Beautiful. The narrator, Peter Vere-Jones was a famous English born New Zealand actor who immigrated to New Zealand with his family in 1949 aged 9 years. He was well known on stage, on radio, TV and in movies, including Xena-Princess Warrior and Peter Jackson's Brain Dead, Meet The Feebles and The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug. I first visited Nepal in 1982 a year after this video was made. I've visited many times since then and plan to return in a few months time. Jai Nepal.

Highly recommended show on mesmerising nostalgic Kathmandu valley, the show touches my soul, well the imaginations of our past is, ironically, also built upon foreign accounts that reduce Nepal to exoticism. Nepal was a place of "lost kingdoms", a “last Hindu kingdom,” a fascinating “hippies trail,” a Shangrila for those who sought it-a place where one could return to their "roots,” visual narratives emphasise a pastoral dream, with rice fields as far as the eye could stretch, or mountain-villages untouched by the corruption of modern industrial and consumer practices. With every passing year, one begins to rue what once was. There is wide consensus that Kathmandu Valley-and its cities-were in a better shape in the past. Pictures of a bucolic past, with green fields, temples, clean rivers and emptier roads flood social media on a daily basis. Such nostalgia extends to other places from "untouched" trekking trails and regions and ideas of governance and politics, it is no longer uncommon to hear a nostalgic ode to royal rule visa vis the current political state of the country. Thanks for this glorious Nepal.

Very well put and articulated.. My grandfather also appears in 10:51 at pashupatinath.. went there for 60 years each day, died October 4 2010 aged 89.. Kathmandu looks so pristine.. sadly most of it is corrupted and lost now.. mostly due to politics 😢

@NewZman232 жыл бұрын
@@aa6eheia156 Yes, the people were at last getting their voices and opinions heard. They were sick of years and years of being used and abused by the corrupt political system. The student movement was followed by the people's movement and then the 10 year Maoist revolution during which families were torn apart and tens of thousands died and ultimately resulted in abolishing the monarchy, the introduction of Democracy and the declaration of the Republic of Nepal in 2008 CE.

Thanks, Peter Sir for such a tranquil, clear rendition. KTM 🎉and Nepal look like Bhutan of 2023. SO, Magical and untouched with the faint touches of medieval history still remnant. In today' Nepal, people are smitten by western culture which is strange as the Nepali culture is very amazing ❤ in itself. The people were so simple, amazing and hardworking as evident😢 during this documentary. Listen, carefully, you can hear local dialects and sounds of Nature. 😊 Such a beautiful, enchanting memory of a proud Hindu rashtra well governed by King in those days. Sincerely, such a great documentary!!!!!!!

If it was from 1981 AD, then this video is not showing the city areas. I was not born that time but by 1995, I remember seeing lots of concrete buildings. But there were still open spaces and not such tall buildings around Durban squares or even around New road and not many private vehicles on the road. I noticed the river water slowly changing the colour into grey. Buildings spreading throughout the agricultural land without any urban planning in order. The government had chance to think of urban planning which they didn’t. Looks like political parties were fighting with kings for a rights to ruin the country. When they got it they ruin the country.

Now i believe my parents they said temples were quite reasonable distance away from each other if u wanted to worship them u needed to walk a long distance and even after travelling u needed to wait inline to worship the gods and now everywhere u go there's atleast 2-4 pictures of atleast 1 god or a small temple like structure that u can pray to as a reminder, to ensure the safety of ur travel, to be blessed and worship them ....

Nepal as a whole is a different story but the kathmandu valley (bhaktapur,lalitpur,and kantipur which is the older name of kathmandu) were inhabited by the newars their culture and artistic examples are most common in these districts . but other than that places like kritipur , panauti ,etc also have newari history .

Most of the things said in this video is False information ,it’s unacceptable,,, Nepal is very old country one of the oldest country of Asia its underdeveloped but older then America and many other countries Gautama budhha is just few hundreds years older but Nepal Kathmandu is thousands of years older then gautam buddha but Nepal was there even before the formation unification of India and got its name Bharat,,, limbu Gurung comes under Kirata kirat is not tribe,it’s not only Religion ,empire or civilisation it’s all,its just lost in time,due to intruders betrayal by outsiders and wars other religion betrayed destroyed all Kirati existence ,There are More then 30 tribes that comes under KIRAT, it has very rich history and it’s very old AND kirat are the ones who begin the civilised societies not only Valley according to Ancient scripture they lived ,build societies socialism all the Himalayan and Mountains they are all Kirati & Kirati empire kingdom,, Kirati and Nepal placeses are mentioned even in Hindu holy scripture like Mahabharat Ramayana and in many more so this video information are wrong poorly researched this is wrong…
