VW 1641cc engine stand start

We have a runner! With a little time and the help of some friends Nathan got everything he needed to assemble the motor for his oval! Chris and I went out after most of the hard work was done to help with the starting on the "engine stand". A little adjusting, a little persuading, and 3 starters later, we have a runner!

Yeah, it came from a friend of mine and "ran when pulled" so we weren't too worried. It'll be nice to see Nathan driving it again for sure

what parts did you use to build your 1641 please. I just got a 1600 in a 1970 beetle and i just want to do a few engine upgrades like you did.

I'm not sure what the specs of this engine were. If you want to upgrade your motor without taking it apart (bolt on mods) you can do so easily. A set of dual carbs would make a huge difference. I like the Kadrons, but the weber ICTs are also great. You'll also need an exhaust with higher flow. There's a performance exhaust to fit almost any budget and style. A good header and a quiet pack muffler is the most common and a fairly affordable option. A higher output ignition system would complement the other two nicely. A pertronix or MSD distributer/coil/wire kit is a good choice and an easy install. Beyond that you'd have to open the engine and swap a cam or machine everything for larger pistons. High performance comes with a cost, you may lose reliability and require more maintenance over time. A 1600cc with the above bolt on mods is a good blend of mild performance and a reliable motor. Like your exhaust setup,I keep thinking about the 1641 set up for my bug currently run a 1500 single port but thinking either 1600 or 1641 up grade, keep hearing 1641 has thin wall and suffer from over heating but I also have a remote oil filter and a oil cooler set up inside passenger compartment where back seat would be ... Extra oil capacity with fans ,but mine has been removed due to its a off-road toy that I'm caging...1600 is legal for class 11 but I will have multiple motors for different games....my 1959 has stock swingarm but I have a 1967 bus IRS rear complete and also a 1974 bug I can acquire with IRS ...I'm planning on installing....not sure yet which one...you have heat issues!

Hey Redd this is the reply I got from a very reputable VW engine rebuilder in the UK. "Many years ago, people became concerned over the cylinder walls and to be honest most of those issues were very possibly problems that would have occurred anyway. It’s very easy to get an installation wrong, or drive a vehicle too hard, wait for the engine to overheat and then blame the cylinder walls. In reality with most recon 1641 engines supplied by a reputable engine manufacturer, the piston and liners used now are so far within tolerance and you should have no results of overheating." But I guess it depends on where you get it from.

This is an EMPI serpentine kit. I believe you can order them from carcraftstore.com. CB performance and MST also make beautiful kits.

Extra pulley? He has an Empi serpentine belt kit on there. The 3rd pulley is the tensioner.
