Recorded sometime mid-1970's. Olivia Newton-John singing the classic Carpenters track - 'Yesterday, Once More'. Poorish sound quality, so have adapted the video to suit the mood....

Its unfair to compare the 2 singers...I love Karen's deep full voice...I love ONJ's soft melodious voice....since this was onj's cover respect it don't demean her by comparing she's under par with Karen...they were both at par with each other's talent...equally talented and charming...its just sad that they never did a duet, Imagine a duet album with 2 great voices that would have been heaven to the ears them doing the harmonies together

'Yesterday Once More' is the signature tune of Karen Carpenter, the moment I hear the iconic intro at the start of the song , Karen's face light up in my mind as for ONJ, nobody could touched her nor replaced her in 'I honestly love you' both songs belong to two different great singers and are unique :)

Darren mason.....thank you..I thought I was the only obsessed fan on Miss Olivia.....since 1975.....when my parents brought home 2 of her 1st US albums for my bday.....I was in 3rd grade.....fell madly in love with her and still am at 52 years old....she is a goddess....

ONJ and Karen Carpenter are two great luminaries that have brought lots of joy to many, Both are women of substance, despite having fame , they, not unlike most of us felt the pain of loneliness although Karen is not with us anymore Still their music and their lives continues to bring comfort and joy to us to this day and that is simply amazing :)

her voice today is not as full of energy as it was once was as in her heyday ,it has gotten older, raspier,different,and nuch more hoarse.the quality today has changed so much today and thats becuase she strains her voice so much in so many concerts all over the world.i would do what Streistand does once in a blue moon come out and shwo the world how great i am rather straining the poor voice so much but still we love her and god bless her forever

I think her voice has actually improved recently since doing more live concert work. There was a period in the mid 90s where a lack of live performing seemed to have a detrimental effect.

It wasn’t a lack of performing - it was a side effect of the chemotherapy. In her book, she even states that she developed a lump in her throat as a result of the cancer.

This does indeed sound like a tribute to KC from ONJ. It's quite lovely. BTW: Karen did NOT want to sing like Olivia; why would she? She knew how great and unique she was. No evidence exists which backs up this story. Karen always changed her voice to adapt to the songs she was singing.

@infinera06 I am a big Karen Carpenter fan and I think she does edge it out over ONJ, but it's not her ruining the song, it's the music. It's overpowering her voice, out of key, and has that horn sound every few seconds coming in way too loud. Not to mention this song was written specifically for Karen's voice. We didn't get to hear how Karen sounded singing "physical", "magic", etc. Few people give Richard the credit he deserves, he really brought out the best of Karen, so keep that in mind.

Fair comment. But please remember, this was a copy of a copy of a copy, so the sound quality has deteriorated a little. I have no doubt the original sound would have come across slightly better. Although, as I also admit, this was Karen's song... :o)

Really quite liked the singing..but not the instrumentation...I believe that's the real difference...It's hard to re-interpret a song when you've got all that crap going on behind you. Some arranger thought he was pretty hot, there's just too much going on...hard for any singer to work with I would imagine...

@classy64jas I certainly CAN imagine Karen sing for instance "I honestly love you" better than Olivia. Karen's version would sound much more sincere, whereas Olivia's version sounds fake. Of course too, Karen's voice would be much more soothing to listen to.

The music is overpowering her voice and is off key and what is with that horn sound that is drowning everything else out. It's terrible. Her singing isn't bad, it's the music.
