About 40 years ago, William bought 1.25 acres for $6000 on the Big Island of Hawaii and began growing his own food and building his own shelters. He was inspired to leave his native Wisconsin for a place where it would be easier to live off the land.
Today he lives with only solar power (with an array built from recycled panels), without a car (he uses an electric trike or carpools), without a job (except for rent from his self-built shelters) and he grows much of his own food, including coconuts, mangos, citrus, macadamia nuts, pumpkins and a huge vegetable garden.
He has built a dozen structures on his property, using recycled materials and spending next to nothing to build by hand. His wooden main house is half greenhouse with windows of an ocean view that he built for $500 to $1000. Most of his shelters are topped with green roofs, including a 2-story stone yurt with a lush green roof, an underground music studio lined with local rock and topped with vegetation, a bamboo quonset hut, and two green-roofed converted truck homes.
"Nature does a pretty good job," explains William. "These living roofs... you know, I wanted everything like that, 'cause it makes everything invisible, and blended with it."
The impetus to begin this project, which he had hoped to turn into an eco-village and invite others to join him, was inspired by the book "Survival in the 21st Century" by Viktoras Kulvinskas (1976) and thinkers like Buckminster Fuller (William has a geodesic dome sweat lodge.

I tried passing down the knowledge my parents had but all the kids under my care arent particularly interested. /shrug its a shame... because once these folk are gone the ideal is likely ro die with them.

I really like the videos where you highlight a much more "every person could do this" dwelling/compound. A lot of your videos are higher end builds, and most of humanity is poor. Much more practical and helpful, instead of oh, you know... just be rich and you can do this. Love the philosophies William embodies.

Definitely only a couple of videos in here that fit that definition. The worst one is titled something like Mirror House in Arizona. The people were awful, self promoting to a point of satire and overall oblivious to anything that didn't include their own headline . You can get a feel for when Kirsten and her husband truly enjoy their subject content, and I believe they did here.

On ideas from a survival book, he moved to Hawaii to put his plan into action, to live sustainably off grid, build several dwellings while growing most of his own food. If you ask me, moving to a tropical paradise away from those Wisconsin winters is a no brainer. He lived there in Hawaii for four years before he found and bought that property at what seems to be a fantastic deal. And I've never seen a mango tree before. Also, it appears that his solar panels are not getting full direct sunlight. Thanks for the tour and until the next one !!

@signalfire6 20 күн бұрын
Mortite is sold on Amazon and in hardware stores. It's just a sticky rubbery caulking; it appears he stuck the cut to shape colored glass onto a full sheet of clear glass. Many of his round 'windows' were old microwave turntables (I've got several here I hated to throw away). The weird thing about Hawaii is when people move off the island, they just leave everything behind. Garage sales galore. Land is still cheap in many places but coqui are ubiquitous in his area - they are tiny frogs that are BIG LOUD. Looks like he's got the land sealed off from most of the wild pig problems, though.

@@signalfire6 Yes I can relate, I’ve lived on St Croix USVI for 24 years, wish we would get the rain that they get there 😕 and our Puerto Rican coquís would like it too! As for the glass windows, I guess my question is how are the pieces adhered to the plate? Seems that wimpy weather stripping wouldn’t be able to hold.

Keep the buildings under the SF they call a shed there…. Here it is 160 SF, no permit required. Under 500SF, easy permit. That is why they are all small. They are also grandfathered in at some point…. He has been there for a while. With the green roofs, the City Assholes can’t see the structures on Google Earth. You better believe every government reviews their county 100 percent on google earth… every time😊 it is updated…. At a minimum. With an island that small it takes what… a day tops.

@@Qwiv You are right on some points and of course I agree with you, but unless it's zoned as Agriculture land the largest structure you can build without a permit is 100sf..... plus what I said in the earlier reply is accurate as of April 2024..... I have lived on the Big Island on and off for 40 years....... It's quite a Large Island, slightly bigger than the State of Connecticut. To drive all the way around it takes about 7 and a half hours, at a average speed of 50mph...... Google Earth does not really show accurate grid data for real estate. Zillow, Redfin, Realtor, and Rocket Homes all use Canadian Military satellites for their upgraded topo and grid data, highly accurate and always updated about every 4 hours..... Google supplies the street view feature, but sadly it's the neighbors that Narc out the other neighbors, of their is a beef regarding property line encroachment, animals, dogs, chickens, someone jealous etc.... it gets bad..... society is a mess, in a perfect World this awesome Man would be Grandfathered in, but South Point is Hawaiian Heritage lands and they probably consider him squatting, Hawaiian Lands are lease holds usually 99 year leases, many are coming up...... I wish things were productive, helpful, and realistic. Sadly in 2024, this is reality. 🕊️

So many people are going to homes like this now, and it's great to see how many materials are getting recycled, and people are downsizing to just what they need. It's great to see people that can live without 6 bedrooms and 5 bedrooms, like family homes being built now. These are the people who will know how to live when things get hard. These people who are living off the grid will know how to survive. Will these be the people who help us get through the global climate problem?
