Half of the increase is due to inflation and the other half is opportunism. I am Turkish by the way.
@inkenhafner7187
@inkenhafner7187 2 ай бұрын
And the opportunism is completely understandable if your wages brings less and less to the table at home. For most tourists cheap prices for food or clothes are "nice to have" and we're talking about a few days. Most of them can afford it easily and paying a bit more and last but not least tipping generously helps the people who have to deal with the problem every day with low wages.

In Alanya the prices in restaurants doubled to quadrupled compared to last year. For example a big portion of Döner in the shopping mall ALANYUM cost around 6 Euros last year, which was as expensive as a big Döner in Berlin at that time but the portion in Berlin is still double as big as in Alanya and the quality of the Döner there is way better than in any Döner place in Alanya. This year around 5 months ago it was already almost 20 Euros for one big Döner which is absolutely a ripp off price. A few days ago I passed by a Chinese restaurant which served my friends fried Börek for spring rolls a few months ago. I saw the menu outside and they charge for 2 pieces of Sushi 345 to 355 TL!! You would need to order at least 7 of them to fill your stomach, that would sum up to 7 x 345 = 2415 TL (64 Euros) for one person without drinks and tip. In Zurich Switzerland you can get right now 6 pieces of Sushi for 12 Swiss Francs. So for eating out in Alanya, many places now charge more than one of the most expensive cities in the world. My favorite pizza cost 5 Euros last year and this year 15 Euros. Last year the most expensive pizza there was around 7 Euros and this year 15-18 Euros. I have been living in Turkey since 2.5 years and I can tell you that this is not inflation but pure greediness of the people here. Many foreigners who had come to Turkey every year since 20-30 years told me that this year was definitely the last time for them. One woman even said she does not feel ripped off but rather like being robbed. Some people were in Spain and Turkey this year and said that Spain is way cheaper than Turkey and one person said that for the price of 1 week holiday in Turkey this year he could spend 3 weeks holiday in a nice country in Europe instead with much better service than in Turkey. Foreigners with Ikamet do not get the museum card anymore, so they permanently live here, Some have local jobs with a local salary, some live from their savings and can pay touristy prices all year round now. Also water and electricity prices went up for foreigners around 6 times, which is much higher than the prices for the locals, but this applies for foreigners who own a property here but do not have Ikamet (residency). Most foreigners already left Alanya. Everybody wants to sell their homes here and leave as fast as they can.

I just came back from Istanbul a few weeks ago. While I loved it, it certainly wasn’t cheap for food, unless you went to where the locals were. However, as someone from the US, anywhere else, I was quoted prices that would raise my eyebrow in the states…there was definitely a feeling of being hustled quite a bit. However, outside of Istanbul, I met many many humble and honest people 🥰

nowadays everywhere is very expensive, even local areas.. even poor areas.. quality and service dropped a lot and prices hiked a lot. A Total dramatic change in Turkey, quite a bit decline. I am from there.. I lived in Europe, came back and couldn't believe how much lower quality of everything costs much higher. So it is not only done to tourists - although more hike would make it worse, it is to everyone.

When I was in Turkiye in 2022, prices were very low, generally about 25-35% of what they would be in the US. Now, it appears to be more like 50-60%. But that apartment price was amazingly low for a short-term rental.

Thank you Olga for the update. Comparing Portland Oregon USA, prices for eating out, compared to what you showed there, comparable meals here would be 2x to 4x higher and roughly 2X to 3X for the same for groceries. As far as hotels, expect to pay at least $150 to on average $200/night for a most basic room that is not overrun with drug or gang activity. Mid-range hotels this summer in popular areas are averaging about $250-400 per night, and luxury room as high as $1500per night. Apartment rentals have gone up about 300% in the last 5 years. A basic studio typically start around $1200month to Two bedroom flats start at about $1800 and average $2000 or more. $1,000/month gets you a bedroom with a shared bath and possibly kitchen. The cheapest room on Facebook was a room in a barn with no running water, or heat, and literally out-house for $500/month (No joke). If my Landlord kicks-me out of my rent-controlled place she could at least double the rent to about $2300/month. I paid $550 6 years ago, If that happens over 100% of my retirement pension would go for rent alone, so at that point I, like Millions of Americans, I would be homeless, and judging from your update Olga, 'Turkey' seems like a possible escape option. The other being going back to S.E. Asia, maybe getting a long-term sea-view condo in Penang and spending time in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia with border runs. Something many Americans might consider if they only were aware of the option.

@@efeend1 Thank you, can you clarify if you are you referencing the U.S. or Turkey? In the U.S. rent control laws can vary widely depending on state or city. Where I am in the State of Oregon, Rent Increases pegged at state cost of living rates plus few percent. So I've been seeing 7 to 15% annual increases, but if a renter moves out and the landlord does new paint they can raise the rate to what every the market will bare. In my area the market rental rates are 2X to 4X the rent controlled rates, so many Landlords harass and terrorize renters until they move out. Plus, here you need 3X to 5X the monthly rental rate in income to qualify to rent. In that case most people would need $6000 $12,000 per month in Income to rent, and few have that much income, so people are trapped in bad properties, with bad landlords and dangerous neighbors. And now that the U.S. Supreme court has ruled cities and states can criminalize homelessness, many Americans with 2 to 4 times the income of many Europeans begin forces to live as criminals in their vehicles has become a terrifying and hopeless situation. Right now people I know who said they would never leave America are looking for places to escape to.

The kind of vibe she would want is a beach vibe whilst probably still being able to catch a taxi or local transport to maybe some other areas for sight seeing etc ( she would like the beach vibe but she would not enjoy being on the beach for a whole week) Do you have any suggestions of places i could research?

Prices in Turkey are much lower compared to those in the UK or EU, and the quality of goods is significantly higher, giving you great value for your money. When people mention that prices in Turkey have risen significantly, can anyone point out a place where prices haven’t gone up? Price increases are happening everywhere, not just in Turkey.

Heres something off topic that you may find interesting. :) The name of my country has nothing to do with the interesting and delicious bird 'turkey'...... .....but the name of the bird does have a connection with the name of my country, let me explain. :) In the past 40 years 37 countries have changed their name, partially or fully. Obviously one can not change the name of an apple or an orange etc in other languages, but country names are like peoples' individual names, so if you're named John we don't call you Karen. :) Name of my country has always been Türkiye, it's been known as such since around the 1200's. The name it self has a suffix, '-iye', that is Turk-iye, where the -iye suffix means 'land of/belonging to', just like the Latin suffix of '-ia', which exists in such country names like Austr-ia, Austral-ia, Indones-ia etc. Basically, the use of '-iye/-ia' is the same as the the use of '-land' suffix in country names like Ire(Eire)-land, Po(le)-land, Eng(Anglo)-land and so on and so on. Many would remember the country Czechoslovak-ia which changed it's name to Czech Republic and a few years ago changed that to Czechia (that is Czech-ia). The Latin suffix -ia probably originates from Turkish -iye as Turkish been over 10,000 years is much older than Latin which is around 1300 years old. Spelled in different languages in different ways to phonetically resemble (to sound like) 'Türkiye' we got various spellings like; Turq-uía (in Spanish), Turch-ia (in Italian), Turq-uie (in French) Turk-ei (in German) Turk-ey (in English) Mind you this was way before the animal we currently know as turkey was found by the europeans when they explored the north americas. The bird was first sent to europe from north americas in the year 1519, so up until that point there was no bird named turkey.... ...they came across the bird and thought it was a specie of the fowl/chicken they had been buying from the country of Turkiye at the time, so they named the bird 'Turkey Fowl' to define 'Turkish Chicken'... ....just like how a dog breed is known as German Shepherd (because it's from Germany), American Bulldog, British Terrier, Greek Harehound etc etc. In time you don't get to call the harehound simply as Greek or you don't call the terrier Britirsh, or shepherd as simply German, but in time the Turkish Fowl started to be called just 'Turkey' and later 'turkey', and this went on for hundreds of years. Now in modern times, this caused confusion, especially when we have people across the world unable to point to their own country on an atlas. Basically we didn't change the name of our country, we changed the mistake made in the English language. : ) So, there's some tid bit information for you to have a great day, if you read upto this point you have a great night too, ohh just have a wonderfull life. : ) Best wishes. ;)

This was my first and last trip to Turkey. Every single day I had to battle with people over money and what was supposed to be a relaxing holiday with my wife and children turned into a constant battle. On my first visit to a restaurant, I was charged almost 4000 lire for 4 kebabs and 4 cups of juice. The people of Turkey have no integrity and the dishonest nature of the people is unmatched. I have travelled to many countries and have never experienced such dishonesty. The only honest and reliable part of Turkey was the tram system as it has no human interaction and therefore no opportunity for dishonesty. Truly shocking experience

I lived in Istanbul for 9 years, and yes, there are a lot of scammers, not to mention relentless sexual harassment if you are a blonde and blue eyed woman. Always look carefully at the menu and the prices before sitting down, and if they try to overcharge you, calmly say there’s been a mistake, and point to the prices on the menu. They then have no choice but to charge you the correct price. If not, call the Police. Never, ever back down.

Looks a lot cheaper than the UK for food still (price hikes in the UK too), you're showing fast food meals for £3, you pay that just for a portion of chips/fries in the UK these days. A fast food meal like shown in the video is £9/10 . Not your standard prices, but I went to a food festival recently in the North of England and they wanted £10 for a single corn dog among other things! Never seen such a rip off. Eating out is very expensive in the UK now. You need a mortgage to go out. Based on this video - holidaying in Turkey is still cheap comparing to the UK.
