For my money, Glen's 2002 live version with the South Dakota Symphony is a better overall performance even if GC doesnt have the same vocal range 27 years later. The guitar playing seems more integrated too. As Chet once said, Glen could play the hell out of an axe. What chops the guy had, both vocally and instrumentally. A formidable set of musical gifts. Hope you enjoy the clearer audio. It's from an audio cassette I personally recorded from my Grandma's TV set back in 76.

I agree with you about the 2001 live performance. However, Glen's voice here is at its best. Thanks very much for uploading. By the way, this year this performance was released on DVD again (Through the Years Live) and the audio was already better than the quite terrible version they released on Glen Campbell and Friends (2007). I've heard Glen do better performances of this. I didn't care much for this arrangement, especially when there was too much noisiness when Glen was doing his magnificent guitar work. Even though I have a few criticisms of this particular performance, I LOVE this man and will NEVER tire of hearing him sing and play the guitar. And because I have my shallow side, I'll also never tire of looking at his delicious good looks. (sigh) If you really want to hear Glen do a killer rendition of this song (and many others), go find his PBS concert in South Dakota. It's outstanding. There's a moment in that performance when your heart rate starts to increase as he pulls his guitar picks from his pocket and selects one for his guitar solo. You know it's going to be awesome because he's Glen Campbell. He doesn't disappoint.
@Cashcrop544 жыл бұрын
I am in full agreement! I love that version of the song. Perfect balance that showed his mastery of both his voice and the fretboard. The crowds reaction shows they agree as well! As for what you said about the picks,I’ve always thought he had some sticky substance like “Pick Honey” to make it less likely he will lose the pick. I use it a lot. He looks like he rubs his thumb and 2 fingers with it. However I could be wrong. I will watch it again to study it closer.

Good guitar work by Glen. Yes, I think this is Glen's best performance of "MacArthur's Park" on YT. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- He had another good one too.... His "Black Suit performance" (Forgot who he did that with...?!) The one with Arthur Fiedler was less formal, and I thought to a degree less successful. Anyway, it is always great to hear Glen's work. A real treat. His performance on TNN was excellent too.
@Squee_Dow6 жыл бұрын
+John G. Lewis Was the "black suit performance" the one for PBS? That's the one I love. Not that I don't like the other ones, but his maturity and life experiences seem to change the way he delivers the lyric. That performance conveyed a certain wisdom that the others lacked. But I'd be thrilled to listen to all of them over and over and over because he's just that good. And then there's the eye candy part of the equation. :)

Thanks for your comments lumdeloo. I wasnt aware of the new Through the Years Live DVD. Will track it down. Actually on the GC and Friends DVD set (2007), the Jimmy Webb episode has the best overall picture and sound of the six shows, except on about the last three tracks, including Macarthur Park, where it descends into serious audio distortion. I agree Glen is in fine voice here.
