Couldn't he just claim that shooting Eddy White was done in self defense? Eddy was clearly just as unhinged if not more so than our lead protagonist and he was getting hostile.

Yeah but he has used Ms Brown's gun to kill Eddie which he took it from her room when he assumed she was dead. Now the prosecutor would build up a case by arguing that Lou visited Ms. Brown and stole her gun to kill Eddie. Why else would he carry someone else's gun instead of his own for self defense.
