Little Mark Lester can be easily spotted at 1:43 when he cheerfully stands up and claps from the 10th row. He is wearing a child tux and is sitted next to co-stars Shani Wallis and Ron Moody (Fagin). Jack Wild was flown from England with Mark but was seated in another row of the Dorothy Chandler, on account he was a nominee for best supporting actor.

Sadly, 2001 wasn't even nominated for Best Picture. :( Likely why it didn't win back then was because critics and audiences gave diverse responses due to the dark apocalyptic tone for those who saw it, probably not seeing it as 'Best Picture' material. But as time went by, 2001 later garnered a cult following and then became one of the best films of all time. If the Academy Awards happened for 1968 again to this day, the Academy would choose 2001: A Space Odyssey.

While I admire Oliver Reed's work and enjoy Oliver! as a very entertaining and cute little musical, it goes without saying that Stanley Kubrick's direction of 2001 was much more deserving of the Oscar this year. Truly a revolutionary film, if only the audience in 1968 could realize it....I like to think that The Tree of Life is going down the same path as 2001 did. When it was released just a few years ago, it was readily dismissed as confusing and boring. But Malick, like Kubrick, is an genius!

People mistake Kubrick’s high concept film ideas for great directing. Just because you like the film’s plot or production design, does not mean that the director directed the narrative and its images to create a comprehensive telling of the story. Especially when 2001 has no actual story to tell. Kubrick is not a great director: coverage continuity, composing, timing, performances. The equivalent to him now would be Christopher Nolan who is hailed as a “genius” but one who fails time and time again to execute on his big brain ideas-Inception and Tenet being examples.
