Great video. Very helpful. Thanks so much for making this! The little K.O. is mind blowing. Hey man, is that some type of special clamp for POs you got spinning around? Retro Tech History: You know... this method of audio data transfer actually gave me a bit of a chuckle, as it's nearly exactly the same method that was used almost 40 years ago >> to backup and restore programs in early inexpensive personal computers - such as the Commodore VIC-20 (which I actually had). The good olde VIC had a cassette tape drive, and you saved and loaded all your programs and data from it. It was very slow, but it sounds exactly like the data in the K.O. recordings...
@OllieLoops5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. The clamp isn't anything special, just a small clamp. Its on a rotating base. I think there are a few applications where tape drive backups are still in use. It was pretty creative of TE to use it on the KO. Enjoy your KO!

@OllieLoops3 жыл бұрын
Does your laptop have a line input? That’s not very common. Confirm the specs on your computer. If it does, then check the input settings in Audition. It should be set to the line input, not the mic. If your computer doesn’t have a line input, then you need an interface that has one. Hope that helps.

You don’t need any audio interface. Just a just audio recorder will do. But make sure the recorder doesn’t compress the audio in the process. Should be ok if it records WAV or AIFF.

For the line input, yes it should play through the speaker. Unless you are trying to do a data overwrite on your KO, in which case double check your button press sequence to make sure you’re in data mode. If you’re trying to backup your KO, you should be connecting to the audio output. Hope that helped.

I know it’s not a data transfer question but I bought a 1.8” jack to twin 1.4” jacks to connect this to my audio interface and couldn’t figure it out. I also tried a 1.8” jack to twin RCA but also couldn’t get any sound through my monitors. I’m using a Komplete audio 6 interface if you have any help ❤️
@OllieLoops5 жыл бұрын
@James Twigg Hey James, I can try to help. Is the goal to just get audio out of the KO and play over your monitors via the interface? Or are you trying to record a data transfer? I'm guessing you may just want the audio to play over your monitors. There are a few ways to do this. Going from the 1/8" output on the KO, direct to the monitor's inputs is the simplest way to go. You could go into a mixer as well, to adjust the volume levels before the monitors. You could also go into your interface from the KO. I haven't worked with the Komplete interface before, but I would assume its like most interfaces. In this case, you would likely need to open a DAW of some sort and arm the inputs on the interface and turn on monitoring on the inputs as well. This will allow the audio to pass through the audio interface to the outputs. Likely, you will need to have the DAW open and configured this way whenever you want to go from the KO to the interface and out to the monitors. Lastly, this way of connecting the KO introduces several gain stages, so its important to go from the source to the destination, adjusting the volume in that order. Make sure that the audio output level on the KO is set between 12-16 after you connect your 1/8" cable. The KO defaults to a low volume, so you just have to turn it up a bit. Once the KO's volume is set to a good level, slowly turn up the input gain on your interface until its just below peaking/clipping. Then adjust the main volume output to the monitors. I hope that helps!

hi, I'm having lots of trouble getting this to work... i notice you suggest playing the recorded audio BEFORE activating the PO to receive - won't this result in it missing the beginning of the backup? I've tried both ways anyway and still no luck :( I'm recording the data into garage band using an audio interface (UMC22) and an insert cable, playing back with a 1/8" audio cable with 1/4" adapter for the interface's headphone out... any idea what's going wrong???
@OllieLoops4 жыл бұрын
The sequence of recording data in should be, Press Record on the recorder, Start transmission of the KO data backup. Then receiving into the KO, start data receiving on the KO, then press Play on the recorder to play back. Using this method, there should be a moment of silence at the beginning of the recording as a buffer and not missing the beginning of the data transmission. Regarding why it's not working correctly, theres some things to troubleshoot. First, make sure your cable is stereo. It should work via headphone out to the KO, but how did you record in? You would need a 1/8" trs to (2) 1/4" mono cable to go into the inputs of the interface, for example. The signal needs to be stereo. You can also verify the signal is in stereo within Garage band. I hope that helps.

Performing a factory reset should bring back all the factory sounds. Check out the user guide for your particular PO on TE’s website for instructions on performing a factory reset.
@madshannilhedensted24404 жыл бұрын
@@OllieLoops I thought so to, but it resets settings and the patterns, but not the sounds. So you get "original" patterns with you own recorded sounds. 😐 It's the po-137 (speak - Rick and Morty) I have, so I'm hoping that I use my laptop import the original sounds.
@OllieLoops4 жыл бұрын
Mads Hannil Hedensted interesting. The Rick and Morty version has a different set of sounds than the original speak, I recall. Ok, if you do a test, record something into it, and do a factory reset, is the recording still there? If so, there may be something wrong with the device. If the recording is gone, then it’s working as expected. To do a factory reset, hold pattern and write while installing the batteries. Further, the speak has an accompanying VST to load sounds from a computer. You may look into that and see if that gets the sounds back. But you may need to purchase the VST. Lastly, if the recordings remain after you do a factory reset, I would recommend contacting TE support. They should be able to help you further. Good luck! Let use know if you get it resolved. Thanks.

Hi, I've tried several times this with a Edirol recorder (16 bits 44.1Khz) getting unconsistent results. Question: the volume of the PO-33 when recording the backup is important? What's the recommended volume in the recorder? About -6dB? It also looks like when I want to load a backup into the PO-33, if I just made a reset in the unit, it won't load up. But If I don't do it, sometimes it works out fine. Any idea why this erratic behaviour? Thanks!
@OllieLoops5 жыл бұрын
Hey Oriol, thanks for your comment. The backup process can be tricky sometimes. I would say that the volume of both devices is important. In general, you just don't want it to be too loud and clipping or too quite. On the KO, I typically set the output volume to 12. The recorder should be ok at -6db, but you could probably drop it down between -6 and -12 to be safe. You want to make sure its not clipping or distorting during the recording. If your recorder has a level meter, you can verify with that that the signal is at a good level and not too low or too high. The data transfer can take a few minutes, so make sure you stop the recording a few seconds after the KO's screen says "end". Assuming the recording of the data transfer is now fine, next we need to make sure the KO accepts the data transfer from the recorder. First, if your recorder has a line level output, use that to connect directly to the KO's line level input. If the recorder doesn't have a line level output, connect to the headphone out and set the headphone level to about 75% or so. Now start the KO data receive process and then start playback on the recorder. Hopefully it will accept the data transfer. Good luck and let me know how that goes.

Hey, depending on your phone type, you would likely need an audio interface into the phone. I know there are several options for iOS devices such as the iRig products. You should then be able to record into the Voice Memo app, or Garage Band, etc with a stereo 1/8" to 1/8" cable. Then go from the interface or direct off the phone with a 1/8" to 1/8" stereo cable to transmit back into the KO. Hope that helps!

@OllieLoops4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. I’ll try to help. I’m not certain you can record the KO on your Pixel 3 given what you mentioned. But here’s what I would try. Connect the cable from the KO’s headphone output to the jack on the phone. Open the recorder app on the phone. Play some notes on the KO to test the input on the phone. If you get a signal coming into the phone, you should be able to do a data transfer from the KO. You would then follow the instruction in this video to create a data transfer. If you get no signal coming into the phone from the KO, then you will need either a USB interface for your computer or phone to record the KO, or you would need an audio recorder with an input. I hope that helps.

Hey, using a dedicated recorder simplifies the process, but you can use an interface and go into a DAW also. The same principles apply: use a stereo cable, make sure the input is set to line level, adjust gain for good signal strength without clipping. Don’t use any compression, limiters or eq. Record in and play it back exactly as it was recorded. Again with a stereo cable back into the PO. Good luck!

Pan one channel left, pan the other channel right. Adjust the volume on the KO to about 75%. You’ll need to do this each time you power up the KO. Hey, thanks for your comment and question. Using a cable from the KO to an audio recorder or to a computer via an audio interface is the same concept. Using Audacity, or similar audio recording app will work fine, just make sure you are recording in stereo. It is a bit tricky to get right. Check your settings. Check that you have a stereo cable. There can’t be any conversion or compression of the recording. Good luck! Hope that helps.

Hi new subscriber enjoying the channel. im trying to find the data file and not having any luck. Am interested to see how you organised the samples. Just seen your other vid about the ability to transfer drums etc from melodic to drum mode and now trying to figure out the best way to build my kits in regards the limited sample time.

Hey, thanks for your comment. There should be a link in the description to the file, did it not work?
@CoinOpMilitia4 жыл бұрын
Tried the link but it wasn’t working for me.

@@CoinOpMilitia thats odd. It worked just fine for me right now. What browser are you using?

Strange. I’m on chrome, will try it again later then. Cheers

Hey man love your vids, i want to export to my iPhone do i need a special app to recieve iT ?
@OllieLoops5 жыл бұрын
rick Pathuis thanks! With the iPhone, you need some sort of interface to accept a line level input into the phone. I don’t know of a cheap one. You may try an audio recorder with a line level input instead.

Hey Ollie, My first PO is on its way to me so I'm a complete newbie. That being said can you recommend a cheap audio recorder that will work for this job (data transfer)?
@OllieLoops2 жыл бұрын
You could get a zoom h1n. But assuming you have a computer, you could get an audio interface like the Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 and use software like Audacity to record.

Seems like a lot of ppl are struggling with this backup thing. :-/ Anyone found an affordable field recorder that'll handle this?
@OllieLoops5 жыл бұрын
Any recorder with a line level input will work. I've seen these start around $100. The Tascam DR-05x will work. The Zoom H1n will work. I hope that helps!

Thanks. I'll give one a try.

$32 Solution: I grabbed a cheap voice recorder w/line-in. The famous Toobom R39 that all the kids are raving about /s. Using the line-in with wav, max bitrate, no compression, etc it works fine. It's pretty tiny too, like a large lighter. Maybe someone can find one even cheaper, but I thought I'd share that it worked. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G718KXC/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Maybe I should've sprung for the $50 sony but this works.

@@davidmcinnis9938Hey, thanks for sharing that info. I'm glad it worked for you. And that's a relatively cheap solution. Nice!

-"you'll want to start the playback first, then start the recording on your KO" Literally does the opposite on the video 🤣
@OllieLoops Жыл бұрын
That happens sometimes. In this case, you can record first then play the KO.
