In my humble opinion, and with no disrespect intended towards the Alto and Soprano soloists, the Bari soloist was the only one who got the feel of the tune. Her solo reflected the mood of the piece perfectly and, for me, she stood out! A beautifully constructed solo that showcased her talent while staying within the feel of this wonderful tune. Alto and Soprano, you both are great soloists, but there comes a time when you have to deny your virtuosity and just play to the emotions and intentions of the piece. I think that in this performance you both played all your cards way too soon. We now know what you can do and your solos in future tunes in your setlist will just be more of the same. From the Bari soloist, I do not get the impression that she has showed us all she can do, and therefore I would look forward to hearing more from her. I mean no disrespect. This is just a tip I learned long ago from one of my mentors. Don't play all you know. You'll have nothing for the rest of the gig. Play the tune! In context: I am a professional trombonist, classical and jazz, of 35 years standing. My most brilliant mentor was the Canadian trombonist/pianist/composer Hugh Fraser. He not only taught me how to play, but also how to perform. And the two are very different! Gorgeous piece by Oliver Nelson, beautifully played by the Frankfurt Radio Big Band! Thank you!

Interesting comment about the bari player's solo. She is sort of channeling Oliver himself on tenor in his original recording of Stolen Moments. She has a similar time sense and way of developing melodic ideas. Very satisfying.

What about Eric Dolphy?

@@hrbigband The alto player sounds like he's been listening to a lot of Dolphy on alto. Eric Dolphy always struck me as exploring different sides of his personality on flute, then alto, then bass clarinet. A master on all three. BTW, Eric's flute solo on Oliver's original recording knocks me out!
