You made a very good point Freddie - owning a dream bike is not just riding it - it's also the feeling of happiness when you just think about it parked up in the garage. Might sound strange for other people but that's how it is for us. Great upload 😀

I remember when I bought my 1980 Jeep Cherokee Chief (in 1992). All through work, I would think about it parked in the lot. A couple of times a night (I worked overnights at a hospital), I’d go down for a smoke break & I’d just look at it for 5 or 10 minutes, so I know that feeling quite well.

I just rode my 2023 Obese Robert about 350 miles in two days and it was phenomenal. For long trips I throw on a 19” windshield, some Thrashin supply saddle bags, and a waterproof duffel. About to put on some 3” risers to add some comfort. The bike is light and keeps up with Street and Road Glides all day long. After a long trip I strip it back down to its street brawler looks for the daily commute and local rides.

Last July found a bottle of Powers Irish whiskey for my cousin's 89 year old Irish neighbor. I was in the East Bay Area, my cousin was in the suburbs of Vancouver, BC. Ergonomically the only changes was 3 inches of rise in the bars, motobars, Memphis shades fairing with their lowest screen (the others cause my head to bob around too much) and a Mustang seat. Left at 12:30 on the Friday got there 6:30pm (920 miles) the Saturday. It was an AWESOME ride. I am so happy with my Fatbob. I have other bikes but it's the one I always seem to swing a leg over. Can't recommend it highly enough (or I-5 in the Northern end of California with its lovely sweepers). Great fun. I so want to do it again

The most under appreciated bike from Harley. The off roading capabilities of this cruiser bike is unmatched from any other cruisers in the market. It has enough power and torque that rivals a dirt bike and adventure bike and also the fact that the bike geometry is perfect for trail riding has not been explored as much as it deserves to. Why I mentioned this is because in the Philippines that Fatbob is actually an off-roading cruiser choice of some motorcycle clubs here in my country where they ride uphill and through mountain terrain with the rest of adventure bikers and the Fatbob keeps pace is unmatched.

With basically no motorcycle riding experience (except for owning a Yamaha Xmax Scooter) I rented this beast last year in California and did 2.600 miles in two weeks. Took me through the hurricane when it lightly hit Yellowstone, to Vegas the Grand Canyon and many more incredibly beautiful places. Had the best time and we grew into one during that trip. The power of the engine was such a visceral experience. Yes, sometimes a windshield would have been nice and if my buddy didn't have panniers on his Harley, it would have been a real problem. After that trip I had to get a real motorcycle but the Fat Bob wasn't ment for my commute trough city traffic. I finally landed on a Moto Guzzi V7 850 Special - of all the bikes I tested, the sound and rumble reminded me of the Fat Bob most. Very happy with my purchase so far. Ride on!

Yeah, the price. Eye wateringly expensive here in NZ, but as you say, the resale hasn’t kept as high as others. But then like the vrod, nightrod, fatbob actually make more sense to buy second hand. But really, as you also say, the sportglide is just more practical. So if I only had one bike, it would be the sportglide. If I won the lottery, I’d have the fatbob too 8) right alongside my Indian scout 101 in the imaginary garage.

Great video Freddie. I took one out for a test ride and kinda liked it, but I'd just stepped off my Multistrada on the journey to the garage - and losing pretty much all of the luxuries of the multi was too much of a juxtaposition. I've since bought a Sportster Forty Eight and get the same feeling you do about Obese Robert. The engine, the torque, the sound, the way it makes you feel. A fantastic video Freddie... It's all about the big smile a Harley will put on your face every time you go out for a ride which most riders will never understand. Yes, I've owned many other bikes from Triumph, Royal Enfield and the Japanese big 3 but they can never put the smile on my face as my Harley's. As a matter of fact, I still have all 4 of my Harley's dated all the way back to the EVO's and recently with the M8 motor and the newest platform the Sportster S and Nightster which are a blast just by themselves. But if you like the traditional potato sound then the M8 is the way to go... my EVO just turned 144K and it still runs like a top.

I ridden a few late model Fat Bobs and they are the best handling motorcycle in the HD range. Great lean angle and the 114ci is smooth with tons of torque. Two negatives are the all-terrain tyres are horrible and they should have gone for twin Led headlights like the Rocket which would have been similar to previous models.

American here, have a '17 Dyna Fat Bob, and to be honest it (and the Softail version) seem to be far more popular in Europe then they have been in the US since it's inception; it's a bike that doesn't seem to have a place in HD's line up, especially with the Low Rider S taking the performance mantle... I'm surprised it has taken them this long to cancel it.... having said that, living 5 miles up a dead end dirt road, coming from a dual sport/adv bike background here in Vermont, I love mine. Then again, I'm not a "Harley" guy. Thanks for the video.

Owned the sport glide and loved it. Wish it had dual front discs like the Fat Bob. Road a modified 117 Fat Bob for a week Great bike In USA both bikes discontinued. What is Harley thinking ? Now I have to look at the Indian Scout 101 as a non bagger to get that authentic cruiser feel

Plain and simple. It's got a face only a mother could love. Would be better suited with mid foot controls over the forward position. While the "bobbed" rear fender may look good it's trash for group riding as many harley riders do. It spits gravel straight back into the rider behind rather than down. Personally not a fan of the fat front tire, just added rotational mass.

The 1979 FXE-F Fatbob was so called because of the fat dual tanks and bobbed rear fender. The front wheel was a standard skinny one and the bobbed rear was what today is considered a fill fender. Oh and the most modern forward thinking model would be the Low Rider ST.

Just no... Most modern Harley are the current CVO models for cruisers and the truly incredebly modern version of a Harley is the Pan America.
@crewgadjy

@@stuartstogdill2406 talking about the classic air cooled cruiser models, otherwise tes the Pan America is the most modern model. As for the CVO, there just tarted up turner's, HD's been doing them for years. Whereas as the St and to a lesser extent the S Model Tourers introduce power and suspension to the mix.

£19k plus interest over three years you’re looking at close to £25k for something you’re only going to use a couple months a year.

If not willing to ride through the winter in this country, should you really have a bike? Price is still excessive even for daily use.

@@bearwolffish I never get the 'a bike should be ridden all weathers, all the year round', as in my mind it is miserable riding in the wind, rain and cold, so why do it. Yes, a bike worth £19k doing limited millage might seem excessive but whether you do 2k a year or 10k, you have shelled out that money regardless, so what does it matter about how many miles you do.

I enjoyed your description of the emotional appeal of a bike such as the Fat Bob. I sold my 2021 Heritage Softail (With the 107 inch Milwaukee Eight motor) which I'd owned for a couple of years because I'd simply done what I wanted to with it. Every ride is an occasion on a bike such as that but I figured that I could get the same visceral appeal and sensation from other, less expensive machines. Plus I don't like the fact that H-D seems to be spiralling downwards into becoming a boutique brand with a severely limited appeal.

I'll tellya why: There's no passenger pillion to speak of, the headlight looks like Bender's eye. it weighs almost 700lbs, and only has 93 hp for a bike with a 1900cc displacement. The front tyre is yooge! I've heard it described as "the bike with two back tyres". At $17,000us it's not really priced to sell, especially with so much competition out there. It's definitely a niche bike for one-up riding.

I talked with a dealer the other day. Asked about the Fat Bob. He claims that Harley sees the FB and the Sportster S as being too similar. They axed the FB, the one with lineage and a decent following for the new kid in town. Very interesting.

You make a good point Freddie about how what I call forced modern looks age badly and can even fail when new in my opinion. Take the humble MG Metro from the early 80's. It sold very well with its traditional badging, honouring the integrity of the MG brand. The simple octagon badge on the grill and sides worked. During the late 80's they decided to 'pop art' the badging, with half octagon MG badges printed seemingly at random across the sides of the car. The integrity of the brand was lost and the MG brand was dropped from the Metro range. Royal Enfield have done the same thing with the Hunter 350, using 'pop art' with their Royal Enfield name on the bike's tank. A bad move in my opinion but at least it is only with the one model but it is 'talking down' to your buyer. Will these companies ever learn...

I test rode one of these a week or so ago. My only complaint, which is easily remedied, is the super quiet exhaust. I loved everything about it. Then I got back on my paid off, well modified 2021 Sportster Forty-Eight… Full Stage One, Legend Revo rear shocks, weighing in at about 550 pounds. I really wanted to want the Fat Bob 114 enough to trade my Forty-Eight for it, but I just couldn’t do it… All that said, Harley screwed up badly discontinuing this bike in the US. IMO, it’s an awesome bike!

Great series on the Fat Bob, I agree it won't age well, nor will the Sportster S. I took the Fat Bob for a test ride, loved it, but I needed to give it a more retro feel, so I specified short shot exhausts and a number plate relocation. The price was very tempting and the part exchange offer on my air cooled Sportster was good, but my wife said it will never be a classic Harley in the way that a Sportster is. So I kept the Sportster

I have ridden a Harley a few times. I am a fan but have always ridden large (fast) Hondas. Harley in the US is NOT known for its quality although I agree that has changed. I now ride a Bonnie 1200. . .I DO wish it sounded a bit more like a Harley, but I do love its sound, it is lighter, more comfortable, and a lot cheaper. . .
