I like your take and insight. I lived in Hanoi for 8 months working full time in the corporate world and travelled to Danang and its on my list of places to retire. I am in my 50s and pretty much can afford to retire anywhere I wish in SE Asia which I will do next year. I like your guide and recommendations. If I may give you some advice: I was there 8 months and did learn the basics of the language as I think we all should when in a foreign land as a token of respect to the natives as well as to make life easier. FYI in Vietnamese the TR is pronounced Ch. So, for example Na Trang is pronounced Na Chang or the common last Vietnamese name Tran is pronounced Chan. And I am so sorry Da Nang has a soft A vowel sound on the Nang. Love your video. Please do not take this the wrong way.

Da Nang is definitely one of the best places to retire in SE Asia, I hope everything goes as planned for you next year. Learning the local language for sure makes living anywhere so much better. We know the right pronunciation of Da Nang and Nha Trang in Vietnamese, but in this video we are speaking English, we say it as it is pronounced in English by native speakers ;) Same as if we were talking (in English) about Japan, we wouldn't call it "Nippon"

In Johannesburg last year we' were spending about 300 usd a month, so how can Da Nang be the cheapest in the world?
@OlgaProGoingPlaces
@OlgaProGoingPlaces 4 күн бұрын
There are places in the world where people survive without money at all. So of course there are cheaper places to live than Da Nang. I think what most people mean when they call Da Nang "the cheapest" is the price/quality ratio to live/retire as a foreigner. But in the end, everyone decides for themselves what works best for them.

be careful when you get out of saigon airport taxi touts will ask you need taxi but they do not take you to the taxi rank .they take you round the corner to a private car who will charge you double when you get to your hotel . always use a taxi meter at the taxi rank

Yes, Vietnam is surely cheaper, but like you both hinted early in your video, Malaysia is nice. Very nice. English widely spoken. Infrastructure better. Medical care quite good. No guns. Excellent mix of foods. Wonderful friendly people too. I agree, KL is a bit much of an urban jungle so I am heading to Penang for retirement. The overall vibe there is just perfect for me.

Vietnam culture does not accept foreigners. Foreigners will always remain foreigners. On top of that Da Nang is big business city, not welcoming. In general, avoid Da Nang, or even Vietnam, as a place to stay.
@OlgaProGoingPlaces
@OlgaProGoingPlaces 9 күн бұрын
We had the opposite experience and would for sure recommend Da Nang to all of our friends who love to go to SE Asia. As to foreigners remaining foreigners - that can be said for any country. It's almost impossible to fully integrate anywhere where most of the people are a different skin color/race than you. Doesn't mean you can't have local friends or enjoy your life there.

The Han river is actually the nicest place of Da Nang. It feels to me you only lived in the tourists area.
@OlgaProGoingPlaces
@OlgaProGoingPlaces 10 күн бұрын
That area is indeed very nice! We thought about trying to move there. But I talked to people who had the experience of living there, and they said that it can be quieter overall, but it feels more humid. The breeze and the ability to walk to the beach every day kept us from relocating across the river. Although we did live in a more local neighborhoods too.

Don't know what you think Europeans are earning, but for most that's not cheap. Maybe if you travel once a year, than you can splurge on a 1000 euro flight, but still it's not cheap. Back then we were traveling every month or two.

Anywhere you go, you have to be careful. PERIOD. I am Vietnamese. I travel to Vietnam EVERY year 2 times at least. Still, I have my cross-body bag in front of me (and one hand on the bag so they know you are being careful). My phone is in my front pants' pocket. I don't talk on phone while walking. If I need to make a call, I stop, go near a business or house, my back against the wall and facing the street watching out for snatchers. JUST BE CAREFUL.

Thanks for the deep dive! I'm moving to Da Nang in January. I have a lot of friends there, mostly teachers. Here's a tip about traveling from the airport to Hoi An: During peak tourist seasons, pre-booking transportation is recommended, but sharing rides can still be an option if you find other travelers. Da Nang airport can get quite busy, so using official taxi services or Grab is safest. While some taxi drivers will offer to share their WhatsApp or Zalo for return trips, it's better to use official booking channels or your hotel's transfer service for reliability and safety. If you plan to stay long-term, a trusted grab driver can be arranged through reputable companies, though expect to pay $100-300 monthly for regular service depending on your needs. Don't try to drive your own motorbike though - I've seen too many accidents. People aren't used to this kind of traffic. If you're not an experienced motorbike driver, stick to Grab.

Love yous presentation skills and thank you for the very good info. (Fly to anywhere from Vietnam. Brilliant. Case by Case. Love it!). Some tips: Humdity is not measured in degrees. 'It gets really hot' is not really a good indicator. (I grew up in Singapore. I love 32 and higher). Maybe good idea to mention why someone would pay for your guide? FB is free. Driving licence not valid? (I am Dutch / Spanish and can drive in Vietnam). 'If you're older'? Uuuum. I'm 67 and have more energy and fun than most 'kids'. You are from another country, the locals are not or maybe, I misunderstood. "Lots of coffee shops". Now, I understand why there are so many Dutch there. 😂

Thanks! Here you can check out monthly averages (temperature) in Da Nang month by month olgapronkina.com/travel/da-nang-vietnam-weather-by-month/ You can drive in Vietnam with a Dutch license, but if you are stopped by police, they most likely will ask for a Vietnamese license. Great to hear that you have a lot of energy at 67. Me at 38 feel like I definitely have less than in my 20's. More responsibilities and health concerns that take that extra energy. For sure if you have the time you can find most of the information on Da Nang for free and ask people on Facebook. Although you never know who will reply and whether their lifestyle and opinions are similar to yours. My guide is for people who share the same (or similar) lifestyle, trust my advice and want to have support via the chat.

I am Turkish and moved to Germany 2 years ago. I did not like the never ending bureucratical issues here and for me life is hard in Germany. I have a very good level German and Germany provides 2nd citizenship, so I chose Germany. The main problem in Turkey is poorness. It is better to be poor in Germany than in Turkey. But if you have a good job and earn well and if you do not have kids, Turkey can be more attractive. Because in this case as someone who earn well, you pay a lot of tax and cannot benefit from the social benefits in Germany. After 2 years in Germany, I can tell that I am bored of the problems I have to manage here and looking forward to the next move. And I do not recommend anybody to come here, especially if you do not speak German.

For me because I’m gluten free & allergic to soy like Renee, I love Thai food better because they can accommodate & cater for someone like myself than Vietnamese food.
