My family printing business had 12 Heidelberg machines over years. Notice most machines are cutting and creasing only.

There is a grooved wheel behind the flywhell with a white wheel dropping in it, this is the binding device that prevents the press from going backwards, lift the white wheel with a screwdriver then you can turn it backwards by hand.........if a person gets caught up in this press you are in big trouble if you do not know how to reverse it.

Shop I worked at didn't have the Heidelberg plate attached, just the plain bar. Gripper smacked my forhead and flipped my glasses across the floor. As I recall there is a release down inside the flywheel to turn it backwards but you risk breaking the gripper bars.

I run a 1950 Heidelberg Die Cutter, on it you can manually spin the Flywheel/Brake backwards if needed. I bet that one has a way too, I would find out just in case....

That's what i was going to say. I ran Heidelberg Windmills for years. You can definitely make the machine go backwards by turning the flywheel by hand. Also, to the maker of this video: IMO, you are right to bring up the danger of running a letterpress, especially one that is more open like the Windmill. However, there is nothing going on that is unexpected or hidden. So there is nothing to fear, as long as you give yourself some personal rules about what to do or not do. Such as always respect the position that the flip up guard is in, for instance. Never reach around it when it is down. Just make it a part of your habit to flip it up or down appropriately. Just the same level of respect you would have for any machine really. Good video. I'm glad that you really showed it working and didn't try and make the video artsy like some others I've seen.

This machine for me always brought to mind operating a Tardis. In watching this video it brought back those old feelings. This woman is operating the machine like someone who is putting out a quality job in a timely fashion not some pretentious wannabe who thinks his over bumped printing is a quality job.

There is also a shear collar with several bolt around it that could be loosened to back the press off but this could screw up the timing of the machine. If someone is trapped this wouldnt matter. Otherwise its arm cutting off time or cutting machine apart!

me..a snotnosed 40 year old offf-set printer.. got in my company "my" Speedmaster 74-5 2/3 sold.. bummer.. now keeping my printerjob as being versatile in the company and doing off-set and letterpress.. I find the Windmill harder to operate then the Ciliner, the Cilinderpress was using many things GTO and MO had..

There is a way to reverse the windmill without breaking it. Few know how to do this anymore.

Turn off the motor, disengage the red handle and manually push the flywheel backward right? I remember there was a ring in the back that was a type of shear pin. One of our operators over torqued the platten and it wouldn't give a good impression. The boss told me if I could fix it I could run it...best job I ever had...

There should be three feet at least of space around that machine,maybe that's why one of the bros got his nose broke.The good thing about those machines is they don't run very fast so when I got a long run say 10,000 sheets of A4 letter head you made large cause of overtime and in the place I worked,we all liked overtime.Everybody wanted big runs cause you could fill up the duct with ink then read the newspaper but if the foreman caught you we would all get pulled into the office and get written warnings.

It is wrong to suggest the press has no reverse, it does - with the motor off and the clutch engaged you can turn the flywheel backwards reversing the press. You do not have to break the press. If very large objects get caught in the press it has shear bolts that break avoiding severe damage to the press and when the press locks up the belt will slip. The most usual injury is peering into the running machine and getting a smack on the temple. If you choose to not use the ink duct for short runs do not be tempted to use an ink knife to put ink on the rider rollers from behind the press with the machine running - the rollers can grab the ink knife and project it at high speed forward. I have seen an ink knife fly twenty feet and stick in a wall in this way.

Interesting as many women seem to be drawn to letter press printing. Too bad everything is going digital these days. Even screen printing will only hold out for textiles. Come get some Catspit~! ☠

What kind of motor starter is on this press? When we refurbish these we always put an electric-actuated motor starter (as opposed to a manual-actuated one). If power fails during operation and the operator does not disengage the clutch or turn off the manual-actuated starter, when power is re-applied the press will start up again. Big hazard.

Yes, I know that. But: The machine's docs say that you should NOT turn the machine backwards even when you unlock it this way. They say that you should only turn backwards for millimeters and that the gripper mechanics will suffer from damage if the machine is turned too far (i.e. opened backwards). Do you have any experience turning the machine backwards without damage?

Dear boardies, as I`ve been working more than 40 years on the windmills, I`m quite sure it`s not a thing of lubrication (`cause that sounds really awfull) but the fan?belt should be changed urgently. This is the sound of an old belt! My boss wanted to save the money. He only believed, that I was right, when the belt was torn. (After 20 years). Hans from Vienna

PLEASE oil that poor machine!!!! Machines like the Heidelberg Windmill will last forever if taken care of. Your ink cylinder is woefully out of lubrication and is crying for oil!!! It pains me to hear that sound as I have seen the damage! Take care of this old soldier, please!

Papier Meister : this is how it sounds when the ink rollers are not in use and the letter rollers taken out. Perfectly normal.

Why is the top half of the flywheel guard removed - this is very dangerous? I think the press sounds bad because of the microphone being positioned very close to the machine.

We had a chase fall out once and jammed up the press. Luckily it only damaged one gripper bar and bent the chase.

I know that sound. But not that strong... It doesn't look like that's there a lack of oil. It's just the gear that's worn out. I have no idea how to get the machine quiet again. Probably with some grease. But the machine docs say: Oil, only oil and everywhere oil, no grease except for the roller bearings...

Also rather worrying and potentially dangerous is the bodged up emergency stop secured with what looks like electrical tape. I realise the rivets crack the chromium guard after many years of use but that is not an adequate repair. I also do not approve of keeping metal objects on the side table as they can easily get knocked into the press. I personally would not work that press with a stack of paper on a pallet directly behind me.

That Heidelberg does sound rough - and there is no way in the world you should EVER lean into a 10x15 like she has done to make adjustments like that, NEVER. The motor should have been turned off before leaning in to make such adjustments.

Been using Heidelberg platens for over 40 years and there is nothing wrong with leaning in with the motor on as long as the dead stop is lifted - which the lady had lifted in the video.

Heidelberg Letterpress RUBBISH! All this work was probably printed on the offset Heidelberg GTO in the background. The platen was just cutting and creasing. Did the woman do any makeready or did she just bash it through? She didn't appear to inspect a sheet.
