Touring bikes are trendy but lets not forget the most versatile bike of all - the Softail. Perhaps the trap of a huge Harley Davidson touring bike is not for you. Lets have a look at how much fun we can have without spending big on a touring bike.
Ride with me as I test the Harley Davidson Low Rider S and attend the Aussie Vicla's show at Harley Heaven Ringwood.

'24 Softail Heritage Classic - yes it is a compromise, but it is a compromise that works really well for me. Bags and a screen so I don't have to wear a dreaded backpack, and comfortable enough to spend all day on. Small enough that commuting isn't a chore. And yes, I like the classic looks & styling.

Damn good crew there at Harley Heaven Dandy! The lowrider seems like a great bike, I'd love one as second bike or for when I'm going to be in heavy traffic, it seems thinner and easier to filter than my Road King. Great video mate 🤘🤘

My first Harley was a Sportster, but I came from sport bikes. Moved to a Dyna which I still have but it's been in the shop. So I went and got a heritage Softail classic. MDB made me think I wanted a road king. I love all my bikes but I really love the Softail Classic. And I ride them all aggressively.

For me! The big difference between a softail and a touring bike begins at 78-80 mph. Above that speed the touring bike shines, especially on long trips. Bellow that speed Softail is tough to beet. Bad weather, heavy winds the touring bike shines all the time.

I sold my Ultra Limited and bought a new 114 Fatboy in 2018. I don’t miss the weight and having to move that big bike around in my garage. My Fatboy has a stage 2 with a V&H ProPipe and other mods and I enjoy it way more. Once I switched to Metezler CruiseTec tires it is one of the most enjoyable bikes I have ever owned and at 66 I have had a few 😂.

For most of my 60+ years of riding, it was metric cruisers, culminating in the Kawi VN1600 Nomad at around 900 pounds dry. Then, my first Harley - a Road King. All were great for day-tripping with the crew as well as those long touring 600+ mile (1000 K) days on the super-slab. I briefly fell for the lure of a fairing with stereo but never used it and so I traded in the Street Glide for a Softail Deluxe greared-up exactly like a chromed-out Heritage. These are NOT lightweight bikes at nearly 700 pounds dry curb weight, but very nimble and, with my stage two, a blast to ride both locally and on long tours. At 5' 11" I'm the "model" height used to configure stock ergonomics so all my non-performance personalization (seats, bars, foot-boards and grips) have been purely for the esthetics.

I’m 60 years old, 5’9” and about 60kgs wringing wet - currently own a 2000 FXST Softail Standard carby model with a mild cam which I love but have owned a 2007 ElectraGlide Standard as well as a 2017 CVO Street Glide amongst others - all these bikes have their pros and cons but for me at my weight and height, and for the fact that I’m currently battling Cancer, my current Softail is my preferred option - love it! 😎

I listened to the help you give to new riders and seasoned as well. You missed ONE important tip.Cornering leaning looking through the turn ALL great tips. I’m 60 and I’ve been on motorcycles all my life. My first big twin was a 74 inch FX 42 years ago, I ride an FLHX now. I have watched you perform this technique yourself, it is one of the best things to know when navigating a turn. When you lean the bike keep your line of site level with the horizon don’t tilt your head.

Luv the Viclas. Too impractical for me, but the craftsmanship is often astounding. I bought a Heritage as the Road King is just a bit tall and top heavy to cart the wife around on. It's a nice bike and has a couple attributes aside from lower, lesser weight that I like. The single disc front brake is actually considerably stronger than the dual brakes on my Road King. The rear shock is also far better stock than the Road King shocks. That's pretty much where it ends. I think the RK is more comfortable, far less vibey, has way better luggage, and 20% more fuel capacity, and handles better. For touring I take the RK every time. For taking the wife out to an eatery in the countryside, the Heritage is about perfect. People may argue the handling thing. To a lot of reviewers, going down the road at 20 mph and shaking the head back and forth while commenting on "flickability" is the be all, end all of handling. To me, they are silly newbs. The Heritage actually handles better if that is one's metric of such things. The problem with it is the steering is too light and flighty. Where I can take the RK and throw it into a corner shredding floorboards and it feels as stable bullet train, the Heritage will want to divert from the path with every little road imperfection. I really have to consciously be overly delicate with the steering inputs. Good for my form I suppose, but I prefer a bike just rail around the corners w/o me thinking much about it. In short, HD cruisers are nice, but HD tourers are fantastic. Be even more fantastic with better front brakes and better rear shocks.

Three years ago I traded in my ElectricGlide for a Softail Slim and I've not had one regret. Fast, nimble, low center of gravity and 200+ pounds lighter than the ElectricGlide, slow speed maneuvers through traffic or back streets are a breeze. At 6'1 even when not using the highway pegs I have plenty of room to stretch out my legs. I do miss the stereo and cruise control though. With a sissy bar, strapping on a backpack makes up for lack of touring luggage. at 67 years of age, I still don't require all the creature comforts a bagger offers, because I'm Old not Dead!

I've had 2 big bikes, Voyager and Ultra SE110, both don't like big fairing and neither had the comfort, but back when Kawasaki made the 1500(1600 might be good too) they had stretched out tank, sitting you back so your legs are stretched a wee bit and they had the comfort and I'm only 5'10.5" My big bike now is 96ci WideGlide, for my long distance a Kawasaki Versus 1000 w/Corbin seat(stock seat sucks) and highway pegs, but found after seat change don't need highway pegs I live in the hills, so just for fun Vrod XR and 1200iron(latest to the stable) Since I don't have much money(probably from buying bikes) I am slowly turning WG into long distance bike..,.after 5hrs on Versys I'm ready for another 5........never been 5hrs on WG but after 3 I'm still good....HD Signature seat with backrest

If I want to go on a weekend trip I slap the bags on, the tour pak and the windshield and there is my touring bike. Otherwise everything goes off and it’s a great bike for around town.
