You may disagree with Oliver Stone's political views, however, in Born On The 4th Of July, he elicited a career best performance from Tom Cruise, and he dramatized the horror of war and the degrading and demoralizing treatment of Vetrans like Kovic, who believed in serving their Country, came home maimed or paralyzed, and were marginalized or treated poorly at hospitals during the Vietnam era. He richly deserved this Oscar.

For those disagreeing with Oliver Stone’s political views, they are factually wrong and on the wrong side of history. Stone’s criticisms of the illegal Vietnam war crimes are legitimate.

This was entirely a well deserved win here! "Born on the Fourth of July" is one of Oliver Stone's greatest cinematic achievements that realistically and sensitively depicted the excruciatingly painful biopic of Vietnam War veteran, Ron Kovic, played to pure perfection by Tom Cruise. It was a truly powerful and deeply resonating film on the ramifications war can have on one's psyche and physical health that still haunts me to this very day.

Joel Coen, Kenneth Lonergan, Vince Gilligan, Sean Baker, Martin Brest, Jim Jarmusch, Todd Phillips, M. Night Shyamalan, John Waters, and Todd Solondz studied at that school. I don't begrudge the four directors who've beat him over the years: Sydney Pollack, Oliver Stone, Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson. All right, maybe Jackson, since I hate the fact Master and Commander had to come out the year the Academy realized it better honor Lord of the Rings already. But, seriously, fine filmmakers all. But I do hope Peter Weir, my personal favorite director, wins an Oscar in the near future.

Barry Levinson won the year before, but was unavailable. Bernardo Bertolucci was the year before that, and he was in Italy and declined to present. Oliver himself won the year before that, so of course he couldn't present. They chose Scorsese because he was Oliver's teacher at NYU Film School, and they expected Oliver to win. Like when they expected Scorsese to win years later, they chose his old pals, Spielberg, Lucas, and Coppola to present.
