It's always so fun and inspiring to look at old products like this. I'mma junky for the hobby's history, and your channel is a goldmine.

The three example chaos mutants at 09:00 actually had miniatures released for them. I've got the one for the weird quadraped, two headed harpy thing.

My first introduction to Warhammer was the Fantasy Roleplay core rulebook. I had the first edition hard cover, with the black & white mohawked dude on the cover. Not sure what ever happened to it, if I sold it, gave it away, but I don't think I still have it.

it really neat to see the genesis of the war hammer world.

The weapons in the Warhammer and Science Fiction article look like they were taken from Laserburn, a sci-fi rules set released in 1980 and written by Bryan Ansell. Quite a lot of the concepts from Laserburn made it into Rouge Trader.

There was also Spacefarers, a 1981 miniatures game published by Citadel that seemed to draw from Laserburn as well.

Always loved the oldschool look of artwork from the 80's, just don't see that sort of stuff anymore.😀

yes you do but with some Indy creators, check out Dark Hollow miniatures, & he's got a KS with a poster running now.

@@calvanoni5443 you won't just see it as with all the soulless computer rendered art, you have to look for it or get tipped of by fine sirs as yourself.

@@UnkaStunka Unfortunately, not only does digitally rendered art encourage a very clean and clinically precise illustrations, the nature of company branding means that few gaming properties want to hire artists whose style can't be easily replicated.

Wild to see so many core 40K weapon types already suggested as sci-fi options. I don’t know if anyone attempted to follow all their suggestions just from the Compendium article; all the weapons would have to be sculpted from scratch and all the figures converted

Wow, that's going way back, before my time even, and I'm normally the "I remember when..." one in any given group. Really interesting to see such early days, thanks for bringing it to light.

@@rutgaurxi7314 If I am, can you finish painting the chaos marine riding a steed of Slaanesh I've been procrastinating about for a month and a half? Thanks in advance.

This is even older than I am=) Seeing this brings back memories of my older brother pouring over these, the artwork especially, then getting mad at me for reading them.

I only have the Second Citadel Compendium, but that's also cool.

They did not have a Realm of Chaos supplement for WH1ed. It did not appear until it was published as RoC Slaves to Darkeness (1988) and The Lost and the Damned (1990).

Great nostalgia. I picked up the second compendium shortly after. Much the same as this item but with the addition of Nick Lund's famous Hobgoblins.

I had that, bought it in Toronto I think, or maybe a simcon at Univ of Rochester.

You seem quite surprised by the use of illustrations for the catalogue of miniatures. That was quite common at the time for figure manufacturers. You can also see it in wargames magazines. It had been the the use since the dawn of commercial figures, because the periodicals where they were published were of fanzine quality. I think that at the time of the compendium, GW could have made usable photos, but the drawings were already available and it was easier to use what was at hand.

Yeah, that was the wait for Realm of Chaos. I left the hobby waiting for it.
