When I was studying engineering in Montreal, I used to live in an appartement across a jazz bar “Le Grand Café”. Oliver Jones was often playing gigs, I used to chat with him, indeed a great and humble human being. I was bringing my books and was trying to study while listening to Oliver playing: not surprisingly it didn’t work out but still ended with my engineering degree. Two of the greatest Montrealers jazz musicians.

Treasure what you have, for one day it will be gone and all you will have are your memories. Make them wonderful for you and others, too. That is what Oscar & Oliver did and aren't you glad? @timmoneel3 жыл бұрын
@@rosalynkaplan8756 Not sure about the story, but Oscar Peterson's interview on Jazz Profile said he practiced "about eighteen hours a day." This was when he was in high school, and he had to do the hard stuff first: Czerny, Hanon, scales, arpeggios, left hand voicings, etc.
@Eldorias2 жыл бұрын
Oscar never practiced ?? When he was 9 yo he was already working six hours a day, according to his sister... Oscar was obviously a genius but no genius succeeds by not practicing, the gift is nothing without hard work

Not to take away anything from the great Oscar, but he once had a match: Gene Harris. For those unfamiliar with this genius, think of him as Oscar with dirt under his fingernails! Listen to the Album G.H. Live at Otter Creek. The thrill of my life was playing (in a piano store on Bloor Street, Toronto) on the Bosendorfer they shipped all over N. A. when Peterson was performing. It didn't have that big New York bass of a Steinway, but the upper register was good for five more notes than a Steinway -- it kept drawing my hand up and up. Not at the same level, of course, but reminiscent of Oscar's playing on the album Very Tall with Bags. It was remarkable hearing they affected each other. Bags played twice as many notes as usual, and Peterson play about half his normal quotient. If you are a huger O.P. fan, dig up the CBC series "All About Oscar." Wonderful background information.

Interesting. I saw him at the Village Vanguard while a student at Deerfield Academy in the late fifties, with Jazz at the Philharmonic in Munich in 1962, and solo at Dartmouth College in 1977-8? He talked to the audience a lot and at one point said he said he was often asked "What's the definition of Jazz?" He immediately sat down and ripped of twenty seconds of sweet Georgia Brown, then turned to the audience and said "This my definition of Jazz" If a guy walked out from behind that curtain and put a gun to my head and said 'Play it again EXACTLY is you just did!', I would say shoot, I have no idea what I just played!" Works for me.
