And what does Liszt do? He plays the whole thing, root and branch, violin and piano, nay, more, for he played fuller, more broadly. The violin got its due right in the middle of the piano part. The faster than usual tempo allows one thing: Edvard Grieg could write music in larger forms that would allow his melodies to shine forth like precious gems. The musical structure of the concerto is a marvel of construction (that aspect is seldom mentioned). Even the auspicious piano at opening measures finds itself recurring in the development section. The reason I extol this concerto is because the beauty sounds SPONTANEOUS never contrived.

My dear friend, Aldo Lopez Gavilan will be performing this Grieg Concerto with the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra this month on Saturday, March 29, 2022. Also, please check out the film/doc about him & his violinist brother, Ilmar Gavilan. Both grew up in Havana, Cuba as child prodigies. The film/documentary is entitled, "The Brothers/Los Hermanos". It's brilliant & a dedicated story of their desire to perform together when each was reunited in America!

Who played this? It is taken demonically fast! Great performance, but the tempo was so fast it was hard to appreciate Grieg's masterful chord phrasing and you can't hear some of the arpeggios that are supposed to be deliberately slower to accentuate the pianist.

This is supposed to be one of the easier piano concertos in the rep. I can't see why. Sure looks hard to me. Also, this concerto literally killed someone once: the pianist Simon Barere dropped dead during a performance of this piece in 1951 ("DUM! da-da-DUM! da-da-DUM da-da-DUM da-da-DEAD!"). Betcha Beethoven can't say that about any of his concertos.

What about Haydn's various concertos. I've had a listen to a few of them and they sound not so technically demanding as this one is. There's heavy ornamentation in part of one movement I am thinking of (the third movement from a D major concerto), but that doesn't seem overly virtousic either. Maybe everyone is referring to romantic repertoire? I'm a classical pianist by nature as well (mostly have played romantic works), so I am fairly familiar with how piano technique works.
