The waiting game is same for internships - I think it’s so bad. I had times where I did several interview rounds and then didn’t even get a courtesy ‘no’ email. For the sake of a two or three line email, would be so nice if that was the norm

It seems pretty standard for any job you apply for unfortunately. When I left uni I applied for so many jobs that I never heard anything back from

Oh yeah! Last year I got a ‚no‘ letter for a one week internship in a hospital I applied to seven years ago. I‘m now almost finished with med school, but I won‘t ever apply there again 😂

It’s the same in any job. When I recently was job hunting I interviewed For about 12 jobs before getting a yes. Out of those 12, only like 3 or 4 contacted me to say no. It’s not hard to send a generic ‘you have not been successful’ email. At least then you know and can move on

It reminds me so much of the process of getting a teaching job. You spend hours on the application and sometimes they never tell you if you didn't get an interview. If you do get an interview it's usually in 2-3 days and you've got to plan a lesson, print resources etc. and prep for the interview. Then you could get to the interview and find out that the job is already someone else's (i.e. they were temporary in that school and this interview is to make them permanent). You then spend the whole day with your competition and then someone walks in the room and announces who got the job (sometimes they do send you home and call but it depends) so you have to deal with disappointment and congratulate them.

As someone who is a teacher and is pursuing a career in musical theatre, they are so similar in the audition/interview process. It's so odd and just a bit weird how much you have to prepare for both

I definitely agree about over loading actors with so many scenes for an audition. I have so many times where I’ve worked myself up so much and then I’ve ended up not giving my best self anyway because I’m too stressed about remembering material rather than focusing on the character! Sometimes it can feel like it’s a memory test more than anything 😭😅 But it shouldn’t be like that! Xx

I remember auditioning for a local amateur group about 10 years ago to be in the ensemble for their next show. When the cast list was released me and one other guy were the only two people at the audition who didn't get in. A couple of weeks later they put out a social media announcement saying 'do you know anyone who would want to be in a show? We have two spaces available in our male ensemble'.

Actors basically go through job interviews constantly throughout their career, but instead of a bit of research in to the company and thinking about your strengths and weaknesses, you get pages of dialogue to learn and interpret and songs you have to remember every lyric too! I couldn't do it. I hate job interviews and plan to stay at my job forever so I never have to do another one!

when i was a uni student i was studying film production. Whenever I was the casting director or producer for a film I always made sure that I emailed everyone who auditioned, regardless of if they got the role or not. A lot of actors were often surprised but happy that I emailed them saying they didn't get the role, just so that they knew! Also sometimes when people walked in you could instantly tell if they weren't right for the role, our auditions were never very long. It doesn't take long to know if someone isnt good for the role. I also made a musical film and even those auditions were only like 15 mins but even in that time we knew if the person wasn't right for the role.

In my experience working for a casting director and being on the other side of the table, you know the second the person starts wether or not they’re right for the job. So I think it makes a lot of sense to cut down on material that is sent out.(edit: this was in NYC so obviously there are some differences)

I directed a TV show for university set in three different time periods, but with the same actors playing the roles in those eras. Therefore, they had to audition for the three different roles. However in the audition process I was happy for them to have the script, and if they were off script for the some of the scene it was just an added bonus

Ollie you are exactly correct about how the US does the audition process. They tell you to prepare one song, one or two contrasting scenes and maybe a basic step, then as you move along it gets more complex. I agree that handing you a packet and three days is way too much and doesnt accurately reflect a performers abilities

I literally left the industry because of not getting audition feedback - I would get down to the finals for everything and never know why I wasn't getting work - and i've been out of it 15 years and I really regret that now and would really like to get back in! Just have to make sure I have a better agent this time who fights harder for feedback - they were good at getting me through the door but not great at helping me find out why I wasn't getting work! lol

Relate!! I'm Dyslexic and auditions like that terrify me! I had an audition where we were to learn 3 songs from a list and I had been working FOH In Edinburgh for 2 double show days in a row so no time at home to learn. Of course I chose the songs from the list that I vaguely knew and then in the audition the panel were kicking off because too many people chose the same songs... The list had about 20 songs most of which were quite obscure and was sent out 2 days before the audition!

Could you maybe explain what a Swing actually does? I am not very familiar with the industry and from what you're saying, it sounds like you're someone who has to know the whole show and step into roles of people missing on a particular night? But how can you possibly know the whole show my heart? Lots of love!
@abbey23764 жыл бұрын
Dominique Zeier you don’t have to know the whole show, but you do have multiple specific parts to learn, usually in the chorus/ensemble to cover for understudies when they go on as the lead role!

It’s interesting that you mention that many people in the industry can’t play piano or sight read. I have only been in one audition for a school production about 10 years ago (I was only in grade 7) where I had to prepare a song from the musical I was auditioning for. This was before you could find music on the internet and I didn’t know how to learn the melody. I could read notes from playing the clarinet and I had a cheap, old plastic piano for children so I learned the song with this piano. The only problem was that the pino was completely out of tune (almost an entire note), so I sounded completely awful on my audition with the teacher on a real piano 😅

Why doesn't the acting union or agents demand that actors are given an answer... the actor could register their text message or e mail and even if it is a copy and paste answer in the early rounds at least you will know, it is also better for both sides as if they want actor and don't let them know for a long time they could take another job so it works both ways x

Overloading actors with audition material is also pretty messed up considering it is unpaid labor. Obviously auditions are necessary, but I take big issue with it for a lot of reasons, that one being the biggest. I had to quit acting before I even really began because I simply couldn't afford to be taking time off my day job to sit at an audition for a job I most likely wouldn't even be getting.

It is the same for all job, most jobs never tell you if it is a no for a job you've applied for. It is only if you get to the last few people for interview that you will be told no. And that still isn't always the case. It is not just theatre!

You should try interviewing for a teaching position! We have to spend hours upon hours researching the school, prepping the lesson, prepping your folio if art and then spend a whole day “auditioning” for the position. All this is usually a fix because the person has already been selected but they officially have to do open interviews! Often our contracts are only a year long too. So yes, I completely understand the stress of the process.
