He is spot on. I am from Appalachia originally, and my Dad was a Pearl Harbor Survivor), but my parents moved to Indiana when I was 4 yrs. of age. In Indiana, we had no running water, an outhouse, and my dad farmed and sold his crops yearly. He managed that small amount the whole year. We did not have nice clothes/stylish like the other kids in school, but they were always clean and starched. My parents worked so very hard to put food on the table and wanted no welfare. We never went hungry or cold. Since we had a wood/coal stove, my dad would sit in a chair beside the stove and doze off sitting in that chair all night to ensure we were warm. My mother and father raised a big garden every year (shared their homegrown produce w/o cost to our neighbors when they got what they needed) and my mother canned; we had milk right from the cow that my parents milked daily; mom making her own butter; etc. It was a tough life, but my parents were strong believers (born-again) and we were loved. When I was 19, I married the love of my life who had a simple raising as well, but not in a Christian Home. He joined the USMC and spent 33 yrs. serving this nation. We had 3 children who had what they wanted as much as what they needed. I am glad I had my upbringing rather than my children's, although one of my sons gave his life for this country. My Dad taught me the importance, beginning in about 4th grade, how it was so important to keep up on what was happening on the news (then real news) and explained how it would impact my life. He was so very wise and although he only had an 8th grade education, he could do our math problems without any problems. He, at the time of his death in 1997) was disillusioned about how the country was going and I am just as disillusioned today as it only gets worse. I have depression and anxiety as well to see what my grandchildren are going through and what my great grands will have to go through. Many, many Americans identify with this song -- people like me. To me he's saying it's okay donating to some charity to help kids in faraway countries but what is being done to protect kids in their own country. That seems to me a more poignant point than anything about some miners. The song isn't about mining, or farming or any specific work. I could of course be wrong nonetheless but until I find out otherwise, I do think your original interpretation of the lyrics is correct and that is also my interpretation of what he's saying.
