We had 1850 gas with fender tanks. It was a great addition to a tractor that sucked it's share of fuel to produce the HP. It did save many trips back home or using a portable fuel tank to keep it in the field. We had a fair amount of vapor lock with it in warm weather. Put an electric fuel pump on which helped. Great history lesson Chris. Hope you had a great 4th.

@bigun4473 жыл бұрын
You just touched on something that some farmers forgot to do. We had some who wanted to keep the weight on the rear wheels so they would fill the tanks and shut off the valves at the bottom. IF they forgot to switch a vented fender cap onto the main tank and put the non-vented main tank cap on the fender they had problems. Maybe the tractor would simply not be able to suck the fuel out of the non-vented main tank and stop running. The other thing that could and did happen was that the tractor would continue running, albeit is not well, and the farmer would suddenly see his fuel cap disappear down thru the hood. It was possible to get enough vacuum on the main tank to cause it to collapse. Just like when you were in school and the science teacher drew a vacuum on a metal gallon can and it would collapse.
@ThatOliverGuyChris3 жыл бұрын
I've heard about a few front tanks collapsing from someone not having the vent cap on the right tank. I've never seen one, but I have seen a couple that were puckered in just a bit.

@@ThatOliverGuyChris We had a 1955 tank shrivel up so much we could take it out of the straps without removing them. Most people do not realize that fuel pumps just create a low pressure on the suction side and the atmospheric pressure is what pushes the liquid to the pump, and good transfer/fuel pumps could create enough negative pressure to do the deed. Some old aircraft used the same principle of the fender fuel tanks to drain auxiliary tanks first and the main tank gauges would only start to show usage when the auxiliary tanks were empty. A simple method that did not require fancy fuel tank switches or auxiliary tank pumps. That is basically why cars and engines of old had hand pumps mounted that simply pressurized the fuel tanks. That was one of the jobs of the riding mechanic in race cars, pump the lever to maintain fuel pressure. Old sprint cars had glorified tire pumps, usually mounted on the outside of the cockpit, that the driver had to pump

It looks like those tank fenders are only slightly adjustable for width, like they can't be moved on the axle, just with those small slots. Can they be adjusted in to accommodate 60" tread width for 30" rows? And can they be compatible with the ROPS/canopies which have become popular on tractors from those years?
@ThatOliverGuyChris2 жыл бұрын
There's a fair amount of adjustability between the slots on the tanks and the different holes on the axle. They can be used with the ROPS canopy, but you won't be able to get the tires in enough for 30 inch rows. Even without the ROPS, I think it would hard to get it to work on 30s.

It could have been. I'm not sure why they would not get the other tank while they are at it, but it was an option.
@TonyM1322 жыл бұрын
If the diesel tractors used just suction for fuel delivery to the main tank, then I assume once one fender tank ran empty you could not get remaining fuel out of the other tank, since it would just suck air... right? And that leads to the question: What causes fuel to be suctioned from both tanks at equal rates? I would think one would end up running empty well before the other just because of slightly less resistance to flow on one side from any number of factors (which would then lead to the problem of not being able to get the rest of the fuel from the other tank...). Am I missing something here?
@ThatOliverGuyChris2 жыл бұрын
The 2 fenders T together. Gravity takes care of them coming down equally. If you fill just one fender tank, gravity will even the 2 tanks out, even while the tractor is running.
@TonyM1322 жыл бұрын
@@ThatOliverGuyChris Oh, that is a different story, if gravity works in its favor instead of against it, not just suction. I'll have to look at one in person. It looked to me in the video like that T-connection was well above the bottom of the fender tanks. If I'm thinking about it right, I guess the lower the T is mounted, the better it should work. Thanks for the answer. Since you were nice to answer that one, I'll ask another in a new comment...

I wonder how bad those fender tanks are about being leaky on a tractor in average condition after 50 to 60 years.
@ThatOliverGuyChris3 ай бұрын
Surely there are some bad ones out there, but I've never had a set give me trouble. They don't have a water trap, so any moisture that had condensed would end up in the main tank where it's water trap would catch it. The right one on this tractor does have a leak, but that's from someone putting the wrong bolt in the mount. It was too long and pierced the tank.
