I'd just love to watch you rip apart The Natural Born Killers! The movie seems to be some kind of a holy grail for many film enthusiasts, but I've always found it impossible to stomach in its noisy, self-indulgent tackiness.

I love the band The Doors. I think Jim Morrison was an iconic frontman. That said there is always a sensationalism to any Oliver Stone picture. To me Oliver was simply attempting to make a mythological figure out of Jim. Oliver was a product of that counter culture, hippie late 60’s. Those people made a mythology surrounding many of their heroes, Hendrix, Ali, Lennon, Leary…etc. It was misguided to say the least.

As a teenager, I always thought Oliver Stone was top-tier cringe and thought The Doors a joke well before this came out. I think straight biopics are inherently hampered and ludicrous. There will be wigs. That said, one of the best is Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story by Todd Haynes, both heartfelt and harrowing

Lastly, about the depictions of the hippie aesthetic: it makes sense in the San Francisco scene, but I doubt places like New Haven and Miami were totally flooded with freaks in full hippie garb in 68/69. Pictures of Grateful Dead concerts throughout the 1970s are neat to look at, you actually don't see much tie dye. Sure the hair is long, it was the 70s, but the majority of people are wearing jeans and nondescript shirts, many with collars. Half the crowd wasn't naked, and they definitely weren't dancing around giant bonfires. But I understand playing it up to date a period piece to a degree. I actually disagree and think they did a decent job with most of the girls in the 1966 club scenes. Only Meg looked a bit over the top in those. The band's clothes in the Venice era were also pretty accurate. One can't deny the film's many flaws regarding creative liberties, but I think they mostly did a decent job on costume and wardrobe and set dressing, all up until we get to the end where they glued that horse hair to his head and face... And yeah I should edit to say regardless their absurdity, the practical realities of shooting those concert scenes must have been incredible, however cartoonish they are, they're impressive. I'd love to hear from people who were in those scenes, they're probably around 60 now. I bet a lot were LA weirdos.

Well, there's a tendency of our memories to inflate the prominence of certain trends at the time they first appeared as opposed to years after they went mainstream. E.g., people often act like everyone had a mullet in the 80's, when mullets peaked in the early 90's, years after they first appeared in the 70's (Bowie and McCartney had mullets in the 70's).

Just a quibble but when Tom mentions the theater where Star Wars premiered, you put up a photo of a theater called the Coronet; according to Wikipedia and some blog posts it was actually the Northpoint Theater. Was the Coronet the theater Tom was thinking of?

Now that I think about it, while I'd ingested pot and alcohol separately many times, the first time I combined them to the point of double vision, laying on the ground nearly incapacitated, The Doors were playing. That double album of the hits was always in rotation among my friends and was playing one night when we all trekked into the woods to have a bonfire party on the banks of the river. I remember a barge coming up the river and shining spotlights onto the banks, that woke me up enough to get up and rejoin the party. But I'd gotten into the band well before experimenting with real drugs. When I was 14 I used to ride my bike to a gas station where a guy would sell me cigarettes. I could get there and back in the time it took to listen to Light My Fire, but I'd usually ride around smoking one while Not To Touch the Earth played next on some greatest hits cassette I had. Have no idea where I got that tape now but it made me a big Doors fan. "Fire" was especially important, I hadn't heard much music with extended instrumental breaks. It began a lifelong love affair with improvisational, jam band type music.

The Doors were a little before my time, but I still remember hearing them in the late 70's and onward, was never a fan. When this movie released we went to see it, became a huge Doors fan. Then in the next year or so after reading a few books on them and watching old clips from Manzarek and Krieger, it starts to shed light on how inaccurate this movie actually was. Even from the beginning where Morrison leaves the classroom, it implies he quit UCLA, never happened, he graduated. Obviously the Sullivan performance is also wrong, people can watch the movie version compared to the real version and see for themselves. There are a few things they got right, but overall, it's very inaccurate. Loved Oliver Stone for his Platoon movie, but that's where it ends.

1. You ignored a great inconsistency between the real Jim and how he was portrayed. Patricia Kennealy has sworn up and down in her book "Strange Days" and in the DVD features that Jim NEVER needed any kind of assistance from substances to "rise to the occasion". 2. The "Soul Kitchen" in the song did not refer to a place in Venice, but Sylvia's, a famous soul food spot in Harlem, NYC.

Oliver Stone’s memoir/biopic will probably be titled, *Creative Liberties*, because that’s the only way the guy operates. No clue how *Midnight Express* got him an Oscar win. From demonizing the Turks to having the Turkish characters speak Maltese instead of the actual language, the list is endless. On that note, could you please consider doing a *One Fv€k!n Hour* on Midnight Express?

I don't think the term existed at the time but when I saw this when it came out I recognized it as a "fan service" movie. The movie the ride-or-die fans of The Doors deserved. I felt much the same way when 'I'm Not There' came out. Haynes is ten times the filmmaker Stone is but they both disappeared down the biopic myth rabbithole in their respective ways.

I saw this movie when it came out and my GF at the time was the only reason I did not walk out. Oliver Stone is an idiot. This is the guy who made a fictional movie about JFK and Vietnam so it was to be expected. Stone served in Vietnam is the scary part. I guess he saw guys taking dozens of rounds into their back that kept running and with a shattered spin, damaged spinal cord, bullets through their hearts and lungs who could stand up and raise their arms like something out of a 1950s biblical resurrection move of a risen Christ. Stone if you are reading this. Jim Morrison was a guy who spent most of his time reading books. Sure he was a rock star, young guy who liked to party and had a lot of women. So like most guys his age in the same position. Another spoiler for you. Oswald acted alone and every Vet I ever talked about that war with laughed at how stupid Platoon is.

This one has soured on me as I have gotten older. I do like some of their music, but my god, the acting in this film is terrible. Did Meg Ryan seriously NOT win a Razzie award for giving one of the worst performances I have ever seen? Val was okay; but he clearly has better work in his film catalog. It is well shot, but well shot garbage is still well shot garbage. Is it bad if I say this film is "better" than Bohemian Rhapsody? This film is weak, but BR was SUPER FUCKING WEAK! I like Queen a lot more than The Doors and yet that film was so awful to Freddie's legacy and so full of lies and nonsense that I can't watch it again. This film sucks.........but it is far more fun than Bohemian Rhapsody.
