Olight i3T 2 vs. i3T - Pt. 2: 10440 Performance

In this video the Olight i3T 2 EOS is compared with the original i3T EOS when using 10440 lithium rechargeable cells. We compare the output, heat management, and runtimes of both the high and low modes. In my opinion, Olight did a fantastic job with this sequel to an already outstanding flashlight.

I think they did a pretty good job with this upgrade. Another problem many people don’t think about is the higher temperature range of the original does increase lumens but it costs you in 3 ways potentially. 1. The excess heat will reduce emitter life. 2. Same excess heat transfers to the battery 🔋 reducing its life also. 3. Running a 10440 in the original voids the warranty.

I’ve been running a 10440 in my titanium i3t for over a year without out any problems. I even turned it on high one time and let it run all the way down to see runtime. The light and battery are still fine. It gets warm fast, but it really doesn’t get too hot. Maybe the titanium dissipates heat better than aluminum. Idk

I have a I3t titanium that came with a very clicky button, unlike my aluminum one. It’s even a little brighter on high than my aluminum one with the 10440 battery. I don’t think I need to upgrade just yet.

Not sure if you saw in the manual but you can change the output from high or low to come on first. That is a pretty cool option because I prefer the low mode first and some people prefer the high mode first. Everybody wins! ✌️

i just bought the i3t 2, which is my first olight purchase. i'm VERY impressed. the quality in-hand feels really good, especially for such a small light. this is a great little performer and disappears in the pocket. i love how simple and bare bones this thing is. it's a small light that can use a powerful rechargeable battery, or in a pinch, can accept a standard AAA. PERFECT!!!!!!

The i3t 2 is actually programmable. You can set whether you want low to come on first or high to come on first! This light is AWESOME!!!!

for anyone that just wants a good, carry light, this is the one. i bought the i3t 2 and i liked it so much that i bought it again as a present for a relative. so many lights are trying to stand out by having proprietary features that don't actually offer anything productive. this one is simple and works amazing! it can use regular AAA's or rechargeable batteries. even if there is a better light, you STILL can't go wrong with this thing!

Awesome vid. Going with the i3T original, I like the higher lumen low output better than the 2. Im def good w 3hr runtime with the 10440s I got. Won’t even feel the extra weight of an extra battery in my work bag. Thank you!

Gave me a good chuckle seeing you meticulously align the clip at 2:15 so it covers the QR-code and CE mark because I always do that on my i3Ts and i5Ts too 😅. Other than that, great comparison and I definitely agree that the i3T2 is the superior version. The clip is better, the (official) support of 10440s makes it more versatile and the best feature is actually the fact that you can now program the i3T2 so it starts in high mode by default. I really hope they gonna incorporate all those features into the i5Ts as well.

Very cool, thanks for doing these videos! I was hoping to see the i3T 2 hit at least an hour with the 10440 on high. Oh well. :) For someone looking to use 10440's with the i3T 2, is the PK Cell ones the one you'd recommend? Also, do you think Energizer Lithiums would have a slightly longer battery life than alkaline? Thanks!

Thank you! Yes, I typically recommend the PK Cell 10440s. I’ve had good experiences with them and they can be bought on Amazon with a charger for a reasonable price. As far as the Energizer Lithiums vs. Alkalines, I’d check the mAh capacity to be sure. I haven’t tried the Energizer Lithiums yet, myself but they might be a great option.

Have you tested the LiFe chemistry with the i3t2? I picked some up when you did the video a few months ago, and they've been my go-to.

Yeah those LiFePO4s are still my favorites as well. I use them in the i3T 2 but haven’t checked the runtimes yet.

I've found that the early i3T with the 10440 is the brightest. I also have the carbon and copper versions...and the light is noticeably dimmer on high. Olight might have changed emitters or modified so that the light runs cooler on a 3.7v battery. I just got the i3T 2 brass Friendship light. On high with the 10440...its pretty close to the copper version of the i3T. Thanks for the run time test on the 10440. I wonder why Olight left that out.

The i3 is bright enough even with an alkaline, but the 14500 size is more comfortable for me. I tried a pokelit, but it got extremely hot and the battery doesn't last long, so I returned it.

Yeah, the output is incredible but the heat from an i5T and 14500 cell is no joke.

Thank you for this review, I really appreciate it. I want to mention though that Olight had awesome lights in the past. In AAA range they had the i3S EOS which had three modes and a hidden strobe, in AA range they had lignts like S15 Baton and S1a Baton. I understand that many users wanted a more simple and rear clicky light. Still I think some more clever AAA and AA lights would sell weel by Olight.

Nice! Yes, I have read a lot of comments suggesting that a moonlight mode would be nice to have and maybe an medium in between the high and low output. Personally I like the simplicity of the two modes but perhaps some additional functionality could be cool.

Do the demonfire protected 10440's fit in the I3t-2 any better or worse than the I3t? I know your demonfires fit in your I3t's well. I could just barely get a few threads of my I3t's tail caps on with the demonfires. I'm hoping the I3t-2's have just a touch more space(?)

Yes, the Demon Fire 10440s fit in the i3T 2. It is still a tight fit but they seem to fit slightly better than they do in my original i3T. I had to really tighten down the cap on the old version.

2:44 you say that the low mode on the original i3t using the 10440 is more than the high using the AA. Does that mean you're getting 180 lumens with the 10440's on yhe original i3t? If so could you tell me which colours to pick up so that i could get the older version of this flashlight! 2.5-3 hours of runtime at 180 lumens is fantastic! Cheers!

Good question. It is tricky to find the old versions now but I know that a ton of brown ones and black ones were out there. The problem is that newer versions were made in the same colors. The best way to get an old version for sure might be to look at styles that only came out years ago. eBay might be the best place to look. Just got an i3t 2 along with Vapcell 10440s. I noticed that the Valcell battery makes a buzzing sound in the i3t 2. All 4 cells that I tried do this. I then put them into a standard i3t and no buzzing sound. Both lights work and don’t get very hot. Definitely brighter than with alkaline. I will probably return the battery for something else. Not sure if anyone has experienced anything similar.

I wasn't a big fan of the i3t for the longest time because of the run times with a single AAA and it not being compatible with the lithium cell, but the release of the i3t 2 has completely changed my stance on it. If you don't have it, you should track down a friendship i3t 2. The box art doesn't do the finish of the light justice. It is such a nice looking light.

Not all i3T V1 is equally bright using 10440 only a few are really very bright if u get lucky it will land on your hands. Problem with 10440 batteries is it's very low capacity, NIMH has a higher capacity but drains a little in time unlike 10440. There's a tradeoff in everything i guess.

They’re my favourite Olight. I have the plus versions as well but the little OG i3T beats the lot. I thought the Diffuse would be an i3T killer but I have the Diffuse and the i3T is better with tail switch and pocket clip.

Watched part of this because I’m in a hurry.. the brightness is what I’m after, and it looks like i3t is still superior. My i5t with a 14500 blows all this to shit, but also can start fires with black ts lol. I think it’s jsut a facelift of the same flashlight with a throttled driver.
