I am a classic movie buff. I have about 20 of her movies on dvd. I corresponded with her for about 15 years when I was in the Navy. I have kept every letter that I received from her. I have 2 autographed pictures of her. One of them I sent to her and she sent it back personally autographed. She is the epitome of the word "actress" and "STAR". No actress today comes even close to her stature. What a wonderful lady and very gracious.

I remember writing her a letter back in 1983 when she lived in Paris, France...I'm not sure she is still living there but she was so very gracious and kind enough to send me a beautiful note and autographed photo. I will forever treasure. Thank you for the interview upload.

Quite sad she and Joan never reconciled. I have to say I think Olivia was the better actress - more range, depth and talent, and as for looks, there's no contest. Joan was certainly attractive, quite pretty, but Olivia was simply stunning - those brown eyes were pure magic. She was (and presumably still is, at 99) - as evidenced here - wonderfully witty and intelligent. One of the Golden Age's greatest actresses and a true lady all the way. God bless her!
@debra138 жыл бұрын
+James Vaughan I can't say agree about looks. Talent-yes, Joan was quite a natural actress who did not have the driving ambition Olivia had and Olivia was better-but had Joan continued with the same verve they may have become equal. But I think Joan was far more lovely than Olivia so it is a matter of perception.
@RaisingHellAgain8 жыл бұрын
+James Vaughan You nailed it! Joan also didn't have the class nor speak like a proper lady as Olivia did. She was the better actress and OMG what a Beauty. And look which one got a part in Gone With The Wind! Oh she was so amazing in her role
@danielstanwyck28128 жыл бұрын
+swampmammytheone Olivia was indeed very good; only thing is, she got more and more mannered in carriage and inflection, more proper whereas Fontaine was earthier, on the level.
@JamesVaughan8 жыл бұрын
daniel stanwyck Funny, but for me it's precisely the other way around! I think Olivia was more "down to earth" (and intelligent) in her interviews, and Joan was increasingly affected in hers (sounding so teddibly upper-class British despite her American upbringing). I also think unquestionably Olivia had the better (and more varied) roles. Well, as auntdj111 said, it's a matter of perception.

The Heiress is one of my all time favorite films. Authentic sets, music, costumes, dances, horses & carriages and a perfect cast make for a fascinating story that I never tire of watching, and I've seen it many times. It makes one feel you are actually living in 1850s New York City. I can't praise it enough, and Olivia de Havilland's performance is superb. Her character changing from mild and meek to bitter and determined is breathtaking. My favorite line: "I can be very cruel. I've been taught by masters." Wow! Looking forward to reading about her upcoming 100th birthday on July 1, 2016, and the many tributes she deservedly will receive. I wish some people would stop with the bitchy sibling rivalry remarks. That has become very boring. Most families experience a bit of that. So what? I love Olivia de Havilland and thank her for all the pleasure I've derived from her many great performances. She's irreplaceable!

Wow! I did not know that even though Olivia won her court case against Warner Bros that it had an adverse effect for those returning from war that they were able to renegotiate new contracts & weren't forced by an the old law that required an actor/writer/producer/director ect to give more time than their contracts allowed simply by saying that they were on suspension (Not getting paid) and therefore owed the studios as they were unable to fulfil their original contracts at their original salary. Their salary/worth was worth a lot at the time say 5yrs earlier & now the studio could get out of having to pay more by forcing them to work for them longer.

Unbelieveable that the studios thought they could get away with ripping actors off. They were such hypocrites back then, (putting actors who left to fight in the war on suspension and then holding them to contracts they signed before they left). ALL the studios during that time made war movies supposely in support of the war effort, and then turn around and "suspend" those under contract who left the studio to fight in it, CRAZY. ALL the actors should have gone to the press about what they were doing to them. With her De Havilland Decision she helped thousands in the film industry get fair contracts. A "working-man/womans hero" she was and perhaps Olivia's greatest "role" of all
