I've been riding Harleys since the mid sixties. Of all the bikes I've owned, the Evos were the lowest maintenance. Never got stranded by an Evo. Shovelheads on the other hand have left me on the side of the road more than once. I have a couple of Twin Cam bikes now that I ride most of the time. Although, I do still ride my Shovel from time to time. It is so much fun to ride. I'm in my 70s now and don't tell my wife but it tends to beat me up pretty bad these days.

Best Buy, a 10yr old Harley bought by a man who appreciates the machine but couldn’t find the time or the courage to ride it. Bought a 2013 Fatboy 103ci for $9,000 CAD. Oil changed every year, 4,500km on it. You’d be surprised how many 8-12yr old bikes are out there with nearly no miles on it.

I just recently bought a 1982 FLT shovelhead to add to my stable. It's been lowered, fat spoke 19" front wheel, later model saddle bags, 16" ape hangers, no fairing, and straight pipe fishtail dual exhaust and a custom dark green metal flake paint job. It does have a small primary leak, just a few drops almost unnoticeable. (I will fix this winter) Runs and it rides and sounds great all for $3,000 USD. There's many great deals to be found if you take your time and search. To me, a new Harley-Davidson is an EVO. Anything built afterward really doesn't interest me I'm 61 years old and kind of set in my ways. I still own my first big twin harley, a 1978 flh bobber/chopper I have a 1991 springer softtail and a 1992 electra glide ultra classic.

The average person knows you are on a Harley, but most have no idea if you are on an M8, a twin cam. An Evo, or a shovel. So save yourself some money and get a cheap twin cam while you still can.

Older is best and better - 4 speed, choke n carb, rigid frame, chain drive, not a fan of "efi" or belt drive.... my 1989 air cooled evo does have electric ignition rather than kick but has no other "tech"...no need for trickle feed to battery once I turn it off, it is off. No fob just a key, no alarm...just me & my eyes...and my axe....

Old school Harleys look really cool - they're a bit small for big guys (but configure yours to fit you). However, expect to spend a lot of time having them fixed - air-aspirated Harleys require much more maintenance. They sound way better though.
@Mikeysixkiller

Not true. And evo is as simple and reliable as it gets. And with less components, it's simpler than an M8
@Shadrach666
@Shadrach666 5 күн бұрын
@@Mikeysixkiller I didn't say they were complicated Mikey, just that they require more maintenance or tinkering to keep them running sweet. It's to do with wear and tear - all bike components wear out at different rates - on a 50 year old chopper you can expect each ride to be interesting - but it's mechanical and no electronics to go wrong. I was talking about the whole bike, not just the engine.It's what makes biking fun imo. I love Evo's, and Twin-cams for longer rides.

I am 83 years old and ride a 99 Softail Custom. Carb, air cooled, and simple. I started riding on a 42 Flat head 45 when I was 14, in 1955. That thing was tuff as nails. Actually, I started riding on a friends Whizzer motor bike when I was 8. My EVO powered Softail Custom is now 25 years old, but when I wash it, maybe twice a year, it looks as good as new. I do keep it garaged. I only have 67,000 on it though, and it has been trouble free for the most part. I changed out the inner cam brg, for peace of mind. Installed a Torrington full roller bearing. Other than that and general maintenance, I had one stator go bad. I love the simplicity of the EVO. I have no use for a radio. I just listen to the music of the drag pipes and watch the sun reflect off the head light. It is almost as comfortable as sitting in my Lazy Boy recliner with the pillow seat and pull back buck horn bars. IF I want to ride 75 or 80 down the interstate it will do just fine. But most of my riding is around the back roads where I live. I rode an Iron Head Sportster for 23 years and loved it also. The new computerized fuel injected bikes with a key fob like my Chevy makes no sense to me. Just my opinion. Everyone has one.

Still riding an ‘07 FXLR that I paid $3500 for. It was a 1 owner dealer maintained Bike with 15K on the clock. I’ve replaced the wear items like engine isolater mounts and opened up intake and exhaust. I’ve owned everything in my 50+ years of riding and there’s just nothing like the feeling of perpetual motion that H-D’s impart. I also own a ‘21 Tenere as a SHTF and wheelie Bike.

I have a 98’ EVO here, my brother’s bike, he owned it since buying it new in 1998. I owned a 2019 Road King Special with 114 and after a few years I didn’t care for all the electronics that Harley’s RD put into the bike…It was ultra finicky when it came to changing and upgrading anything electrical. The charge light would constantly come on and off when I was driving it. I sold it and bought my brother’s Heritage Springer with an EVO. It’s a simple bike, uses 3 quarts of oil and one in the transmission versus my M8 which used 4 quarts and I quart in the other two holes, transfer case and primary. The older bike uses a carburetor with a manual choke, something which I am use to and it operates like my snow blower and yard tractor…Just turn on the peacock vale to get gas, then a couple turns on the throttle, pull out the choke and hit the engine start. Make no mistake the reason my brother had this bike for so long was he took care of it and always warmed up the engine before he drove off… I don’t miss the Milwaukee 8 at all…The EVO is what a Harley is meant to sound like, they aren’t super fast but it’s about the ride not the destination

The sound of the older bikes is freakin awesome. My Dad bought a 1998 Dyna wide glide brand new for 18k USD and i remember he had to wait a few months for it. I think he sold it several years later for 18k. The newer ones definitely don't hold their value like that anymore, but i did pull the trigger on my first Harley a week and a half ago. Got a brand new 24 Heritage Softail with the 114. Awesome bike! Can't wait to get some better pipes on it.

New bikes have 3 ssues. One, over priced. Two, the M8 is basically what big cc Japanese cruisers were in the 90s and early 2000s. Harley is 20 years behind. Three, technology that can and will fail or harley will stop issuing updates for. Pros, power. Haha. Anyway I won't own anything newer than an evo. And in the states I can own 8 of them for the price of a new harley.

I have a dyna Fat Bob (modified) and a BMW R1200RT. The beemer is a mile muncher with superb manners, luggage capacity and weather protection. However, if I'm going to France or Spain touring I always go on the dyna. Its more fun, I like the sound of it, the vibration and the looks it gets when its parked up and from people in cars as I fly past them. They let down their windows to listen to the boom of the Harley but barely notice when the beemer slides past them. Its all subjective and for me when I open my garage door I still feel like that little eight year kid seeing a Harley for the first time parked up outside a cafe in France. Its so evocative and makes me feel alive. Viva Harley!

Be patient. Hope the brand doesn’t decline too much. Older bikes are the way to go, don’t know how far back, but get a Harley. Support your local bike shops.

@@Spike_6280 good call on supporting your local. Definitely a cause to get behind. As far as bikes go? I’m way too emotionally attached to my Harley. It’s honestly the best and funniest ride I’ve ever had.

@OldNotDead-Club I had a highly modified Softail for 27 years, but it was a Softail, handled like a sack of potatoes (compared to my BMW S1000XR). Lots of hp, big cam, heads polished ported and flow benched. But it was always breaking down. I'm 66 now, and I want reliability, power, braking, and handling. Which is why I bought an XR. But I still ride my Electra Glide about 1/3 of the time.

@@OldNotDead-Club My dream bike used to be a CVO, but now it's the BMW M1000XR (205hp). Have you ridden a BMW lately? Not a GS, one with power, like my S1000XR?

I was hoping you would include in your comparisons the next generation, the Livewires, not just old petrol bikes.
