is Navsari Building. Installed by Stigler in 1903

According to an old Stigler installation references booklet I found on Google, the Taj Palace Hotel in Mumbai once had 6 Stigler elevators. The book also mentions that there were about 75 Stigler units installed in the city at that time.

@@idl3k_elev really? Because Taj Hotels' site told me that the palace wing elevators were made in Germany and Stigler Elevators are usually made in Milan, Italy. If you found the reference booklet, can you pls kindly send me the link to it so i can figure out if it was actually Stigler back when the hotel was built in December 1903? My other suspicion was Schindler or maybe Marryat and Scott.

R. Waygood also made relay-controlled elevators since 1905
@idl3k_elev
@idl3k_elev 4 жыл бұрын
They only made relay-controlled elevators. They never made microcomputer controlled elevators as Waygood merged with OTIS in the 1910s and eventually went defunct in the 1950s (as OTIS completely took over it), and microcomputer elevators didn't exist until around the late 1970s.

A estação Mornington Crescent em Londres costumava ter elevadores que foram instalados em 1907 e substituídos em 1992. Pense nisso, mas no subsolo profundo.

No, as I didn't have much time in Lisbon (I was in a cruise trip and I worked in a cruise ship, so I had very limited time for elevator exploration). Plus, going up to the top where the small viewing point is costs more money.
