Hey Chirs, your videos have been sooo helpful, I’ve repaired so much on my White 2-105, but I’m still having problems with the pto. The 1000 speed works great, but the 540 is really lazy to start and has absolutely no torque. I’ve installed a new clutch pack and new seals in the pto, and rebuilt the pto control valve. I did check the hydraulic pressure going to the control valve and it was within the approved range. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks again for posting these repair videos, they’ve been extremely helpful and honestly very entertaining!
@ThatOliverGuyChris4 ай бұрын
I'm not sure what to think. Is the shift collar engaged correctly with the fork? Maybe the fork isn't in the groove, but to one side of the collar and not able to move the collar into the 540 position. With the gear reduction, I would think 540 would get rolling easier than 1000. My guess is that collar, and viscous drag causes the 540 to turn as long as there is no load. I don't think it's anything hydraulic or clutch related, that's the same no matter which speed it is in.

After reading your reply and rewatching your video I was pretty well convinced that the symptoms I was witnessing were impossible. I started wondering if it could be something as simple as not sifting appropriately. Turns out I just didn't pull the shifter far enough. So the repair was pretty noninvasive. Cool! I knew Oliver exported to central America, it's nice to know some of them survived. They had a special version of the 66 diesel they shipped to banana plantations that had no electrical system due to the corrosive humid climate. To start it there was a hand pump that the operator would run to charge up a hydraulic accumulator. Once that was up to pressure, you opened a valve and that spun a hydraulic starter motor that spun the engine. Has he ever seen one of those ?

I used to repair quite a few IH PTOs. Before you could start, you had to remove about fifty gallons of hydraulic fluid. We found a quick way to avoid that step. @ThatOliverGuyChris2 жыл бұрын
If you connect the 2 lines the pto wouldn't work. One line delivers pressure to the valve, and that's what engages the clutch pack and brake, the valve decides which when you move the lever. The other line lets oil return to the reservoir when the pto clutch or brake are turned off. It would stop the leak though.

Did you ever pull the PTO shaft and have the bevel gear that drives the hydraulic pump to have it's nut drop off? We did have that problem on the early stuff. Know one dealer that pushed the bottom out of the casting on a 2255 when that nut went thru the gear train. According to the factory service bulletins, one had to remove the top cover, which required removing the cab to get to the retaining nut or to retrieve in from down in the transmission and do the service bulletin repair. I conferred with my Snap-On dealer and he ordered me a crows foot style hydraulic line wrench to fit the nut. With that, we were able to reach in thru the pump mount hole and super clean the nut and threads with the nut still on the PTO shaft. By redoing the already failed retainer and using some Loctite that it would take dynamite to release we re-installed the nut and tightened it the best we could. At least it kept it from falling off on a future PTO shaft removal. A couple of hours of painful work but the warranty time paid for removing the cab and system top more than made up for those jobs where whoever made up the flat rate had their heads up their ass. I had attended the IH training school in a technical visit and learned that they determined the flat rate by taking something apart and putting back together again 5 times. They measured the time to get say the rear wheels off, then got everything ready to do the next step and then simply timed themselves on the next step and added that time on. Then they averaged the times. By the last couple of times, every bolt was so worn out all you had to do is holler BOO and they would jump out. I am sure the gurus at Charles City did the same thing.

BTW, I still have that expensive tool in my toolbox. Every time I see it I think back those first 55 series tractors and also remember the high-pressure leaks in that stupid pump outlet hose. We had a customer get sprayed by one.

@@ThatOliverGuyChris That was early, also the PTO shafts that had cutting marks that caused oil to be pushed forward into the clutch. Those were fun to find at first. Then the 4-150 and 4-180 tractors that the A/C could not hold up to 100 degree days because the stupid things drew air from the dirtiest spot possible. Homemade air ducts to top of cab fixed that. 1855s that chucked #1 rod thru the injection pump. 2150s that they could not get to cool well. We were happy when told to haul our remaining ones back to the warehouse and found they sent most of them to Viet Nam for the president's farm. Yes, White had gutted Oliver well and it got worse. Then grain prices went into the dumper and we all lost our hind ends. Yeppie, those were the good old days.

You could swap the complete unit between the models. The biggest thing to watch out for is the 2255 (or any of the CAT V8 tractors like the 4-150) ones are geared differently because of the higher engine rpm. Even the ones for an 1855 (2400 engine rpm) are geared slightly different than a 2-105 (2200 engine rpm). All the seals and clutch discs are the same though.

He probably did make more money than farming at the time but as tractors evolved, repairs evolved and time requirements lengthened, and shop rates kept going up - he just didn't want to start charging his friends and neighbors to keep up with everything the newer tractors required, so he went to farming full time. There is, however, a seemingly growing demand for older equipment - stuff that can be worked on without a computer. Some of this type of stuff might start being lucrative!

What's the difference between1655 1955 2255 tractors as far as parts interchangeably etc
@ThatOliverGuyChris4 жыл бұрын
The 1955 has the Waukesha 310 engine and the 2255 used either the Cat 3150 or 3208 V8 engine, so those 2 are different from the flywheel forward. They used the same dash and controls, and hydraulic system. The fenders and seat are the same for both. The pto units were different only in the gearing because of engine speed differences. Both transmissions were built on a similar housing, but very few of the parts would be interchangeable due to gearing differences because of the engine speeds. The 1655 used a smaller waukesha, a whole different rear end, transmission and pto unit, there's not a lot interchangeable between it and the other 2. All three used the over/under, which has many common parts between the 3 models, but enough differences that you can't take a complete unit from one of those 3 and put it in any of the others without swapping some parts on them.

Chris is there anything to look for when buying a 1855 cuz I am looking at buying another tractor and I don't really know Oliver well enough to know what to look for
@ThatOliverGuyChris4 жыл бұрын
The 1855 is one of the more notorious Olivers. There's the usual things to check on any tractor, fluid levels, milky oil that shows signs of water contamination, try all the gears and listen for weird noises. One thing to check on an 1855 is rod bolts. With the engine off, grab the fan and turn the engine until you can see a connecting rod through the oil filler/dipstick hole. If the rod bolt heads are 6 sided, it hasn't been updated. If it has 12 point bolt heads, at least that update has been done, making it more reliable. Overall, that's about the only 1855 specific thing I can think of that you can check externally. Try hooking something to the hydraulics to see if it raises well. Check for looseness in the steering. The more you can test drive it, the more likely you are to notice if something seems wrong.

@@ThatOliverGuyChris okay thanks

how long did it take you from start to finish
@ThatOliverGuyChris4 жыл бұрын
I'd say 5-6 hours. I got it out and torn down, then had to take off. I finished it the next day, but didn't really keep track of my time.

The bearing is called a, "Torrington thrust bearing" Chris. Another tip for inserting a shaft into a seal on an incline is to get some shim stock sheet, and cut to the diamiter of shaft and hang it half on half off so shim stock enters seal first......www.fastenal.com/product/raw-materials/shims-and-shim-stock/shim-stock-sheets

Good thing you’re not working on a bridge the way you’re dropping tools.

After doing this degree of work,NO WAY would I ever put in regular hydro/trans oil.Amsoil would be the only thing in the system. Amsoil has chemicals that actually protect and preserve seals.The seals would never wear out either.

Enjoy your videos I just wanna tell you about an incident with me I was in my early 20s and it was in the early 70s we had a 3020 I had just put a rear PTO Seal in and my dad was cutting hay with it I was sitting on the left-hand fender watching the Qatar go up and down on the three point hitch and I noticed how hard it was pushing on the PTO. And how hard it was pulling on the PTO shaft going up we shut down and I took the PTO shaft off the tractor and long is it one under a loaded slid real easy but when you turned it in the direction of the oh turn it was hard and it took everything I had to push it in and pull it out dad went to the house to eat lunch and I took the PTO shaft off of a new Holland square Baylor that was Square and I cut and welded and made a PTO shaft for the hey Carter grazed it up good he went to the feel and it worked great it didn’t have any of the plastic covers on it like the original and that Hey cutter was one of those hollow egg shaped PTO shaft you should check your PTO shaft to see if they are binding up when I slide in and out
@ThatOliverGuyChris4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. That bind can cause a lot of thrust on the pto. Glad to hear you got it figured out, and fixed. Thank for watching.
