Best movie I've seen in years! As a student of 18th Century history, it was so refreshing the extent to which Lanthimos went to capture the period, with its mix of extravagance and squalor which is so alien to us, while also giving us such relatable characters. He didn't shy away from any of history's grim realities, and gave it a non-hetero, non-male perspective. Loved every moment, right down to the fucked up ending!
@imenbassalah42685 жыл бұрын
Well as a historiography student, I just feel stunned at the genius with which the script writer made use of history from below to depict sexuality of the day! Paradoxically, it can also be classified as a romance as Abigail fell madly in love with Sarah hearing her defending the cause of war so brilliantly! The moment she started to look at her as an idol and rival at once! Brilliant

Olivia's performance in this film was amazing in every single way. Her acting was so intense that I had to cry whenever she cried. You know what they say, a good character makes you become the character. She has the ability to make her emotions break through the screen. And for that ability, she deserved her Oscar very much. Knowing her since Hot Fuzz, I saw her a couple of times in other productions, such as Skins (episode 'Naomi') and Doctor Who (episode 'The Eleventh Hour'). I missed out The Night Manager, but I watched Broadchurch and Tyrannosaur, where she was astonishing. Also, she has been awarded the CBE recently, which means that she's one step away of being knighted. To me, she's already Dame Olivia Colman.

You know something is deeply wrong with "the academy" (yeah, intentionally no capitals in there) when Bohemian Rhapsody got 4 Oscars and The Favourite just one. What a jewel this film is.
@katewilliams40134 жыл бұрын
Are you implying the Academy is to be seen as utterly infallible and 100% perfect (with a heavy bias towards your own subjective taste) and that if they do something "wrong" everything else can be completely tossed out? Let me ask you one thing: Are you aware of the *fallacy of false dichotomy* ? This basically means polarized thinking (usually found among kids, idiots and fanatics) where everything can be viewed from polarized extremes. Btw, are you entirely certain you understand what Oscars Boheminan Rhapsody won for and are you also entirely certain you didn't just compare the number of apples with the number of oranges? I really like this film. Unlike you however I'm not remotely offended by the academy of not showering it with Oscars. In fact I'm more offended by it not being more commercially popular. You see I'm more aghast by the lack of taste and ignorance of the average movie going audience. So with that in mind I'm not entirely certain if your disappointment, as pettyminded and myopic as it is, is directed towards the real culprit.

Minor Spoiler-filled analysis: I was thinking about Abigail's character arc. Whilst I normally don't like it when films try and show women that go through abuse as liars or manipulators, with Abigail that was actually earned and invoked. She's an example of a person who has been treated so horribly by people that she becomes just as bad as them. The moment where she hits herself with a book is something that people/abusers will claim of their victim/anyone who claims to be a victim to smear them. But here we see a victim do just that to gain sympathy from Queen Anne. It's a great portrayal of a character who starts out as a genuine victim and then becomes a manipulative abuser/schemer.
@Xenite6 жыл бұрын
Yes! It's like she started out as this probably more on the innocent side person, and she slowly sinks. Anne and Sarah are not really bad people, but stuck in a bad position, and honestly, I think that they truly loved each other. By the end, I was sad that their relationship had to end.

Saw this a few days ago. Terrific movie, so gracefully executed and both funny and harrowing in its impact. All three leads were excellent, but Colman's performance was stunning, a marvel to behold. So much of what gets lauded as good acting these days is just alternating between steely blankness and tears. Colman conveyed an incredible range of emotions and physical states in a superbly natural way that never felt affected or contrived. Or even that familiar - it was a refreshingly singular performance. Best Actress-award level of quality, at the least, but really one of the best performances I've seen in ages.

I love this movie. The best thing about it, is that when you watch it its really surreal and weird, at the end you are left feeling a mix of "oh ok" and ewww. But the more you reflect on the characters and story afterwards the more the story gels and the dots connect. It rewards reflection and discussion. It helps that much of the imagery stays with you forever.

Terrific! I'm very surprised the movie didn't get the Oscar for Best Film this year???

I would have been happy if Rachel Weisz had won. To me she was the leading actress. Olivia's character was funny but Rachel's character had more lines. I loved them both.
