"The Messy One", as a composer, was such a synthesis of musical vision and spirituality. This is one of several of his pieces I have found to be a worship experience in and of itself. The Dieu Parmi Nous, The Celestial Banquet, this piece. . . all of them move me to tears from the sheer beauty, peace and power brought forth. I feel as if I'm getting a peek at the Kingdom to come. The struggles of this life and world are laid bare as well. Messiaen does that to me, and I thank God for him.

The first time I heard this, I was transported beyond this world and glimpsed the edge of Eternity itself. That was a CD of "Glorious Pipes" played on my Yamaha bookshelf stereo- I can't even imagine what this would sound like on a live organ!

Moving, extraordinary. I will play this during Easter service, for my lutheran community (Turin). Deep gratitude to the Lord of lords and to Olivier Messiaen for this prodigy.

This is certainly the most awe-inspiring organ music I've ever come across. Heard it 'live' only once, in a cathedral in Berlin many years ago. My favourite piece of Messiaen next to Louange à l'Eternité de Jésus from the Quatuor pour la fin du Temps.

@MegaCirse7 жыл бұрын
@xavier6597 жыл бұрын
@MegaCirse5 жыл бұрын

Perfect! This is what I'll play as I sign up for Medicare.
This is played by Dragan on a "virtual" organ. Sound samples are taken from each pipe of the real organ and played through a computer...the system is Hauptwerk and the organ is Notre-Dame de Metz. A very nice performance, like with all of Dragan's videos!

Absolutely incredible... :) I was able to hear Monsieur Michael Matthes play this (along with many other wonderful selections) in Birmingham, Alabama at St. Paul's cathedral. He did an outstanding job and this has been a favorite piece of mine since.

Messian himself performed this with a time of 10:17; most moderns are in such a rush they take this far too quickly, as if in a fast food restaurant with no time for l'Église Éternelle!
@annakimborahpa7 жыл бұрын
Perhaps instead of the "Vision of the Eternal Church" most moderns in a fast food restaurant are savoring a 'vision of the eternal cheeseburger.' And instead of "The Celestial Banquet" might they be partaking of a 'celestial bag lunch' at their workplace?

I agree with you. But I think this end has its "raison d'etre" : Jesus hasn t come back yet so the end of the music is just down to earth and sad. We still have to toil our everyday way until we can see this in real and it will be even more beautiful! Messiaen's last orchestral work is named "lightnings from beyond" and it s exactly what it is (in fact "éclairs sur l au dela" means "flashes of the beyond" but it means nearly the same, doesn t it?). It s very lengthy (11 movements as far I can remember) but it s worth listening. A sort of musical prophecy of what is to be lived beyond!? 😊💕 J. S. Bach is also very good as a Christian musician, and W. A. Mozart too.... Merry Christmas to you!

If I grasp your meaning correctly, holiness or perfect goodness is not easy to encounter, to describe, let alone live with.
@MegaCirse4 жыл бұрын

I'd suggest that "Apparition de l'église éternelle" is better translated "Vision of the Church Eternal" than "Apparition of the Eternal Church" since in English 1. "Apparition" carries a negative, ghastly dimension inappropriate for the Church Eternal, likely not present in Messiaen's meaning and 2. I see in Church Eternal a greater emphasis than in Eternal Church.
