Automatic 400 4bbl rated at 325 hp. Very close.

Question to ask on this 400 are the main bearing saddles sunk further into the block meaning that the main bearing caps do not protrude out above the engine block walls like they do on the 455

No, it's the exact same block

What year 400 is this 67 or earlier or 68 and up

I think he said it a 68 Olds 400 engine. Going into a 68 Olds 442.

It's odd that anyone would choose to build either version of the Oldsmobile 400's. Neither one was all that good, and the small bore long stroke version was downright a terrible engine.

It wasn’t a bad motor. Especially in W30 guise. 328 camshaft and 474 lift 108 overlap. They did what they could back then. So it’s under square, not ideal but. It bad.

The early 400 was an excellent engine. They had good power and received well. 1965-67 Olds Cutlass and 4-4-2s done well at the drags back in the day.

@@basilcarroll9729 I built an early one at 4.03x3.975 400 to run in C/S in a 66442 and it made 510 hp and 478 lbs ft. My 390 FE at 4.09x3.79 400 ci for a C/S car made 535hp and 540 tq. My 410 with stock legal every thing Made 560 hp and 570 tq, but I got torn down and they weren’t amused by my 5/16 intake guides and 2.097 /1.55 intake in the Parklane, the late 400 Olds sucked, it had a 3.875 bore and 4.25 stroke. In an F-85 it only made 466 hp and 515 ft lbs. I think it ran F in a 68. I’d pound on the steering wheel!lol. I think this one was a late 400. That said I d like to build a 4.125 x4.25 FE , my heads and 2x4 intake are perfect for it, as is my roller cam, 245@.050 .600 solid.
