The song from the repertoire of Mariam Nirenberg, Jewish folksinger from Czarnawczyce near Kobryn in 20's and early 30's of XXth C. It's part of the CD Jewish Folksongs from the Shtetl / Jewish Polesye.
Vocal: Olga Avigail Mieleszczuk, violin: Daniel Hoffman, clarinet: Ittai Binnun, accordion: Ofer Shalchin
When I was thirteen years old, I came of age
I went to work to avoid the dole
I ended up on relief and had lots of troubles
The matchmaker confused me with the cursed: 'I do'.
I got engaged and immediately got married
May my enemies be cursed with a shrew like the one I got
No sooner does a person want to marry
He is worse then converted
He is sunk the minute he says: 'I do'.
When I became twenty one years old
I was drafted into the army, of all things
I was soldier for Alexander The Third
Nothing has made me suffer as much as saying: 'I do'.
(translation: Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett)
(Oy vey! Oy vey! Yoshke is gone,
One more kiss and the train will leave...)

The archival footage is mostly from Mukacevo, Czechoslovakia when Carpathian Ruthenia became a part of that country. Some of the footage I use in my doc. film about a Holocaust survivor and her life in Mukacevo. The film is A letter to Wedgewood: The Life and Times of Gabriella Auspitz.

Istnieje pewne pole do budowy myśli. To też należy zrozumieć, że przez wiele stuleci, czyli dziesiątki dekad, Żydzi i Polacy żyli obok siebie, a zdarzało się, że polskie dawne historycznie władze zapraszały kupców żydowskich, by rozwijać handel i rozbudować dane miasto. Były różne losy. Warto zajrzeć w przeszłość. Też warto za pomocą muzyki, czegokolwiek, budować kulturę dobrych wspomnień.

It will never die in our heart but it already died as a World and as a culture!! My husband remembered the pre-war culture and life in Poland and cried. But he was not able to listen to any of them after the war because it looked too artificial to him. It was just a reminder of a vanished (desappeared!) world!

My Jewish family left Poland very early, parts in the 1890s, but my two great great grandparents that I am researching the most left their hometown Wloclawek in 1907 and once they came to America and had children, their stories got lost. As a genealogist, I am trying to build some kind of a story myself of their life in Wloclawek, taking from my own sources as well as others who found information or an eyewitness to what Wloclawek was like back then. My great grandfather’s oldest brother was born there in 1906, but went to America with his mother in 1908, so he probably didn’t have any memory of Poland in his early childhood. Also, there are no pictures anymore of my great great grandparents’ parents or other relatives. Whether they even brought those things to America, or left it all behind, I will never know. Always remember to pass on stories of your life, your childhood, and our family- even if your children or relatives seem un-interested.
