OK Finally! I have installed the latest OP-Z software and I must say, that I am giddy over the sampling capabilities, so much fun. It's very simple and it really allows you to personalize your sounds. I fell that it loosens up what might be construed as a kind of rigid sampler and turns everything on it's head. Kudos to TE, this is a game changer. I'm looking forward to more modules and software upgrades.

And I really think that if you make a part about the synth, you should have done a part about the drum machine tracks and sounds of it cause it's a great aspect of the machine.

Lots of useful, basic comparison info, but point tally may be somewhat misleading as all the categories certainly dont have the same importance. For example, sequencer and sound quality are two factors that are surely more important than screen vs iPhone? I wanted an OP-1 for ages and am now kicking myself I didnt get one before they went out of production and shot up in price. However, based purely on the sequencing capabilities, I am now thinking the OP-Z may be the better device for me. Actually, the comparison video that would be most useful (for me) would be just looking at the sequencing and workflow on both. I would be very interested to see your take on that.
@OllieLoops5 жыл бұрын
Hey Jim, Thanks for your insightful comment. My take on the point value of the features is that they are subjective to each user. Some people don't care about size, weight and portablity while others care a lot about those details. Keeping it general was the goal. Otherwise I would be tailoring videos to specific users. Your suggestion for a workflow comparison was received. It's a great idea and I'll see what we can do. Regarding your decision, what's the primary goal for the workflow? What features other than workflow are important to you? There are pros and cons to each device. Additionally, there are other devices out there that are also worth considering. I hope that helps!

@OllieLoops3 жыл бұрын
Hey, sorry for the delayed response. You should be able to connect them via midi. I believe the Novation may require an adaptor for the midi output to a standard 5 pin din. Once you have that connected, you will need to adjust the keyboard range(octave) on the keyboard until the keys correspond with the SP. the SP has a specific range of notes for its pads, check out the manual for more info. If I remember correctly, you may also need to enable midi on the SP. Again, check out the SP manual. But it should be pretty easy. I hope that helps.

the keys on the 1 seem so much easier than the Z. do you find yourself messing up due to the button aspect rather than keyboard? i have the 1, thinking i may get both - route 1 output to the Z and do sequencing in there...
@OllieLoops5 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for your comment. Yes, the keys on the OP1 are easier to play. And the OPZ keys quite small. But using an external midi keyboard is a decent solution on both devices. In terms of routing audio, I haven't found a convenient way to do this yet. They are better integrated in terms of midi, but not audio. I hope that helps.

Hayden Redmond hey, thanks for your comment. The OP1’s sequencers are elementary compared to the OPZ. Although the OP1 has some sequencers built in, they are either difficult to use or they are highly limited. I had the OP-1 and recently bought the OP-Z and I like the OP-Z a lot more. The 4 track tape mechanism from the OP-1 really ruined the user experience for me. While the OP-1 has a built in screen, it really does not show that much of information. The OP-1 has a few more synth parameters to change which gives more freedom in sculpting sounds, but on the other hand the OP-Z always gives you usable sounds when tinkering with the limited sound engines/parameters. If only TE could have made the OP-Z more durable... Things like bent cases and double triggers are things that scare people from buying these at the high price.

The OP-1 was in production for something like 7 years, and is still commanding high 1K+ prices on the used market. The OP-Z seems to already be out of production which probably means it never caught on like the OP-1. This alone should tell us which unit the majority of users preferred.
@OllieLoops5 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for your comment. Good insights. Check out of Beat Fighter 2 video, we talk a bit about retained and resell value of both units. Also, both units go in and out of availability on TE's site, which is common. The OP-Z isn't discontinued, its just out of stock. The OP-1 has frequently been out of stock. I think this is a strategy for TE to keep demand high without overproducing and overstocking the units.

Good video, man. Currently i want to sell my OP-1 and to give a try to OP-Z. For me, four tracks are not enough. The sequencer capabilities on OP-Z are the next plus for me over OP-1. Also the mixer has more channels, so you can mix without overdubbing which for me is hard. I just can't imagine how with 4 tracks you can be all the time precise with filtering, volume level for each sounds and so on.. Overdubbing is not just for me. When i finish some i want to have the possibility to export/record each sound separately for mixing, but i don't see good workflow for that with OP-1 when I'm using it as standalone machine. I want just to play some of my ideas as fast as i can without thinking all of the stuff mentioned in my last two sentences, because ideas come and go.. But maybe i will regret for the synthesis differences between both of them. That's why I'm still thinking if it's good idea.
@OllieLoops5 жыл бұрын
@KingOfTheFlowers Hey, thanks for your comment! I understand where you're coming from. I too find the workflow on the OP1 a bit challenging. I usually have to re-record parts several times on the OP1 because of bad timing or something. I think this caps my creativity to some extent. And these obstacles interfere with my train of thought and workflow. So I avoid using the OP1 as a standalone workstation because it doesn't work well for me. With that said, the workflow on the OPZ is much more suited to my style of working. By comparison to the OP1, the OPZ is much easier and quicker to use. I much prefer the sequencer on the OPZ. Now, in terms of synthesis, the OPZ is plenty powerful for most people. Its still good for sound design, its just not as flexible as the OP1. If your style of work and music is not heavily dependent on synths, the OPZ may be a viable option for you. Also, the world of portable workstations is not limited to these too units, you may want to look at the Synthstrom Deluge as well. I hope that helps! Let me know what you decide. As an aside, I know you can pull the individual 4 track wavs off the OP1 and drop that into a DAW to help separate the tracks for mixing. Some people like doing this, and doing the final mixing and mastering in a DAW for greater control. Just a thought, if you have a DAW, you can try this workflow, it could help give you more control of your sound.

Nice video! although i do disagree with the outcome of one of the rounds: Screen. you might think op1 should be the obvious winner because it has a screen, i would argue that the opz wins the point because you can still use it without one! let me see someone do that with an op-1. And also of you Do choose to use your ios screen with the op-z, it gives you much more visual feedback at a glance than the op1, basically all of the track number menus you have to shift through on the op-1 is presented in a nice neat package on one screen in the app. bonus point: no screen = one less thing to break and have to potentially replace
@OllieLoops5 жыл бұрын
Hey Josh. Thanks for your comment. First, I can appreciate where you're coming from. Regarding the screen, I will give you my perspective, in addition to what was said in the video. Features like a screen can differentiate devices from being ordinary to being exceptional. If you're familiar with the Ableton Push 1 and Push 2, the screen improvement on the 2 was such a huge upgrade that it is worth upgrading just for the improved screen. Screens are part of the feature set that many consumers consider. And seeing the graphics and interface in combination with the quality of the screen were some of the features that sold me on the OP1. From a graphic design and UI perspective, the OP1 deserves the awards it received over the years. And I bought into that because of my design and UI background. And thus, it gets my point for being innovative and inspiring to work with. Regarding the comparison of the two screens, I think people are getting caught up in workflow in relation to the screen / no screen argument. I think this is a separate topic. And the OPZ would win in terms of workflow. Lastly, and hopefully I'm not being too argumentative, I don't think it would be fair to give a point or bonus point to the OPZ for a lack of screen. I think that's like saying, "well, its a bonus that my car only has three wheels instead of four because that's one less tire to get a flat." Maybe, but you sacrifice the drivability of the car for such a minimal gain. Ok, Thanks again for your comment. And I appreciate you sharing your perspective.

Different while still complimentary. OP-Z really owns the tricky timing variations that keep things interesting and catchy. Random and fx modulation are its strengths. OP1 is the better synth and more portastudio end to end functional - zero to playing mixdown in car. Z is faster but limited on keys, eq, fx, and lack of full track mixdowns.
