There is no need for boycotts, no need for confrontation, no need for petitions. All that is required are a few courageous band members, including alumni band members, Ole Miss supporters who can play an instrument, and any other musician with a backbone to gather together, and play "Dixie" on or adjacent to campus. Do it either well-planned in advance, or as a "flash mob band", but do it right and do it often and do it with pride.

I'm a northerner, but now live in ATL. I am against racism and all hateful behavior. However, I think it is absolutely crazy that Ole Miss cannot play this march in public anymore. The song is not racist, it was written BEFORE the Civil War. The problem is that liberals tell everyone that a song, a picture, a word, etc.....is equivalent to racism. It's just absurd. At the University of North Dakota, we had to give up our Mascot (Fighting Sioux) even though both Indian reservations voted 75% to 25% to keep the name with the school. It is just crazy how so few people can cause so much grief for the majority. I love Dixie, it has always been one of my favorites. Keep playing it Ole Miss.......

And no they actually do not chant "The south will rise again" anymore. They have even started playing Dixie again. The students that did chant that weren't even from Mississippi. They were form Georgia and were kicked out of school for it. Ole Miss is a place of learning and equality. When I heard this song every night when it was the closing song of the radio stations, race did not occur to me. I am so sorry it makes so many so angry. Southerners have to put up with many things we don't care for either, but we do it gracefully. To the one who commented about Old South archive: Are there many Southern archives left? It seems to me that many would like to erase the Old South completely. This use to be a free country with freedom of speech. Sorry we are losing that. I certainly feel we are censored constantly in many areas. I don't like it one bit.

{With the fall of Petersburg and Richmond, and Lee’s surrender to Grant at Appomattox, Washington was consumed by celebration. On the evening of April 10, 1865, a crowd of some 3,000 people gathered outside the White House, hoping for some rousing words from their president. In response to their cries of “Speech!” Lincoln demurred, saying he would deliver an address the following evening, after he had adequate time to prepare. As consolation, he issued a special request for the Marine band. “I have always thought ‘Dixie’ one of the best tunes I have ever heard. Our adversaries over the way attempted to appropriate it, but I insisted yesterday that we fairly captured it.” As the crowd laughed and cheered, Lincoln added, “It is good to show the rebels that with us they will be free to hear it again.” }
