I want to seed a couple of new hay fields where I harvested wheat. I decided it was a nice day, it was time to drive Herman! How does fuel consumption compare with the 310 and the Hercules?

I looked up the Nebraska tests for the 1950, 1950-T, and the 2150. When it comes to fuel economy the 310 in the T came in as the winner with 16.2 horsepower hours per gallon of fuel used. The 1950 with the Detroit produced 15.14 hp hour per gallon, and the 2150 with the Hercules came in at 15.24 horsepower hours per gallon. The higher the number the more horsepower it made from one gallon of fuel. I know from running the 2050 on the same setup that it will lug through the tough spots better than the 1950, and my dyno says the 1950 has more horsepower.

@@ThatOliverGuyChris Chris - I don't know this for a fact, but my 2050 seemed to have an engine design that as you lugged down and dropped engine rpms, the torque seemed to increase and it really lugged out of situations.

To drive a Detroit in the proper frame of mind, you need to look at your last income tax return so you're good and angry. Then you can go out and throw the throttle stick all the way forward to get it up to full power and keep it bouncing off the high speed governor.

Farmer I worked for as a teenager bought a new 1950 4wd with cab and air in '67. Good thing it had the over/under tranny because everytime you hit a soft spot, you had to downshift. We had a Oliver dealership in my hometown, so I grew up with them. I prefered the 990 over the 1950, even tho it was 2wd. Nice video, thanks for posting.

Worked in a scrap yard with several American friction cranes and an old Link Belt excavator with a shear. The Americans all had 6-71 Detroits, but the link belt had an 8v71 with dual mufflers. When the mufflers rusted out, that thing bellered! Ear muffs were MANDITORY running these things!

The first thing is That it is SUNDAY. The second thing is that Herman with his Detroit Diesel is a sound that was a trademark sound of the Oliver top-of-the-series tractors for years. The sound he emanates when the load comes on is fantastic. Actually, the exhaust sound is augmented by the sounds of that Rootes Blower. We had a customer who tried several exhaust muffling set-ups and never got the noise down to where he was happy. One would have to build a sound-absorbing set of panels around the Detroit including the oil pan. Diesel truck makers have gone to sound-deadening panels and oil pan covers to make the diesel noise less. Making a Detroit-powered Oliver tractor quiet would simply ruin the mystic that goes with it. Kudos to the drone operator for being able to drive a tractor and fly a drone at the same time. At least we do not hear you saying "This will probably kill me" as the Rodney Dangerfield of Oliver videos does. Also, I wonder if all of his DeWalt batteries have died as in the last couple of his videos he has used hand tools. So we are entertained by the Professor and the class clown which makes for great viewing. Keep it up. BTW, Dyno Day needs to happen again.

I drove a 1964 1900 for years on the family farm. Pulled a disc and drag harrow. Many days were completed only because the harrow picked up some barbed wire to repair the broken bolts. I am happy I can still hear.

I became friends with the former mechanic of the Fowlerville Oliver dealership. I remember him telling me stories about try to sell these Olivers with the Detroit Diesels to two cylinder John Deere guys that couldn't afford or even get one of the 4020's Deere was making. Many, MANY of them brought the Olivers back because they thought they were riding a run away chainsaw. A LOUD run away chainsaw. Once they had some days in the seat, and saw what real horsepower was like, most of them kept the machines. His service manager Tom also told me about an add on deal they had for smaller Olivers to inject LP in to a diesel engine. It was intended to jump the horsepower for a minute or so to get you through a tough spot in the field. Farmers being farmers too many of them thought this was their new cheap supercharging to get full time horsepower. The lucky ones just ran the LP tank dry and stopped in the field with too much implement and too little power to pull it. The unlucky ones found out that that kind of cylinder pressure and heat really shortens the life of an engine, by years. Tom said they stopped selling them after a single season. I had a 2050 for three planting seasons. Had a Deere 6x16 plow for it. Truth is, I could have pulled eight bottoms with it. I went from a 400 IH with about 55 hp to 120 hp on the draw bar. No comparison. And it sipped fuel compared to the gas job IH's we were running.

The sound of that tractor would make me want to be a farmer! My Grandpa ran IHC and Farmall and a couple of old Oliver row crop 70s. He had a 460 Farmall an 806 and an 856 IHC. For combines he had 3 John Deere 95s one with a cab but the water cooler was broken when he bought it. And he still had a 55 that my uncle Oscar always operated. Grandpa didn't retire fully from the farm until 1995 I think. The last year I had the privilege of working with my Grandfather and my beloved uncle Glenn was 1987 or 88. Grandpa had bought a new swather by then I think that year. His old Heston with the V4 Wisconsin had given up the ghost and International built a bunch of swathers without cabs. So they could hardly give them away. So Gramps got it cheap. We used a New Holland twine bailer. Grandpa was too frugal to buy a starter for it and the fuel pump was a little weak. So while Grandpa spun the front pulley on the crankshaft my uncle Glenn would blow in the gastank. On account it obviously wasn't a pto driven bailer. We put up a lot of hay in those sheds and had a great time doing it. I so miss those days! And we were almost free back then to.

I miss tractor shows in the central valley of CA where I grew up; heck, the crop dusters in the area even put on a little airshow sometimes. A great way to grow up. I really prefer the DD's as they rev, e.g. old grain trucks and semi's. Maybe becuz they can hit that 2600 rpm or thereabouts revline and then bog down after a downshift? Hard to say.

I grew up in the 70s working on a farm just outside of Fredericksburg Virginia with all Oliver equipment. They were all 50 Series except 1600 tricycle. There was an 1850, 1950T, and 2150 fwa with a day long cab plus a full compliment of Oliver implements. Every time I see Herman I think how good he would look with a rops and canopy. Thanks for taking me back to my teenage years.

I have an old Terex wheel loader with a 6-71 Detroit in it. They tend to work well in heavy equipment like your Oliver since they make most of their power right near the red line. We have an old Pete 352 semi we still haul with with an 8v71 DD in it and 2 other pieces of equipment with those engines. They're loud, heavy, and leak oil, but are built to last. Keep doing what you do best Herman! Working hard and LOUD! haha

I had a small Tonka tractor and trailer that must have been modelled after one of these. When I first saw Herman, I had to laugh, because it was my little fat-tired tractor come to life. Herman seems to have zero trouble pulling that rig along. I like to imagine those tractors as if they had continued along on their development cycle instead of being phased out. Herman with a modern cab would be a nice ride.

I know a farmer in Indiana that has a 1950 fwa with regular wheels. He built a cab for it, and mounted it on aor bags. He also put air brakes on it, a nice ac unit, and a few other bells and whistles. It was pretty slick

Awesome video, one of the things I like most is how you'll take the time to explain things and provide the backstory. You can do the drone footage with the crazy music behind it and make it seem like this big extravagant thing is happening, or you can do what you do which is good footage good commentary good explanations entertainment and knowledge all put into one video. I'm a big farming fixing and fabricating fan which I'm sure you knew already lol, but I look at some of the comments Andy gets and there's people saying he talks too much same thing but I would much rather listen to you guys talk and explain things instead of listen to royalty free music and drone footage of the same tractor year after year. I think it attracts a different kind of audience, we're here because we want to hear what you have to say.

I hate tuning in to watch a video and it's cheesy royalty free pop music that sounds like someone driving a road roller through a duck farm. It takes a bit of extra time to put the GoPro out to catch the audio, then sync that up in editing. I want to hear them running. I went to plow day a couple days ago and got some great drone footage, I didn't catch audio to sync with the drone, but sid get some GoPro footage from the ground. I figure I'll have some low level muscic in the background and do some voice over for the drone shots. I don't get music complaints as long as there is a banjo in there somewhere. 😂

Dad actually looked at an Oliver with the same engine in it (I wasn't with him so I don't know what model other than it was a row crop), but he didn't like how loud it was. So he ended up buying a Deere that was just as loud with less power that was a complete and total pain in the ass to maintain because it was built in Germany. What a POS to work on; even the local dealership didn't want to touch it because it was such a pain. That was one of the first wave of what Deere has done across the board from what I can see. If I had the money and a time machine, I'd go back and buy up IH, Oliver and AC and take them private to keep them safe from the Wall Street thieves.

My dad ran a Diamond Reo dump truck back in the 70 and 80's that had a 6-71 Detroit in it. He still talks about that old beast and the racket it made. He said one time the muffler fell off soon before he was headed through town and that it shook the whole town of Lebanon PA 😂😂😂

The nick name for that two stroke gm diesel was " screaming jimmy". It has a sound all it's own. I knew a lot of truck drivers that hated that engine. It was noisy and required high rpm to get the power band.

My cousin works for a Deere dealership in Nebraska. They had an articulated four wheel drive there last fall when I was out for a visit. It was equipped with the terra tires. That's a $50,000 option. Make sure you dig up all those stub fence post. 😮

As a retired heavy equipment operator in and out of the military, I ran plenty of Euclid rock dumps and other heavy equipment with Detroits. It brings back fond memories. 😊 I can't get over them tires . How much to replace the back ones?

That size is all over the place on price. On the low end, around $4,000 each for some no name tire brand I've never heard of, to over $8000 each for Firestone radials. It would probably be somewhere in the area of $15k to replace all 4.

I have a question If you know the answer but I was noticing on the 4-Digit Oliver tractors they use different dash layouts are you aware of why they might have used different ones? I guess I need more info. Are you talking about how the throttle is under the steering wheel on early 4 digits vs on the side with later? That was because they added tilt steering so the throttle had to move. You'll notice that 15xx and 16xx don't have a speedometer in the dash. That was a cost savings thing. If you put all the bells and whistles on the smaller model, they end up not being much cheaper than the big ones. Then for the 55 series they redesigned the dash, but only for the 1755 and larger. That was kind of out of necessity since they were going with hydraulic actuated brakes. They had to find a place to put the brake valve, and to get the pedals to connect to it. While they were at it, they moved the throttle and 3 speed levers to the bottom of the dash, getting them closer to the operator. The 1555 and 1655 did not get these updates because they kept their open center hydraulic system. Once again, they were trying to keep the price point on the smaller tractors lower. Plus it could be a sales tool. "Look at all the features you can get if you step up from a 1655 to a 1755" If there's something else I missed please let me know, and I'll try to answer it.

@@ThatOliverGuyChris Chris: I think part of it also is that once White took over, Cockchutt, Oliver and MM ended up sharing product lines, especially on the bigger tractors and some of that is reflected in the control locations. My 69 2050 Oliver was pretty much a green painted MM more than an Oliver.

You have to respect the engineering that went into Detroit 2-strokes. That engine was running 2400 rpm through the whole video, so it was running the valvetrain at 4800 rpm equivalent in a 4-stroke engine. They can do that for thousands of hours. When was the last time you held your pickup or car engine at 4800 rpm for even 20 minutes?

While in the Navy in the 70's we had 6-71's on Mike boat's, capt. gigs, then when i got out and joined the Fire service all our engine's and Trucks had 8-72's, the sound of those Detroit's screaming in your ears as you are riding backwards in the jump seat next to the doghouse is something I will never forget, the day they stopped putting 2 strokes in our rigs was a sad day. all because of some tree hugging %$#@ at the EPA 🤬

I haven't had any problems, but I've needed very little. I'm actually impressed how well Gehl has supported these old machines. There's a dealer by the name of German-Bliss that has a lot of the Gehl parts books online. You can look through and see what is available and pricing.

It's a little lower than some of the other engines Oliver used at the time. I just pinned another comment to the top with the same question. I looked up some Nebraska tests for 3 models and gave the fuel economy for each.

The 1850 diesel is a great tractor. The Perkins is a good reliable engine, and parts are pretty easy to find. That or a 1650 are good all around tractors, it just depends on how much power you need as to which size to get. I do use mine here and there. I do have quite a few tractors in that size to choose between when I'm doing things too

Isn't 2100 + rpm fast compared to other tractors? I have only worked with small tractors of pre 1960 and of course their pto is 540 rpm

For engine speed, no. This tractor has a dual speed pto, so it will do 540 or 1000, but the engine has to be turning 2400 to get those speeds on the pto

The name stuck. So much so that second owner kept calling him Herman, and so did I when I bought him.
