I had my first arms around the neck slow dance with a girl named Jean in the 8th grade back in 1968 and needless to say, it was quite a thrill for an emerging adolescent. Years later at our 40th class reunion I sadly learned she had passed away from breast cancer. But, I will forever remember her as “young and alive” and cherish the memory of that dance. Rest In Peace Jean. Love, J.

My dad died in 1969, when I was 3. The same year this song was released. For my Mother, it became a song of sadness and also hope, concerning our loss. I can remember everyone being upset when he died in 69, even though I was only 3. And I have 2 vivid memories of my Father and me. My Mom died in 2004. This song means even more to me, than ever. Peace to all.

So sorry…life can sure be hard on us losing the ones we love so much. Lost my oldest son on 9-4-19 just 3 days before his 54th birthday and his death is still an open homicide investigation…he was a CPA and owned his own accounting firm in Allen, Tex. and the woman they are still investigating is the woman to whom he was married to for 20 months at the time. I wish your wife was still here and my son’s was the one who was gone. The last 2. 1/2 yrs. have been hard, horrible and very sad. I miss my son so much…and that woman has not called me…not one single time to say she is sorry my sweet son is gone…not one time. I am so sorry for your loss…it is just not fair.

This song was written, words and music, by Rod Mckuen, who was the most popular poet in America in the 60's and 70"s, but who always considered himself a songwriter first. And you must admit, with this one he hit the grand slam homerun in the last inning of the World Series. This song stacks up to "Yesterday" or "Your Song" with its poignant beauty. A masterpiece.

Memories....1969 was the year I entered the Marine Corps. I remember this song as I was heading into a new lifestyle. I needed the discipline and said goodbye to the riff-raff I was hanging out with. Unfortunately, the folks I was introduced to, were worse than the ones I left behind as the court system gave many two options, Jail time or a stretch in the Marine Corps. But this song was a gentle reminder of everything I left behind including a rowdy lifestyle. Thanks for the post!

My mothers name was Jean. It is my middle name. My mother took me into a piano bar once, in the early 70’s when I was around three years old or so. I remember the pianist started playing this song when he saw her. My mother was a very sad, lonely and abused person. She left our family shortly after that memory. I met her again when I was 15. I was never treated like a daughter, but she doted on my four older sisters. I had to be in foster care. I don’t know what to think of this song… it should be pretty… I’m not sure.
