There's no such thing as "more conservative" period, morals simply shift from one place to the other: whenever a society opens up on a certain topic it always does so by automatically repressing another aspect. Look at the ancient Greeks, in many ways they were more open about sexuality than modern Western civilization, yet they'd cringe if they could see what we have become now in the same way we cringe at them.

‘Very kind’ - that’s so twee. Love it!! And one of the funniest bits is when Helena Bonham Carter creases up at her saying "We went to the Louvre or something.... I was frightfully bored by that." Only the aristocracy can be so unashamedly philistine as that. Brilliant.

She embellishes the story a bit. Just read that it was common for the upper classes to take their virgin wives to brothels to watch others have sex, so they knew what to do on their wedding night. There was no porn back then and ladies did not ask mummy or nanny what sex was like. I bet a lot of ladies were expected not to know about sex so I guess a lot of them pretended as to not bruise the fragile male ego. It was basically the porno version of 'mansplaining'. Look dear; The man pinches the ladies nipple and- "Really? Oh how fascinating! Shall we commence with the shagging?"

I love the rather deadpan, matter of fact way Lady Glenconner tells the story…makes it all the more funny.
